[newbie] setting up to update the distributed kernel

2003-11-21 Thread don fisher
I am trying to change some of the defaults in the distributed kernel.
My experience has been with RedHat, until they raised the flag;-)

How does one get from the source distribution, with all of the patches
etc, to a /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-10mdk tree I can modify and build
from. When I installed the RPM, it put the sections in /usr/src/RPM...
like one would expect if not building a kernel.

I could find no documentation that did not assume a /usr/src/linux
directory exists.

Sorry if this is a dumb one.

Try to disable the highpoint in the BIOS just to see if that is causing the
hangup. I know it won't give give you a drive to install on, but if it boots
past that point, you have narrowed down the problem. I have a hpt 372 and
have not had a problem though. Is it set as a RAID device or a standard ATA
controller.

[newbie] Setting up XFce4

2003-11-21 Thread Terence J. Golightly
Greetings,

I posted a note several days ago, then I stopped receiving messages from
the list. I checked the archives and didn't find anything past the 15th.
I just resubed and will try again. If you responded to my message
before my apologies.

A while ago I downloaded and installed (1st four rpms in order) the
latest XFce4 rpms created by fellow listmember Todd Slater
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Now I am trying to setup the wm selector on
my login screen to display Xfce 4 as a valid selection. I visited his
web site http://clevername.homeip.net/xfce4/ and have the emails saved
from September regarding this, but I have not been able to set this up
for gdm. Is there a man page/other docs for gdm somewhere that would
allow me to edit the displayed desktops/wms (window mgr sessions)? The
gdm configuration program doesn't display any apparent ability to change
them. A google of "gdm man pages" didn't produce anything for me. I
would like to setup XFce4 as an alternative to gnome and then maybe
setup pekwm on it.

Thanks,

Terry

The things that I should do that I can think of are:
1. Modify the zones in named

anyway,don't know about the others).

[newbie] Trying again

2003-11-21 Thread Charles A Edwards

This never seems to make it though.
If anyone has been receiving it please let me know so that I can stop
sending it.

I have updated the 9.2 gaim rpms avaiable from my site to sync them with
the current cooker rpms.
This mdk release includes the gaim-festival plugin and does require that
festival and its depend be installed, use urpmi for that.

Also added to the site are bookcase-0.7.1-0.1
a KDE application for keeping track of your book collection/videos etc

and dlume-0.1.2-0.1
a Gtk 2-based address book

For those who use alternate WMs dlume is a nice address book in that it
is WM independent.

I have today also uploaded sylpheed-claws as 0.9.6claws-4.5mdk which
includes 2 additional plugins.

fetctinfo-plugin can inserts headers containing some download
information: UIDL, Sylpheeds account name, POP server, user ID and
retrieval time and can be quite useful in creating/tuning filters.

and lcdproc-plugin which allows usage of an an external LCD module, like
the ones made by Matrix Orbital or CristalFontz, or even one of those
cheap-and-easy-to-assemble HD44780-based ones, to display the number of
unread/new messages.

Also added is a hdlist.cz where-by urpmi can now be used to install my
pkgs.

urpmi.addmedia eslrahc http://www.eslrahc.com/9.2/ with hdlist.cz

I have just now added mdk rpms for Xfce4.

The xfce4 rpms will not be visible yet on the site in your browsers, as
I have not yet updated the index.html but if you add the site in urpmi
they can be installed using urpmi or rpmdrake.

You will need to open a port on your router. The details on this depend on the
router. Typically you tell it what port you want to open, and the lan IP of
the computer to which traffic on that port should go.
You can set the port here:
control center->internet&network->destop sharing->network tab
It looks like it uses port 5900 by default, so try opening that first.

I don't know much about internet phone services, but there's something
of that sort available through GnomeMeeting. Try reading their
website. If it turns out to be a possibility, they have a helpful
and not *too* active mailing list. HTH

According to a message on the expert list, apparently at some point
sympa lost its connection and the ability to send. This resulted in
all the messages remaining in the queue being bounced. Bounced
message = bad address in sympa's eyes, so all those addresses were
unsubbed. This affected the majority of subscribers to all the
mandrake lists.

Yes, you're right, permissions problem. I did have this, but it's a
long time back, so I'm digging for memory. I think you may actually
have to delete the file, as well as setting user permissions, but try
just perms first.

The other thing, is that efax when used from kword generates a log
file, which you can see from the efax screen that asks for fax
number. In there you should see the name of a log file, which is
likely to start with T then the telephone number. That gives you
info about the failure, but in this case it is likely to be similar
to your messages above. HTH

[newbie] How to turn-off power savings mode?

2003-11-21 Thread Vikas B N
Hi All,

I have installed Mandrake 9.1 on a DELL
Optiplex GX260. The window manager I am
 using is - enlightenment.

