Sounds like hardware. Probably getting hot. Check all your fans, blow out all
the dust. Install lm_sensors and gkrellm - monitor your temperatures. Run a
program like memtest86 or the torture test on mprime. Watch your temp via
gkrellm while it runs - see if the temp goes way up and it locks up.
Memtest86 will check your memory in case something is bad there.

[newbie] probs with firewire HDD in MDK 10.0

2004-07-05 Thread Kesav . Tadimeti
hi all,
In 9.1 MDK linux, I had no probs mounting mu Firewire HDD. After plugging it in and
starting it up, I would need to mount it from /dev/scsi/bus0/lun0/target0.

Why is it different in MDK 10.0? It doesn't even recognize the device, unless, I power
it on and reboot MDK, in which case there is a tool to add it to /etc/fstab.

I would like to hear your experience.

[newbie] Floppy Problems

2004-07-05 Thread Rich
This problem has plagued me for over 2 months and I'm at my wits end.
I've been in the process of moving for the past 3-4 months so haven't
been able to do anything about it. The problem , in a nutshell, is that
I can not write to my floppy or CD-R drives, even as root. The message
is that 'access is denied, could not write to /mnt/floppy/foo.bar.
If I use Supermount to mount the floppy and look at the permissions
under properties the option selected is 'Owner can view content'. If I
try to select 'Owner can view and modify content' there is an error
message that changing the attributes of files is not supported with
protocol devices.
If I try to mount a drive manually the error message is that there are
too many file systems, bad superblock, etc. If I try to unmount the
drive the message is that there is no drive mounted.
This problem started with MDK 10.0 as downloaded. Thinking that this
was the problem, I bought the pak from Mandrake but the problem is still
there.
The computer is a Sony Viao laptop but I was having the same problem on
my desktop machine.
There are a lot of important files that desperately need backing up,
someone please help!
Rich

I don't see anything that's related to synth in alsamixer nor in

Maybe it's named WaveTable? I think the problem is that rosegarden isn't
connected to the WaveTable synthesizer with aconnect. I don't have any

client. You shouldn't have to use Timidity since your soundcard has a

0 'TiMidity port 0 '
1 'TiMidity port 1 '
[EMAIL PROTECTED] frans]$ aconnect 128:0 129:0

And I could play and hear a midi file in Rosegarden :) I installed
TiMidity++ and timidity-instruments. Good luck!

running nv and not even know it.

The reason this was done was that too many people complained that X would not
start and they got dumped to a command line if the nvidia driver was not
installed properly. Now X will start, but the driver reverts to nv, so a lot
of people that had troubloe installing the nvidia driver are running nv and
they don't even know the thing didn't get installed properly.

Go to the mobo website and start digging , especially in the bios
update sections, look up your bios version, and it invariable says
something about having upgraded the bios to detect HD size XXXgigs, My
bet is yours is 130Gigs, and then some time later they bring out a later
bios vesion that upgrades it again to maybe 260Gigs and so on and so
forth. You may be unlucky and no mention is made of the HD size
limitation, if so you need to contact your mobo manufacturer support
desk and ask them what the HD size limitations are on your bios version
and can you upgrade.

Before you do though look up what the bios is saying about your HD size
, if it sees it all it, it ain't a bios limitation, but if it sees 130G
then I would think this is where to start.

Sometimes the OS itself has HD limitation but I don't think it is your
case .

Some modern HD's also have a cap limit Jumper and yours may have it
set up as limited to 130G, but that is a large cap limit in my
experience.

Am I calling it correctly? This is what the html page looks like:

The first parmiter passed to a program or script is always the program
name, with path, if any. Try this script.

#!/bin/bash
echo $0
Name is anything you like, make it executable, and try calling it using

blanking out instead of trying to display beyond its frequency range.

Right now, I have timidity++ and timidity-instruments rpm's installed,

  spadmin - /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice*

If i run soffice, i get soffice. If i run spadmin, i get the
  printer setup box.

The first parmiter passed to a program or script is always the
program name, with path, if any. Try this script.

