[newbie] Improving Xwindows on my laptop
I have a Compaq Presario 1230 laptop with a NeoMagic MagicGraph 128ZV+ display adapter and an 800X600 display panel.I have installed 7.1 and I have not found info on how to configure KDE X to be very readable on my laptop. The setup stuff that I find assumes monitors and not panel displays. I would appreciate some assistance. Thanks...Jim I also don't see the JBL sound card in any list but that is not as critical as a GUI with legible text.
Re: [newbie] Problem with 3Com ether 3C905B under 7.1?
Michael, I had a similar problem and this is what I got from this list, Sounds like you did an automatic install under Mandrake. The automatic install does not install the dhcp client. You had to do that manually. You give no indication of which (if any) Window Manager you use so: Login as root put the initial installation cd in the cdrom drive. From the command line type 'cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS' Then type 'rpm -i dhcp-client-3.0b1pl12-4mdk.i586.rpm' Then type 'shutdown -r now' Hope this helps. I have a DSL line at home. Tried setting up a new machine (ASUS P5A w/ onboard audio, AMD K6-2/400, 32MB, 8G disk, S3 video, 3Com 3C905B ethernet adapter, Cisco 675 DSL box) with the "development" option on Mandrake 7.1 (the main "installation" CD only, downloaded from the Old Dominion University mirror in Virginia late last week). The distribution determined the correct ethernet card type, asked for an IP, the gateway IP, primary DNS, and the netmask. I gave it correct values (verified by a coworker whose home machine setup is similar). Nothing happens when I try to get outside the box. I have tried pinging the gateway IP, as well as telnetting out to known addresses for my ISP. The little yellow lights on the DSL doohickey don't flash under any circumstance, although the green lights all do. I have tried swapping the card with one in my Win95 machine, and both cards work under Win95, but neither works under 7.1 Any ideas? At this point I am assuming it is a driver problem. Is the 3C905 driver known to work under 7.1? I remember that Caldera didn't support this card in one of their releases about six months ago. Thanks, Michael __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [newbie] Ethernet and DSL
Brian, I recently installed 7.1 and had problems that folks here helped me with. This is how I set it up to finally work: This is what I did in NETCONF. Basic Host Information Host name + domain = linux.myNTserverdomain name Adaptor1 = enabled DHCP, net device = eth0, kernel module = 3c574-TX, Irq=10, all other fields blank Name server specifications (DNS) DNS is required for normal operation (selected) default domain = 10.0.0.1 IP of name server 1 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes IP of name server 2 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes IP of name server 3 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes all other fields blank Routing and gateways Set defaults = enable routing(selected) and Default gateway = 10.0.0.1 I have not done anything with the other NETCONF options You were not clear in your email what kind of DSL modem you have and if you have fixed IP addresses of your modem/router supports DHCP using NAT. The above instructions are assuming the later. Re: [newbie] Ethernet and DSL...do this first
Brian, I forgot to pass on the install info that I was given for DHCP if it is not already installed. These are the instructions given to me. Sounds like you did an automatic install under Mandrake. The automatic install does not install the dhcp client. You had to do that manually. You give no indication of which (if any) Window Manager you use so: Login as root put the initial installation cd in the cdrom drive. From the command line type 'cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS' Then type 'rpm -i dhcp-client-3.0b1pl12-4mdk.i586.rpm' Then type 'shutdown -r now' Sorry I did not send this with my earlier message...this needs to be done before the other for it to work. - Original Message - From: "Brian Jacob Rogers" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Newbie" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 28, 2000 7:38 AM Subject: [newbie] Ethernet and DSL Hi all, I am a real newbie to trying to set this up. Re: [newbie] No-one answers ?
Kev, I am a newbie to Linux also but it sounds to me like you need to change the display configuration to less (may want to start all the way down to 640 X 480). If that isn't it then there may be someincompatibility with the video board and the driver that is causing the problem. Hope this helps Jim B. - Original Message - From: Kevin A Sadler To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 23, 2000 11:44 PM Subject: [newbie] No-one answers ? Hi yoall. What's happened. No-one had my problem before ? On 21/10/00 I put forward the fact my desktop has expanded its picture to the size of my wall so all I can see on my puny 15" screen are the Application starter and Panel buttons. I have reinstalled about six times, partitioned, formatted over and over but it still looms brightly. If I could afford a 30' x 20' monitor I would have it all over yoall but I can't so I would like some help to get my graphic view back to rather normal. Thanks, anyone ! Kev Sadler
Re: [newbie] A Little Tip
I had this problem installing MDK 7.1 on my Compaq Presario laptop. I reran the install and said cancel to the request and it seemed to finish ok. What am I missing that I would have gotten with the Extensions CD? Thanks...Jim - Original Message - From: "Kelly, Christopher" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "'Newbie'" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 23, 2000 5:23 AM Subject: [newbie] A Little Tip Here's a tip for all you people who have had trouble with the installation (of MDK 7.1) regarding not being able to put the "Extensions CD" in the CR-ROM. I found that if the CD-ROM is on it's own IDE channel and it is the Master, the tray will open when it asks for the "Extensions CD". I thought it was a fluke at first, but I tested it on another machine and it worked there, too. Hope this helps some of you!! Chris Kelly Registered Linux user 185775
Re: [newbie] Networking setup for PCMCIA on laptop
More on my problem. I have just installed MDK 7.1 (sorry I didn't mention this initially) This is what I have done. Basic Host Information Host name + domain = linux.myNTserverdomain name Adaptor1 = enabled DHCP, net device = dummy0, kernel module = 3c574-TX, Irq=10, all other fields blank Name server specifications (DNS) DNS is required for normal operation (selected) default domain = 10.0.0.1 IP of name server 1 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes IP of name server 2 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes IP of name server 3 = same DNS address that I use in my other boxes all other fields blank Routing and gateways Set defaults = enable routing(selected) and Default gateway = 10.0.0.1 I have not done anything with the other NETCONF options I then exit out of that and it brings up the "status of the system" box and under "preview what has to be done" it tells me to execute /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload...and when I do that it come back with the error "Bringing up the device dummy0 Can't find a dhcp client" I should also note that today when I start the system under linux I no longer get the dongle or hub lights like I get under Windows98. Suggestions Thanks...Jim - Original Message - From: mineispooter To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, October 22, 2000 5:30 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Networking setup for PCMCIA on laptop Jim, I noticed you have a Cisco 675 on dsl. [newbie] Networking setup for PCMCIA on laptop
Hello, I have a Compaq Presario 1230 laptop with a PCMCIA card and am trying to set it up to have TCP/IP network access through my DSL service. I am connecting to a hub that is connected to a Cisco 675 external router. I have been using the NETCONF utility and have entered the LAN address of the router as 10.0.0.1 and then set up DNS addresses with my ISP. I get lights on the dongle and the hubbut no action. I am not sure how to get the system to recognize the Ethernet access through the PCMCIA card. In the Basic Host information setup I used the "dummy0" option as was recommended in the Help for the adaptor. I am not sure what to put as the "Host.Domain" entry. I have an NT server on the network and at some point want to get the Linux to see the server but the first goal is to basic network connectivity. In theadaptor setup I also enabled DHCP so the 675 would give me a NAT address. I would appreciate some help knowing what I am missing or have set up incorrectly. Do I need to know more about the PCMCIA card and configure that somewhere? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...Jim
