This suggests to me that you have some machines addressing netgroup and

The WORKGROUP is netgroup. I was referring to it generically.

[newbie] Twin head--but not

When I install Mandrake (any release) I choose the video card it selects (SiS 5597)
and then I get a message that says, Your system supports multiple head configuration.
What do you want to do? And it gives me the following choices:

Configure only card Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]|5597 [SiS5582] (PCI:0:0:0)
Configure only card Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]|5597/5598 VGA (PCI:0:20:0)

There's only one card in there, and there's only one VGA port on the card, but
either choice works.

This isn't a problem, but I'm curious as to what's going on.

I've also created a blank file called aquota.user in /home. But, when trying

I get this error:

quotaon: using /home/aquota.user on /dev/hda5: Invalid argument

I've read the mini-HOWTO and it doesn't mention this error :(
Can anyone help me please?

You have gotten two correct answers for two different questions :)

slocate for file names

grep for text inside the files

I'd hate to run grep on an entire hard drive, though. Can you narrow your
search any?

I'm always running behind the times, just like this old train (name that

Anyway, a few days ago I started looking into urpmi and had some success,
updating gaim. Today I was surfing and came across a great tool for
setting up sources for urpmi. Just select your version # and mirrors,
submit, and you get everything you need.

I thought that might help some other urpmi newbies out there.

Dude, welcome to the group of the enlightened. I personally think that urpmi
is one of the most powerful tools that MandrakeSoft has built and by learning
a few simple commands is much easier and faster than using the rpmdrake gui.

Icannot find any mention of

Re: [newbie] server confiuration wizards

2003-03-04 Thread Lanman
Brett! Welcome to the club! Everyone of us was New to Mandrake or Linux at one point
or another! I don't think you'll get laughed at here for asking questions, but you may
get a chuckle ro two when you remind us of the times when we went through the change
from Windows to Linux, and the mistakes we made (and some of them were really big
mistakes!). So don't give up. You'll have a lot to learn, but you;ll also get a lot of
help from this list!

On to your problem,...First, it's always a good idea to include which version of
Mandrake you're trying to setup. There can be minor and/or major differences between
versions, and knowing which one you're using would help us to be more specific in
solving your problem, and would allow many on the list to offer tips and tricks about
the specific version you've got.

It's been my experience that the Wizards have not been very helpful in setting up a
server. They are good for inputting basic information you'll need before actually
setting up the services you'd like, but not detailed enough to get things done
completely. However, these basic bits of information can be easily configured by other
means just as fast as by using the wizards. Have you tried webmin? It's a web-based
tool which resides on the server (assuming that it was installed in the first place!),
and allows you to configure your srver in great detail.

Some of the users on this list will scream at the suggestion of using webmin, and
scream about using ssh in a shell or console to do all your server configurations
and adjustments, but if you're coming from a Windows environment, webmin is probably
the ticket to get you started. There'll be plenty of time to learn command-line stuff
later.

You can access webmin by loggin into the server as any user, and opening a
web-browser, and typing the folloing URL - https://localhost:1 - Notice the s in
https ? when you get your log in prompt, use the root user's password you supplied
during the install. You should probably spend a few days just playing with webmin, so
that you can get familiar with it.

If you get into trouble, you can contact me off-list, or get more help from the list.

Good Luck, and welcome to the world of Linux!

Lanman

[newbie] CUPS: importing fonts

2003-03-04 Thread Len Lawrence
The importing fonts to CUPS saga continues. Please bear with me -
this has turned into quite an essay.

There must be somebody here who understands how CUPS references Type1
fonts. I have a problem which has resisted solution for well over two
years now. No help from the CUPS documentation, which comes in eleven
volumes, nor from www.linuxprinting.org, or from any other source.
Linux Format Magazine has refused to respond to two enquiries about
this, nor has anybody on this list responded to previous pleas for
help. I post this in the hope that some expert might be browsing the
list and willing to shine a little light on this shadowy corner of the
UNIX world. Any answer needs to be useful in the context of Mandrake
and portable from 8.2 to 9.* - I gather that there has been a recent
change in the way that CUPS and Ghostscript interact.

My specific problem is adding more typefaces to PostScript files
generated from one of my home grown applications; i.e. the file might
reference Andale Mono, Verdana, Tahoma, Densmore or whatever. Yes, I
do have a Window$ licence, OS not installed. These are all available
to X and to OpenOffice.org but not apparently to CUPS, and CUPS does
not appear to have a regular mechanism for importing fonts.
Presumably everything has to be done by hand. I have converted the
TrueType fonts to Type1 .pfb files and placed these in the
/usr/share/cups/fonts directory under the names, for example Verdana,
AndaleMono, Verdana-Bold, etc, in imitation of the existing font names
(and restarted CUPS) but they still print as the default Courier
typeface. The default set of fonts are listed in the PPD file in
/etc/cups/ppd but it is not clear how font information should be added
to this file. The meaning of the various fields is not documented.

This may all be nonsense. Maybe the font files should go somewhere in
the Ghostscript font path together with fonts.dir, fonts.scale and
fonts.alias files. I really don't have a clue.

Before I sign off, this is my impression of how CUPS works:

lpr - CUPS - GS filter PPD
   ||
   ||
   pstoraster - driver
|
|
 spooler? - printer

This again may be wrong. Please correct me somebody.

In words; a postscript file, for instance, is given to lpr aka
lpr-cups which passes it on to Ghostscript for filtering (if it were
raw text it would be converted to PostScript format). If the printer
is not PostScript capable, the file is fed to the rasterization
section which generates a bitmap of the printed page. This then goes
to a printer specific driver which converts it into a series of
graphics commands native to the printer. The driver may consult the
PPD file for defined or allowed options as well and the result is
delivered to the spooler which stores it on disk for a while before
it, or some other daemon, dumps it to the printer.

Somewhere in there the system must try to locate the font resource
specified in the PostScript file, but where exactly, and what form
does the resource take?

All this has taken up far more than the 3.5 minutes I have to spare
each day (and I am not kidding) so help would be appreciated and would
surely be of interest to other members of the list.

First way. Open any of consoles (like konsole or rxvt). su to root (that is,
type 'su' and give the password it asks). Type 'urpmi wizdrake'. Insert any
CDs it asks. Done.
Second way. Run Mandrake Control Center. Find package management section. It
should be pretty much obvious from there.
After its done, a new section (probably called Servers) appears in Mandrake
Control Center, providing you with simple wizards for setting up common
servers.
Warning: using these wizards is hazardous! You will get the job done fast but
without learning anything :-)) Also they are rather simplistic. Even a
little bit more sophisticated task will require additional tweaking.
