[newbie] probs with firewire HDD in MDK 10.0
hi all, In 9.1 MDK linux, I had no probs mounting mu Firewire HDD. After plugging it in and starting it up, I would need to mount it from /dev/scsi/bus0/lun0/target0. Why is it different in MDK 10.0? It doesn't even recognize the device, unless, I power it on and reboot MDK, in which case there is a tool to add it to /etc/fstab. I would like to hear your experience. bye... [newbie] Floppy Problems
This problem has plagued me for over 2 months and I'm at my wits end. I've been in the process of moving for the past 3-4 months so haven't been able to do anything about it. The problem , in a nutshell, is that I can not write to my floppy or CD-R drives, even as root. The message is that 'access is denied, could not write to /mnt/floppy/foo.bar. If I use Supermount to mount the floppy and look at the permissions under properties the option selected is 'Owner can view content'. If I try to select 'Owner can view and modify content' there is an error message that changing the attributes of files is not supported with protocol devices. If I try to mount a drive manually the error message is that there are too many file systems, bad superblock, etc. If I try to unmount the drive the message is that there is no drive mounted. This problem started with MDK 10.0 as downloaded. Thinking that this was the problem, I bought the pak from Mandrake but the problem is still there. The computer is a Sony Viao laptop but I was having the same problem on my desktop machine. There are a lot of important files that desperately need backing up, someone please help! I can't seem to fnd that out from the manuals that came with my Gateway. What does your mobo manufacturer say the bios version limit on HD size is ? website Again I can''t find that information in a manual but I will try to find the website of the motherboard manufacturer. Thanks for the tip on where to look. You can often updated bios to recognise larger drives. I'll try that. Thanks. Eric Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Go to the mobo website and start digging , especially in the bios update sections, look up your bios version, and it invariable says something about having upgraded the bios to detect HD size XXXgigs, My bet is yours is 130Gigs, and then some time later they bring out a later bios vesion that upgrades it again to maybe 260Gigs and so on and so forth. You may be unlucky and no mention is made of the HD size limitation, if so you need to contact your mobo manufacturer support desk and ask them what the HD size limitations are on your bios version and can you upgrade. Before you do though look up what the bios is saying about your HD size , if it sees it all it, it ain't a bios limitation, but if it sees 130G then I would think this is where to start. Sometimes the OS itself has HD limitation but I don't think it is your case . Some modern HD's also have a cap limit Jumper and yours may have it set up as limited to 130G, but that is a large cap limit in my experience. It may be a bug but should not affect your install. In reality a person only needs CD1 and CD2 to get up and running. Hope this helps. Good luck. tsw __ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Re: [newbie] Console command to format a usb pendrive?

It is fat 32 now and somehow write protected but has no manual write protection switch. Any ideas are appreciated. I think I have the commands from Running Linux but want to be sure so I don't screw this thing up any worse than it is. Thanks, Well, normaly you would use mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1, where the a in sda1 may change, depending on how mayn SCSI devices, and what order they are dected. But if your PEN drive is write protected, that may not work. You may be stuck running the Windows software for it, and using that to unlock the drive. It sounds like write protect is implimented in firmware in the drive. I don't know if the USB drivers support the SCSI commands to remove write protect, or even if the pen drive uses the standard SCSI commands... Mikkel Late getting back on this, but, no go. The drive does not show up anywhere. Looking to see if something is wrong with the ports. -- Dennis M. Linux user #180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
