[newbie] Trinux

2000-09-22 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi everybody,

Have you seen this?:

http://trinux.sourceforge.net/

Trinux is a portable Linux distribution that boots from a single floppy disk,
loads it packages from a FAT/Ext2 partition, floppy disks, or HTTP/FTP
servers, and runs entirely in RAM.

Sounds interesting.
Cheers,

Hi,
Thank you for your help, all of you. But non of the things you told me helped,
I must have a strange keyboard. :(
I tried all possible combinations and at the end I FOUND IT!

It's ALT GR + 4 (on the upper part of the keyboard, not on the numeric one on
the right).

I hadn't tried the ALT GR key before.
That is on my keyboard, I don't know if it would work in others.

Hi Larry,
I am in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain (Atlantic Ocean, in
front of Marrocco - Africa) ; probably you haven't even heard of it, it's a very
small volcanic island, the population is around 80.000 people, but loads of
tourists.
I have a normal keyboard, I guess it must be a Spanish one because it has the
ñ, which is an exclusively spanish letter like in ESPAÑA. It also has 3
Microsoft keys, you know the ones that get you to the Start Menu in Windows and
other things that I don't know, I've never used them.

In my keyboard there isn't a ~ key.
But there is a -Alt Gr- key, which is just next to the space bar on the right,
you use it normally to type the third character of a key when it exists, like:
{ } [ ] \ | @ # ¬
I supose there must be a key for the same purpose in other keyboards, even if
they call it with a different name.
To type ~ , I have to click Alt Gr + 4 (but not in the numeric pad), although
in the 4 key you can only see the 4 and the $ (this one you type it with
Shift+4), that's why I didn't find the way to type this character.

Cheers,
Carol^

Sorry about that. I had no idea the list was naked like that where
modems was concerned. I've written the kind folks at Mandrake and hope
that they'll take my mild protest seriously.

When I saw that there was nothing on the list that dealt with Linux
friendly modems while most other hardware was addressed I could barely
believe my own eyes. My message to them reflected this and hopefully
they'll at least address it in some way.

In the mean time, for the most part ISA modems are usable while "most"
PCI modems are not. From what I've heard "all" externals are Linux
friendly and in most cases are desirable. My supervisor swears my them
and uses nothing else but his Supra Express 56K external. I myself use a
3Com US Robotics 56K modem. It's an ISA slot device and works great in
 Linux.

Do a search at the newbie list archive because this was discussed not
too long ago and there was a URL given that will lead you to a
compilation of modems and their manufacturers that will work with Linux.
At the moment I can't recall what that web address is or I'd give it to
   you now.

 happy hunting,

[newbie] Modem and Conection Problems SOLVED

2000-09-17 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi everybody,

Last week I said I would explain how I solved my modem and conection problems
in case it could help someone, as I've seen there's so many people with this
tipe of problems.
Well, I don't know "exactly" what my problems where, but I guess something to
do with IRQ, ports, modem, etc. settings. First I didn't have Kppp in my
Linux, I didn't even know it existed and I was trying to connect using ppp0 or
something like that. Now I have Kppp and it works fine.
PC:
-My modem is: Zoom VoiceVideoFax Modem 56K - Internal ISA/PnP (NOT a winmodem)
on ttyS1 (COM2 in W98)
-Pentium 133 Mhz
-2 Hard drives of 1,2 Gig. each (one with Linux Mandrake 7.0 and the other W98)
-RAM 24 Mb.
-Mouse: 3 button serial Genius on ttyS0 (COM1 in W98)
-Printer: Epson Stylus Colour 440

First of all, BIOS settings:
Go into BIOS with Del at boot.
Go to Power Management Setup:
- Set MODEM use IRQ: 3
Go to PNP/PCI Configuration:
- IRQ 3 assigned to: PCI/ISA PnP
Go to Integrated Peripherals:
- Onboard Serial Port 1: Auto
- Onboard Serial Port 2: Auto
ESC
F10 and Exit
Reboots automatically.

Now Kppp Configuration:
Go to Conections:
- Add
- Give a name to your conection
- Select the conection you've just created and click Edit
The following is all inside the Edit of the conection you've just created:
Go to mark, ( the first tab on the left, I'm not sure of the english name of
this)
- Enter conection Name
- Phone Number of your ISP
- Authentication: PAP (unless you have to use something else like CHAP, etc.)
Go to IP Address:
- Check IP set by server (unless you have a static IP)
Go to Name Servers:
- Enter the Domain Name of your ISP
- DNS, click on Add and enter the primary DNS of your ISP and then do the same
with the secondary DNS
Go to Gateway:
- Select Default gateway
- check default path to gateway
OK and back to the Kppp main configuration.

Go to Serial Device:
- Modem Device: /dev/ttyS1 (or whatever serial port you have it set to)
- Flow Control: CRTSCTS
- End of Line: CR/LF
- Conection Speed: 115200
- leave the "use file block" selected (I don't know what this is, I just left
it how it was by default )
- Modem timeout: 120 secs.
Go to Modem:
- Wait for busy line: 0 (default)
- Modem Volume: Low (I guess you can set it how you like, but when I had it on
High, when starting the conection it hanged while "setting modem volume", so I
set it on Low and now it's OK)
Go to ppp:
- pppd timeout: 120 (I don't know what this means, but I set it the same as the
modem timeout)
- check the following options: Show clock in title-bar, Disconect when closing
X Server and Minimize window when conection.

