I've never had one of those so I wouldn't be sure about the Asus but if you
want to be sure:

As a rule try to avoid cardbus cards, a lot of them work but quiet a few don't
or demand some defty fiddling with IRQ settings.

If your friend ever wants to reuse the card on an older machine you need a
card that's made for slot 1, on the plus: practically all of those work
straight-out on all distribs be they however small. Nice again with older
hardware: say turning an old P133 laptop into a firewall/router or server or
as thin client like machine.

Slot 1 devices have slightly different notches on the insert side of the card
so one usually can't insert slot 1's into slot 2's but vice versa is no
problem. If you can find one on the cheap, buy it...they're getting rare.

The same goes for wireless cards BTW, the ones wich aren't cardbus and carry
prism2 chips are getting rare too, and those are the nice ones for setting up
your own access point or just monitoring the vicinity. Old cheapo hardware is
very good for that sort of stuff:)

Good luck,
HarM

pro version worksDang, fell for it again:(

Is that Athlon XP or AMD64?

This appears to be the same (except for versions) ghostscript packages on a
working MDK91 system. I tried setting LogLevel to debug, but it didn't
seem to add anything useful.

 Programmes need it to be.

 John

Could be, but I suspect that's at the root of your problem.
Try transcode again with scsi off. As to your comment about my
transcode use. like you I just STW and docs for examples an
try 'em (same for mencoder). I've often come across those that
seem to conflict. I've also come across some that had typos, were
lacking parts, or were just plain wrong. For example, a resize
CL for mencoder straight from the mplayer online docs at mplayers
site:

mencoder input.mpg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 -vf
scale=640:480-o output.avi

The example lacks a space between 640:480 and -o. It also
lacks any sound. I edited it to

mencoder input.mpg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 -vf
scale=640:480 -oac mp3lame -o output.avi

Which works great. But I had to get the sound part (-oac
mp3lame), and where in the CL to put it, from various Google
searches. BTW, that resize command works for input formats other
than .mpg. It substantially reduces file size while maintaining
near original video and sound quality. I've used it to down size
(to CDr size) .avi and .wmv formats. It works for .mov, but sound
is lost, at least for the ones I've tried.

So, I believe you've got a few thing to look at, get rid of
SCSI emulation, keep lookin for examples, and encoding often
involves 100% cpu (and chipset) usage for many minutes. Make sure
your hardware is up to the task.

At least you're not so afflicted as me. Rather than ask for
help, I just keep fsckin around till I get it to work ;)

[newbie] mdk 9,2 vs Engarde Commuinity your opinion requested

2004-01-17 Thread Troy T. Hall

Hi everyone;
First let me start out by saying I know I
goofed. I turned off iptables and got hacked. so now I'm trying to
consider the best distro for ME. The server was nat'd behind a gigafast
router onto a private IP so I thought I was safe. Thats what I get for
thinking.

At anyrate, I've been using Engarde for a few years
and had never been hacked while using it. But it doesn't have X
capabilities out of the box, because its designed to be an extremely secure
server envirorment ONLY.

My goal is for my server to handle mail, dns, web,
mailing list, mysql, php(?), and an e-store. It will only serve 2
domains. It really is not important that X is on there at all. It is
only important that its smart enough to protect me from me. So that I know my
customers data is safe and secure. I'm willing to invest time to learn the
intricasies of a distro but I want to pick one and stick with it.
Otherwise I'll continue to chase my tail and never learn anything. Both
distro's have excellent commuinity support.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Try wget. A command line tool. very easy to handle:

wget http://server.tld/directory/file2download

and if the line has been cut resume with

wget -c http://server.tld/directory/file2download

There are graphical tools for wget, but command line is the
simplest way.

only comes with gimpprint 4.2.5. I have some familiarity with compiling
software but I'm not sure what components I need to upgrade and exactly
how to go about it without breaking printing support in applications.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

If it is mentioned in the list you get with lsmod see what ifconfig gives

If it has, you're in business;)

[newbie] help needed with CD burning problems

2004-01-17 Thread andrei raevsky
Hi,

I am using K3b (K3b 0.9 under KDE 3.1.3 with Mandrake 9.2) to burn CDs
without any problems. However, when I start K3b I get the following
message:

No support for ATAPI with cdrdao
You will not be able to use all your reading devices as copy sources since
there is at least one not configured to use SCSI emulation and your system
does not support ATAPI with cdrdao.
Solution: The best and recommended solution is to enable ide-scsi (SCSI
emulation) for all writer devices. This way you won't have any problems.

