[newbie-it] W2KP e Mandrake... piccolo problema con gli HD
CIao! sempre io. Ho 2 HD sul PC. All'inizio l'HD era 1 (hda) e vi ho installato Windows 2000 Professional. Suggerimenti? It's extremely unbelievably hard to find modems that are compatible to Linux. I would have 'converted' many friends who have computers to Linux, I would even install Linux in their computers, but when I ask them what kind or brand of modem they have, either they do not know it or it is an on-board modem that is Windows-dependent. Maybe this impression is not so bleak. But I'm sure you guys out there can enlighten me. JM This is a very good point, mate; and in all actuality, I've chucked a wobbly before just because I couldn't either get a modem working, or couldn't get PPP up and running easily enough; what is needed is something NOT like the MCC, but a standalone wizard or some such that would not only detect most normal modems, but also the winmodems (or rather, have better support for the winmodems - like the HST/HSP - the Conexant chipsets) so that first time newbies can literally do a few clicks here and there and voila! be on the net - and yeah, I know that some people are going to say Well, MCC works great for me! - but in reality, it does lack the friendliness the MS Windows users are used to... With that said, THAT would be one means by which people would switch more readily - ease of getting on the net. There were also flaws and so on with their innitial testing, like different versions and so on. Turns out that the newer version of Gnumeric is a lot slower than the older one, and so on. But heck, if that's the only reason that people think Gentoo is great, then they are mislead. It's also very stable, as everything gets built for your machine, from your machine, with programs that are on your machine, manually configured (if needed) by you. It's a lot more work than a standard Mandrake install, I can promise you that, but it does wonders on my laptop. To give an example: When I first bought my laptop (4 months ago or so) the first thing I did was Mandrake, as I've used Mandrake for years. Most things worked, however with the same setup as I have now (Fluxbox, Firebird and so on [lighter programs than Gnome / KDE, Mozilla) I was gettign a battery life of 2 hours on a full recharge. Now, after installing Gentoo, I get just over 3 hours. Surely that says something? Both kernels were self_compiled, and I had taken out any shit from Mandrake that I didn't need. [newbie] XML coding
I was under the impression that one of the benefits of the XML file format is that your data is human-readable. But when I open a OOo text doc that I just made in a text editor, I see only a little human readable stuff, and none of it is my document. Most of it is binary. What's the deal? I've just received my 9.1 PowerPack and haven't had the time to complete the install. I did use Mandrake 8.x but lost the hard-drive, got busy with work and never had the time to reinstall. I've set aside some of the weekend to get mandrake back up and running. To my questions: 1. does anyone know what's up with Mandrakesecure.net? I've tried to access it for the past few days to catch up on security advisories and related installation tips, etc. but I always get a 404 site not found error. 2.does anyone know what happened to Freezer Burn? I used to use this site back when I was using Mandrake 7.2/8. On a related note, is there a list of Mandrake-related websites hosted by Mandrake users? In the past, I've found such sites to be a wonderful source of information both for the newbie and for more advanced issues.. 3.are there any 9.1 installation hiccups I should know about? My hardware was OK with 8.0 so I'm assuming it's OK with 9.1. Is this a safe assumption to make? That's all for now. Thanks for any input you can give. madwand For shame using Outlook Express to post to a Mandrake list! j/k ;-) The only thing I've run into installing 9.1 was on an IBM Thinkpad T23 laptop. The video drivers for the SuperSavage chipset don't work correctly so you get no X. Other than that, I've successfully installed it on NUMEROUS other multi-boot systems without even a hiccup.
