Gerry Good point Gerry ! Also as a newbie who subscribes to several lists it is not uncommon for me to get 300+ emails/day. On real hectic days those have a tendency to get lost in the shuffle.

[newbie] Aurora is installed but does not run at startup?

[newbie] HP Deskjet 612C....configuring
After configuring this printer several times I cannot get it to print. When I try to set it up in linuxconf it complains about a wrong printcap file. If I try to print a test page nothing happens. If I try to print from any program I get a message about "unable to open parallel port device file: no such device" Running tunelp lp0 -s says "no such file or directory" PnP is disabled in BIOS(that got my cable modem running) and ECP is enabled on the parallel port. /etc/modules.conf pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias sound-slot-0 es1371 post-install snd-card-ens1371 modprobe snd-pcm-oss alias block-major-11 scsi_hostadapter pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 /proc/parport/0/irq alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi alias eth0 ne alias usb-interface usb-uhci options ne2k-pci io=1040 irq=11 options rtl8139 io=1040 irq=11 options ne io=1040 irq=11 I also have an /etc/modules.conf~ file(not sure if that should be there)? It contains all the above lines except for the last 4(stops at alias eth0 ne). As my Win98 has been down for a week with at least several days to go B4 needed parts arrive I would like to get Mandrake 7.2 install completed and backed up so that it will be my primary OS. Wife will have to learn to like it.

Re: [newbie] Cups 1.1.6 Conflicts and HP612
Dan LaBine wrote: I'm replying to Bill about his HP612 printer, and to the post about the CUPS 1.1.6 conflicts. Bill,...the reason your HP printer isn't working is because you've got "printpro" installed. Log in as root, open a terminal, fire up kpackage, and manually remove any and all printopro entries. Then using either kpackage or the Mandrake update, update "ghostscript", then get cups, cups=common, and cups-drivers. Install them in the correct order (what other way is there?) and check in DrakConf for the section called "Startup Services". You should find a new entry called "cups-lpd" . Click the button to have it start on boot-up, and just for the fun of it ( a trip down memory lane ! ) , reboot your PC. Go into DrakConf, open up "Printer Configuration", delete any printers you may already have in there, and re-install your 612. It will probably detect it automatically, but if not, try any HP printers with a 600 series model number, the lower the number the better. Thanks for the response Dan. Logged in as root/ started kpackage/ searched for printpro in installed pkgs and found nothing. Searched also using print pro. Searched thru ALL packages the same way. Nothing. In console mode as root "which printpro" produced nothing. Searched for ghostscript in INSTALLED and found it there. Also found cups, cups=common and cups-drivers aleady installed. Also a qtcups. Where to next? Bill

I have 7.2 and had to disable PnP in my BIOS to get it to activate. Had all my settings correct otherwise and rebooted, clicked on Netscape and there it was. I'm using a Realtek NIC.

Let me try it again. After numerous tries at setting up this printer nothing happens. Have tried PrinterDrake and linuxconf from root. The most constant error message I receive is regarding lp0. Trying to run tunelp "tunelp lp0 -s" gives me "no such file or directory". Trying to print from a program I get "unable to open parallel port device file: no such device" Checking thru dmesg I do not find any reference to lp0/lp1 etc., a printer or the parallel port. I figured after disabling PlugPlay in my Bios and receiving a previous reply to also reset my BIOS to ECP I did that using the AUTO option as well. HP also says that it recommends setting this printer up on ECP. Still nothing. Why isn't lp0 recognized or setup. Where can I find the setup files. Maybe I can manually load it?

I think we finally got it working. Using Netscape Messenger right now to send this test out. Deselecting Plug + Play in the BIOS did the trick. Not sure if that's gonna' be the end tho'. Win98 complains about my Ensoniq sound card configuration now ??? But I seem to be online now. Thank you very kindly for your help. Guess one of these days I'll get my printer set up too.