And that's about it, at least for me now it works OK. If someone has any
questions you're welcome to ask, I don't promise I can help because I'm very,
very newbie in this, but with all these problems I've had I've learnt quite a
lot, so there's always a good side on everything, even if it looks like a
terrible problem. If everything had worked OK right from the begining I
wouldn't have learnt anything new.

I hope these settings can help someone.
Cheers,
Carol^

Strange... The S3's are fairly well supported cards... maybe you had
misconfigured your monitor and X went screwey from this?

  I'll assume you are(were) running XFree86 3.3.x.

You'll want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and look for the lines
  that say "HorizSyncxx-xxx" and "VertRefreshxx-xxx". You'll want
 to
change the values you see in x's. these are the ranges of Horisontal and
  Vertical sync rates.

I would try to find the correct ranges on the internet, or maybe they are
written on the back (of course, if you still have the manual, that would
 be
the first place to look). I looked on the internet, but the only pages I
 can
find with anything resembling specs for Olivetti monitors are in German,
 and
  I cannot understand German.

Anyway, if you can find the correct values, enter them in the XF86Config
file, and try to restart x. The monitors that i could find that had specs
following the names mentioned 64Khz... so I'd start with ranges that don't
go too far above that. At thr first sign of trouble, hit
 CTRL-ALT-Backspace,
  and try something else.

That's about as much as I can offer in this arena.

Hi John,
I a very very newbie in Linux but I'll try to help you anyway.
In Kppp:
1. go to configuration
2. Put a name for your connection
3. then edit the connection
4. In the IP ADDRESS tab check the Ip Address given by server option(I'm
translating from spanish so I'm not sure if in english you use the same words,
but I supose you understand me, if not let me know, :) )
5. In the Name Server tab enter the Domain Name of your server
6. In the IP ADDRESS OF THE NAME SERVER enter first the Primary DNS and click
ADD and then do the same with the secondary DNS, and thats it.
Now you can connect, if all the rest is OK.
Oh! one thing if you don't know what are your primary and secondary DNS in
windows, go to c:/windows/winipcfg and there you can see them.

I hope this can help you,
Cheers,

Hi,
this is not an advertisement, it's in spanish.
This person would like some information on where he can get the drivers for the
Viper II Z200 of diamond. Here is the translation:

"Newbie group:
I need that you inform me, to know if you could send me or inform me in which
web I can download the drivers so that I can start Linux Mandrake in grafical
mode because the program doesn't recognise my colour board. It's the VIPER II
Z200 of diamond.
I hope that you can help me, because if it's not possible y will not be able
to run Linux on my pc.
Thank you very much. Fernando Vasconcelos."

I can speak spanish but I don't know where to get this information, so I
can't help him. If someone does and he doesn't understand then I can help with
the translation.

Si quieres tambien puedes escribirme directamente a mi dirección.

TRANSLATION OF MY REPLY (just in case..):

"Fernando, I don't know where you can get the drivers, you can try in Google and
search from there. Anyway what I CAN do is help you translate if there are
things that you don't understand because they are in english, although
apparently you do speak english, and in this case I think that if you post in
english sure you would get more answers. I know that it's not the same to
understand than to speak or write, the first thing is much easier, in fact when
we learn a new language the first thing we do is understand and THEN we start
speaking, writing, etc

Cheers and good luck,
Carol^

Ah! and don't worry if you see that there are people that don't like it if you
write in spanish to the list, there always must be all sort of things (I mean
all sort of people). Sure that on this list there are also people that will
offer you some help. If you want you can also write to me directly to my
address."

P.S.: I've translated this so EVERYONE can read what I wrote in spanish, as
I've posted this to the list and not to this person privatly.

Cheers, and "buen rollito" (this is a spanish sort of modern expression that
the young people use a lot now, it means something like "good vibrations" in a
more slang way, I supose you know what I mean, don't you?)

No offense intended, mind you, but things just don't make sense.

Can you take a bit of time, and carefully describe your setup, step by
 step,
so that we'll have a better undertanding of what you need fixed?

Re: [newbie] Re: [newbie] Solicitar información

2000-09-14 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi, I just want to add a comment to this discussion.
Fernando, at the end of his post wrote that he UNDERSTANDS english and italian,
not that he SPEAKS or WRITES these languages, which is very different. So I
supose he doesn't expect anyone to answer him in spanish, I think he asked for
help the only way he could and he will be happy to get information in english.
If he understands the answers or not is his problem, I don't think this could
bother anyone on the list, IMHO of course.

Cheers,
Carol^

Sounds like spanish to me and "solicitar informacion" is loosely "asking
for information" no need to flame the guy. Some english speaking people can
also speak spanish. I thought the list was to help fellow penguinistas. If
I'm wrong let me know and I will unsubscibe from the list. Dennis

Re: [newbie] hard to threads....

2000-09-14 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi,
just want to add another tip:
In Outlook (Windows, of course) choose:
View, Sort By to sort your mail.

Cheers,
Carol^

In windows, if you use Outlook then you select the message (any of the thread,
the first one for example), right click, choose read the thread. And that's it.
There are also other options you can change so that the messages get sorted by
thread as they come in, but I don't remember how it is, have a look in tools,
 options or the like.

 Cheers,

I hate mailing lists that are so active, it is real hard to follow all the
threads. Does anybody have any suggestions for a program or some method to sort
threads into some sort of hierarchical list? Preferably for windoze, cause I'm still
screwing around with my linux install.

  TIA