It also seems that I cannot burn (CD copy) from my regular CD drive
(CREATIVE 52x CD-ROM 52x IDE 8.2MB/s / 128K / ATAPI ) to my CD
burner.(I/O Magic External USB 2.0 52x24x52 CD-RW Drive).

The thing that bothers me most is that while my computer was running
Windoze2000 I could copy from this CD drive to another external drive
without any problems.

Otherwise, the CD drive works without problems.

How do I enable scsi-ide (SCSI-emulation) for my CD drive?

Alternatively, can you reccommend another application to copy CDs?

Thanks!

Andrei

Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately I had already looked
through that thread, without finding what I was looking for. The problem
I'm faced with is currently having an Epson C64 that I would really like
to get working under mdk 9.2. The solution suggested of using Turboprint
doesn't seem suitable since the printer is not listed as being
supported. There is also a link to what looks like Epson reference
drivers (sample client server?) but I don't really know where to go
with that- are they easily installed to enable printing in various mdk
applications?

It seems to me that the ideal solution would be to 'simply' update the
printing mechanisms of mandrake. My understanding is (correct me if I'm
wrong!) that this would mean upgrading gimp-print, probably from 4.2.5
to 4.2.6. If that upgrade and configuration task is too complex, and so
beyond the scope of this mailing list, then fair enough but I'm hoping
that someone on this list has some experience with this and can point me
in the right direction.

Once again any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Cameron.

I've done installs on 3 laptops (2 IBM, 1 Gateway) with that integrated
card--it is very common. It works flawlessly on all 3 machines (2 run 9.2,
one has 9.1). The driver is the pro100, I think--the laptops are at work,
so I can't check.
But, that card does work, so don't stop messin' with it yet!

Thanks. I will keep playing as long as my buddy will let me hack away at
it. I think he is getting a little impatient though. I had it working at
first but then it didn't after a reboot into windows. Then it worked
again (without me doing anything). Then it didn't. I tried at first with
the eepro100 driver mandrake chooses for me. I tried using the tool
eepro100-diag to turn off the sleep mode (which i had read may help with
this card). It seemed to turn off sleep mode but the card still didn't
work. Then I read somewhere that eepro100 is not the best driver for the
card and that i should be using intel's e100 driver. Switched to that
with no luck. Downloaded, compiled/installed a newer version of
e100...still no love. Wondering if it could somehow be related to the
router we use at work (this is all being done on my lunchbreaks).

I have checked the output of dmesg at times. Usually it says something
to the effect of either 1)
card is up at full duplex (followed by: card is down, and sometimes
alternating between the two) when i use the eepro100 driver (IIRC)
 or
2) The card is in promiscous mode, followed by, the card left promiscous
mode (this occurs over and over, IIRC this is what dmesg shows when i
use the e100 driver)

Don't know if this tells you anything usefull.

That should work with 8139too module, try insmod 8139too if it isn't
mentioned with lsmod in a terminal as su/root.

Different card, but as far as I can tell lsmod does show the driver is
loading, it is in the list.

Check dmesg if it won't
load for comments on it.

See my other post in the thread for my poorly remembered recollections
of the output from dmesg.

If it is mentioned in the list you get with lsmod see what ifconfig gives
i.e. if it's there as eth0 or eth1.

I will check ifconfig, thanks for the suggestion.

If not try getting it up with a static IP
thus: ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 up and see what that gives.i.e. try
ifconfig again to see if it has appeared now.

If it has, you're in business;)
If not, come back and we'll take you step by step.
Good luck,

Hadn't thought of trying a static ip, i will try that on monday. Thanks
again, appreciate the help and the offer of help.

Another thing that I just remembered. When i start up, eth0 seems to
fail if the cable is plugged in, but says OK if it isn't. Dont know if
that tells you anything.

The mplayer gui will play it. Open mplayer and enter the url into the open,

Make sure that you have the latest version of mplayer (1.0 pre3) and the win32

I believe this is an important point -- not all servers allow
downloads to resume.

Most of the browsers I've tried will resume downloads, i.e., Mozilla,
Netscape, Opera, Konqueror.

I'm not absolutely sure that gFTP resumes because I couldn't find that
on the drop-down menus, but I'm halfway sure I did resume a particularly
large download (i.e., 60Mb) using it. I like it because I can copy
multiple files from one remote server to another remote server directly.
