[newbie] Network Problems Re-Stated

2002-07-27 Thread C.Anne Wilson

Unfortunately the improvement was *very* shortlived. I downloaded a
file for
use elsewhere, started to copy it to FD, it crashed and was unrecoverable.

New start, then. I've re-installed, and have things almost back to where
they were.

Win98 clients can see my shared directories.

[homes] is not working properly:
If I enable File & print Sharing for Windows Networks
 Clients can see each other
 and the server
 and a folder marked \\username

Opening this folder shows an apparently empty folder which
cannot be written
to.

   If I remove F & P Sharing etc..
 Clients can see each other
 and the server
 and a folder marked \\username

Attempting to open this folder fails, citing unknown error.

log.nmbd has this message:

[2002/07/27 13:20:42, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:find_domain_master_name_query_fail(359)
   find_domain_master_name_query_fail:
Unable to find the Domain Master Browser name LYDGATE.NET<1b> for the
workgroup LYDGATE.NET.
Unable to sync browse lists in this workgroup.

I presume that I have missed something that is making this fail. Any
pointers, please?

I'm now certain that the slowdowns I have experienced are connected with
the
network problems. When I re-installed everything was a slick as you could
want, but the moment I wrote the smb.conf and hosts files I was back to 20
sec. open times.

Spoke too soon.

I had to boot Win98 this morning. Returned immediately to MK but have not
had any sound since. Process Management shows artsd as running.

When I 'hung up' before, it gave an error message about noatun crashing. Is
this related? noatun seems to have started at boot-up.

This is getting depressing.

Re: [newbie] child-protection for Linux?

2002-06-30 Thread C.Anne Wilson

I agree - already done that, but it was his concern that po-ups were making
it difficult for him to comply that started this exchange of ideas.

BTW, grounding had nothing to do with this, just a wakening up period that
seems to be needed every 6 months or so.

He was accessing through my shared Win98 account. So far I have not managed
to sort it out on Linux, and of course I'm spending less time Win98, so there
is another problem.

I think it may be easier for me to sort out next month when I've put together
a server box, rather than trying to run the service from this one.

This sounds interest, but it'll have to go on the back burner for now. I

I'm using .or5 from SmartSuite Millenium. vCal was at the bottom of the list
of export file types.

I don't have SS97 installed any more, but I'll try to contact a friend who

You're right, they're both there.

I'm still having problems with my sound - the startup sound arrives minutes
or hours after startup - and sure enough aRts was taking a slice of CPU and
memory. I used the hang-up (this in Process Management) and got a crash
message, though it wasn't clear just what had gone. Anyway, aRts
disappeared, so I'm waiting to see if the sound problem improves. I'm
assuming that I've got a cumulative problem, with a process never completing.

I've just logged out and back in - and the sound's fine!

[newbie] Whoopeee

2002-06-27 Thread C.Anne Wilson

Major breakthrough - I have to share. My life is bound up in my Lotus
Organizer, and this has been a major stumbling block. It seemed that
Evolution would be the way forward, but I could find no way of importing my
Organizer info.

Disappointed, I turned to WINE, hoping that would solve the problem. It
didn't work. I looked at a couple of WINE-user newsgroups, where I found the
opinion that Lotus SmartSuite as a whole was well-nigh impossible.

Then - I discolvered that Organizer can write vCal files and KOrganizer can
read them. With a little perseverence I've got the diary, anniversary,
Planner, UK Holidays, Christian Holidays sections and the ToDo list into
KOrganizer.

KAddress didn't want to know about my Contacts section, but Gnome-Card
imported the lot, automatically and trouble-free.

A small thing to many of you, I know, but my life is in order again. :-)

It also means that the balance of power has changed. I can now spend more
time in Linux and less in Win98. Of course there are still problems to
solve, but that's life.

But I definitely get sound from 4 speakers (not sure about the centre one)
when I play mp3 files. This with an analogue cable. It may be stereo
duplicated, of course, but it sounds good to me.

You could be right there - Since Tiscali began to be popular it has got very
busy, and access at evenings and weekends is now difficult. It's possible,
too that they are trying to deal with the spam problem, though I can't see
why that would cause delays, even if it did cause dropped posts. It's all

sndconfig didn't seem to make any difference. However, on the last two boots
I found that the startup sound issued forth about 10 minutes after startup.
Presumably it had given up trying to do something and just got round to it.

I downloaded this, then ran into the usual trouble with dependencies. The
message is

(GTK-CONFIG NOT FOUND)
gtk-config wasn't found. This means that you either don't have
Gtk+ OR have a pretty old one OR have a broken installation.

I downloaded all I could find, but the rpmfind link to Gtk+ shows a
collection of files. I downloaded them all, but when trying to install I was
told that they would conflict with something already in Mandrake (sorry, I
forgo to write this one down).

What do I do now?

[newbie] BIG trouble

2002-06-25 Thread C.Anne Wilson

I have been exploring, trying to find out what is happening (or not)
with these devices that I can't get working. Twice today I have got
into the Control Panel, Information, and asked for information about usb
devices, then found the Control Panel locked up. It can be minimised,
but not closed.

I could find no way out, so I had to ask for a shutdown. I got
messages about failures due to 'illegal seek'. On re-starting there
appears to have been massive damage (both times, so I daren't try again)
requiring a manual fsck to repair it. Now my system is up, but my sound
has disappeared. I'll just have to hope I haven't done irreparable damage.

Meanwhile, how should one deal with a problem like this? I know 'kill'
is supposed to get you out of trouble, but you need to know what you're
going to kill, don't you?

All help gratefully received.