 #!/bin/bash
 echo $0

Name is anything you like, make it executable, and try calling it
using different path names. (./script, /home/mikkel/bin/script,
 etc)

That is cool. I always muck my way thru bash, but i would like to
get more fluent in it...

thanks for the further explanation.

OK. So I try connecting it and something isn't working right. Rosegarden
is port 128, and port 65 is the kernel connection to the onboard
wavetable on my SB Live, right?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$ aconnect -o

0 'EMU10K1 MPU-401 (UART)'

0 'Emu10k1 Port 0 '
1 'Emu10k1 Port 1 '
2 'Emu10k1 Port 2 '
3 'Emu10k1 Port 3 '
client 128: 'Rosegarden sequencer' [type=user]
0 'Rosegarden '
[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$ aconnect 128:1 65:1
Connection failed (Invalid argument)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$ aconnect 129:0 65:1
Connection failed (Invalid argument)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$ aconnect 128:0 65:0
Connection is already subscribed

We see from that the only thing it's taking is a connection from port
128 (i.e. rosegarden) to port 65 (the Wavetable) -- despite that, there
is no sound output at all.

This problem has plagued me for over 2 months and I'm at my wits

so haven't been able to do anything about it. The problem , in a
nutshell, is that I can not write to my floppy or CD-R drives,
even as root. The message is that 'access is denied, could not
write to /mnt/floppy/foo.bar.
If I use Supermount to mount the floppy and look at the
permissions under properties the option selected is 'Owner can
view content'. If I try to select 'Owner can view and modify
content' there is an error message that changing the attributes

If I try to mount a drive manually the error message is that
there are too many file systems, bad superblock, etc. If I try
to unmount the drive the message is that there is no drive
mounted.
This problem started with MDK 10.0 as downloaded. Thinking that
this was the problem, I bought the pak from Mandrake but the
problem is still there.
The computer is a Sony Viao laptop but I was having the same
problem on my desktop machine.
There are a lot of important files that desperately need backing

Please post your /etc/fstab
Kaj Haulrich.
fs=ext2:vfat didn't help either.
This is looking more and more like a permissions problem. The same
problem exists with the CD and I've discovered that I can't copy the
files to any of my Windows folders either.
I'm living in at an interim address until the Fall and my 9.2 CDs are in

going to have to abandon Mandrake.

In a console, type : which realplay

instead of using the command 'which', you could use the command
'type'. Using type also tells you if it is an embedded bash

Try 'type time', and then 'which time', and you'll see the
difference.

~ $ which time
/usr/bin/time
~ $ type time
time is /usr/bin/time
On s imilar note (ie shell tricks)
I really do like the new extended tab functionality for bash. No
need to ESC ! anymore.
Well I guess that wouldn't be a good example would it? lol, didn't
realize there really was an executable called time. Try 'type type' and
'which type'. Then you'll see

I have come to the conclusion that which is a good program for using in
scripts, in case the whole pathname has to be specified, but if you're
just looking to see if the program exists, then type is the way to go.

Try umount the drive with umount -l /mnt/cdrom and then put in the cd,
this has happened with me before.

Just a follow-up as per etiquitte. The RPM package bootsplash was what I was looking
for, which contains all the scripts/etc that make the bootspash actually work. The
bootsplash-themes package and PLF packages have a lot of themes that work with the
bootsplash RPM.

I just wanted to know because I wanted to add the logos back from a minimal install
(ex. server) for prettiness. Thanks for the quick response guys.

You should also have the option to click next or
continue with install or something to that effect,
if you do not have the forth CD. It may be a bug but
should not affect your install. In reality a person
only needs CD1 and CD2 to get up and running. Hope
 this helps. Good luck.

Well, normaly you would use mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1, where the a in sda1

dected. But if your PEN drive is write protected, that may not work.
You may be stuck running the Windows software for it, and using that to

firmware in the drive. I don't know if the USB drivers support the SCSI
commands to remove write protect, or even if the pen drive uses the
 standard SCSI commands...

Late getting back on this, but, no go. The drive does not show up anywhere.
Looking to see if something is wrong with the ports.