Now, there is a "feature" which turns off
the monitor after a few idle minutes.
I want to disable this feature.
Is there any way that I can do this.

I had googled around for a solution,
consequently some of the things that
 I have already tried are:

 1.xset s off
 xset blank/noblank, etc.

 2.set wmtp off

 3.xset -dpms

4.turned off the power mgmt settings in the
   screensaver.

None of these worked. Is there any thing that
 I have missed out. Maybe, XF86Config-4 ??

I think part of the problem was that the 1100 members subscribed
were plenty out of date, and we were seeing several email addresses
go bad per day. (reminds me of the huge computers, that once old

[newbie] Firewall Rules Won't Stick

2003-11-21 Thread Rocket
This question relates to the older Mandrake Linux Firewall 7.2.

Through the firewall's admin functions I set up a public rule that allows
all SMTP inbound traffic through the firewall and forwards it to 192.168.3.3
Once I set up that rule everything works fine and the mailserver on
192.168.3.3 receives inbound port 25 mail normally...BUT.If I ever
shut down or reboot the firewall system I MUST go back into the admin
function and reset this rule to allow SMTP through the firewall and to
forward it to 192.168.3.3 Obviously this rule does not "stick" and only
lasts for the current session. ?? Is there somewhere I can make this
rule in the config files so it becomes permanent rather than having to go
into the admin functions at each reboot?

[newbie] 9.2 fax fails

2003-11-21 Thread et
since the only messages I have seen were about the list,,, I guess I will
attempt to quit beating my head ion a corner, and ask for help.

I am running 9.2, and got my 'benq usb u340' scanner to work, which was doa in
9.1, but worked good since 8.0. now I need to be able to scan and fax. (I had
to edit /etc/san.d/sanpscan.conf to show the correct *.bin file) the problem
is I have installed efax, but when I try to fax from xsane, it scans, and
then acts like it faxed, but returns focus way to quick, no errors popup, and
no choice to put in a phone number,,,etc.
I had the modem (external USR serial) turned off during install, but kppp
finds it just fine at /dev/modem or /dev/Stty0. I think it must be a
configuration issue with efax,,, so I look in the configuration menus...
nothing.. applications has an efax-gtk, so I try that
this is the errors I get (after attempting to set it to answer a call;
Socket running on port 9900
efax-0.9a: 01:05 Error: can't open pre-lock file /var/lock/TMP..21026:
Permission denied
efax-0.9a: 01:05 done, returning 2 (unrecoverable error)
efax-0.9a: 03:33 Error: can't open pre-lock file /var/lock/TMP..21029:
Permission denied
efax-0.9a: 03:33 done, returning 2 (unrecoverable error)

hmmm a permissions problem on /varlock/TMP?
any ideas?
TIA

Ed

BTW, Eric

When you resubbed me yesterday (day before?) I had to confirm when
sending an email to list.
Maybe that was my clue that I had been unsubbed again?

Well it does that any time a non list member sends a message to newbie,
it asks for confirmation in order to confirm identity, which is fair
enough, no, I guess and that is all it is some time yesterday around
11.00GMT something removed an entire list membership of all the sympa
lists. Human error or virus ???

I don't have a clue whats up. I have not had a message from the
mandrake newbie list since about Monday morning. The rest of my email
seems to be coming through just fine. At first I thought maybe
Mandrake was doing some work on their server and it was temporally
down. Or perhaps some virus or worm had severly overloaded the
internet somewhere. I have really been much to busy for the last few
days to worry about it, I figured what ever the problem was it would
clear up in a day or 2. Now it has been 4 days and still not a single
message from the list but you are saying that you were getting the
usual list traffic until 11 0clock this AM. I have no idea!!
If your mail from the list should start to come through again
please let me know. It has been a bit over 4 hours since I sent my
message out to the list and yours is the only reply that I have got.

  THANKS for the reply
   Marc

I'm starting to get resub list messages again, only those
though,no old
list members, so I guess the whole former list went cyber heaven.
It is
going to take time for people to resubmit their names to the newbie
list
again.

Just as a matter of fact,
resubmit your membership by sending an email to,

just FWIW, I was unsubbed too - I just resubbed yesterday. I think I was
off for about 3 or 4 days - did I miss much?

Yup. Mail is scarce, right now, and much of it about the list
problems, but if you haven't had anything for 24 hours you had better
re-sub.

That mass unsubbing didn't affect me.
But I haven't had any newbie or expert mail for 24 hours. Has there been
another wave?

That's always a good idea. Also, if it's something that many people
may come up against, posting the solution on the TWiki pages is good.
People do use both the TWiki and the archives to look for solutions.
