Edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and configure it on the way I show

I'm only guesing, but since you say you have a usb mouse,
 which you didn't mention before,
maybe the problem has less to do with the mouse configuration
than maybe the usb setup itself.

KDE - information - USB Devices, displays the usb hubs,
does the mouse show up there ?
If so, what does it say .

Just copy and paste the script into your favorite editor (the script
starts with #!/bin/bash and ends with exit). Edit paths as necessary.
Save it and then make it executable by opening a terminal and giving
 the command

 chmod +x scriptname

where scriptname is whatever name you gave the script when you saved it.

I can't look at it either but with Mandrake hardware detection routines run
at boot up and if you constantly plug devices in and then unplug them, the
hardware detection routines are going to continually try to change your
configuration, including removing some drivers, installing others
repeately. For some devices, it is often better to just hook them up, get
the drivers working and then turn off the hardware detection service so
that your configuration just stays the same until you decide to change it.

Here's a bit of reading material for you:

 Directory of Linux Commands; http://www.onlamp.com/linux/cmd/

 You don't _have_ a /user/bin directory, you have a /usr/bin directory.

DON'T try to execute anything with the former, use the latter. If you don't
have the permissions already so screwed up that the system is locking you
out of things that should be available to you just follow the syntax you
are offered by the people on the list and be sure to type URLs as they
actually appear, not as you *think* they appear.

Do you really have a directory called /user?

You also have to separate directories/files with a slash, i.e.
   /user/bin/firefoxbugfix.

   Todd

I'm not sure why you're trying to change permissions on a file anyway. Let
alone an entire system directory/partition. I haven't been paying
 attention.

Then again I'm not the one having so much difficulty, am I? (-:

2004-02-21 Thread Christophe Rhein
Thanks it was just that the hiding was not activated...
But I have this file:translog.20040209202813.log what is it?

Other question:
when you install a rpm software where does it go?
Is the software automaticly available for all the users?
Thank you

It's on you if your home directory is readable or not ...

Remember that all files with '.' at the beginning (like .emacs,
.gnus, ...) are configuration files. I don't know what kind of file
manager are you using, but you can hide these configuration files and
your directory will be much more readable for you.

Try to send some file/directory name and we will tell you if you can
 remove this file/directory or not.

Hello,

More wired...
When I click on a link in Kmail it opens it in Quanta...
Is it me alone or what but for the 15 days experience of linux I have only
problems...

1/ My personal folder is not accessible any more like the desktop
configuration panel even I tried the update-menus -v comand
2/ I can not setup a printer
3/ I can not install a package like wine or Firefox because rpmDrake is not
working anymore...
4/ And now the e-mail links are not opening in Konqueror...

A good thing I have Win XP on the same computer to keep on working.
So what else can go wrong?

Open kcontrolComponentsFile Associations. The open text, and then click
on HTML. On the right hand side, move your preferred browser to the top of
the list using the Move Up button. Close kcontrol and enjoy.

Did you open it as root or as a normal user? As root, kcontrol will show
you a blank list, until you run menudrake once for the entire system. Open
a console, su - to root, and run menudrake. When you're asked, select
System which will update the menu for all users.

SAVE the refreshed list, exit , and open kcontrol as any user and change
the preferred browser to your selection as i mentioned earlier. You will
need to set the perferred browser for each user on that system, as it is
 specific to each user.

Did you try from a su control panel rpm --rebuilddb updatedb

Hit Ctl+Alt+F1 to get a text console. Log in as root
 update-menus -v
 will restore your menus
Ctl+Alt+F7 takes you back to X
Your menus will now work OK

 Visit http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php
Define yourself urpmi sources for 'updates' 'contrib', and 'plf'
Run your Mandrake Update GUI to get the latest updates.
In particular make sure you update the 'rpm' package, or else you will lose

[newbie] Witch package to update???

2004-02-17 Thread Christophe Rhein
Hello,
I followed your instruction (I didn't understand a thing but it worked)
What I don't get is this

You can then run Mandrake Update GUI to get your updates, or the Mandrake
Install GUI to install software from the online sources.
The 'contrib' source has 100's of applications not on your CDs, and the
'plf' source contains all those packages that are illegal in certain
 countries with weird laws.
What I did:
I opened the RpmDrake 9.2 and I selected the buggs. But witch one solves the
desktop bug??
Thank you

 Its a bug!
The rpm package on the update mirror fixes it, but in order to get the
update you have to define an update source. That 'Easy urpmi' page gives
you the instruction to define a source.

 Go to http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php
Tick the boxes for 'contrib', 'updates', and 'plf' and choose a mirror from
the drop down list for each one. Press the button and you will see three
command line commands to be entered.

To save you the trouble here are the commands to use :-

 urpmi.addmedia contrib
 ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.2/contrib/i586 with
 ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz

 urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandrake/9.2
 with hdlist.cz

 urpmi.addmedia --update updates
 ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/9.2/RPMS/
 with ../base/hdlist.cz

(Each of these 3 commands is on a single line)

To enter the commands open a terminal window and type su enter to become
root user. Then copy/paste the first command into the terminal by
highlighting with the mouse to copy to clipboard and press the mouse wheel
 to paste.
So long as you are online you will then see a file being downloaded which
is a database of the contents of the online software repository.

Repeat for the other 2 sources.
You can then run Mandrake Update GUI to get your updates, or the Mandrake
Install GUI to install software from the online sources.
The 'contrib' source has 100's of applications not on your CDs, and the
'plf' source contains all those packages that are illegal in certain
