Re: [newbie] Best Softwares

2004-01-26 Thread fifner the dragon
Hi,
I had this problem and tried this solution. Many things came back, even if they were
moved around a little. But there is still a really important one missing, Configure
your computer.

How do I get this one back? Or how can I access it from a console?

Thanks in advance,

Fifner

 If by missing you mean there were not many items in the menu, then that is a
 known bug in 9.2

 The solution is to do Ctl+Alt+F1 to get a text screen
 Log in as root
 Type
 update-menus -v
 Ctl+Alt+F7 to go back to your graphical screen

 Your menu will now have a lot of items in it.
 Then go and do your Mandrake Updates to install the updated package to stop it
 happening again.

 How shoud I set the encode file format to get the following
 file name: 11_Sun In Your Face.ogg

 Thanks in advance,

 Fifner

This is Linux, you'll have to do that manually to each file you
encode.

Or, you can use another app like easytag.

But seriously now folks, there should be an option in options
somewhere that says replace spaces with underscores. I'd say if
you uncheck that you should be set except for the capital
letters. My first instinct is man tr on that one.

   tr only matches single characters, it could uppercase the whole
   name,

  Like I always say, never trust your first instinct ;)

   but it isn't up to capitalising each word. The required command is
   something like:
 for $i in *.ogg do
   mv $i `echo $i|sed s/\([_ ]\)\([a-z]\)/\1\u\2/g`
 done
   The sed command is correct, but I get syntax errors on the 'for',
   maybe someone can jump in and correct me.

  If the filename has spaces in it you need to quote $i in the mv
  command, i.e. 'mv $i ...'.

 True. but I couldn't get it to get that far. It complains that mv is
 unexpected. Something to do with the for syntax that I couldn't find
 the right mystical incantation for.

  If you're interested, here's a comp.unix.shell search on change case:

  http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=enlr=ie=ISO-8859-1q=change+case
 meta=group%3Dcomp.unix.shell

  There I found this script that works for converting to initial caps:

  #!/bin/sed -f
  s/$/aAbBcCdDeEfFgGhHiIjJkKlLmMnNoOpPqQrRsStTuUvVwWxXyYzZ/
  s/^\([a-z]\)\(.*\1\)\(.\)/\3\2\3/

  :more

   s/\([  ]\)\([a-z]\)\(.*\2\)\(.\)/\1\4\3\4/
   t more
   s/aA[b-zB-Z]*$//

 That is a general purpose script for handling text. In this case we can
 be simpler and still get the job done.

   (the stuff in the first pair of brackets after :more is a space and
  a tab.)
  However, it will not work with a file named 11_fun in the sun.ogg
  as 11_fun counts as a word.

 Add a _ to the space and tab and it would work.

2003-08-02 Thread fifner the dragon

 Sorry to hear that, Fifner. Then someone wiser than me (most on
 this list are) will probably step in.

 BTW : is it only gFTP that causes trouble ? What about text
 editors, word processors, browsers etc. ? Judging from the
 subject line on this thread it's likely to be a UTF problem ?
 What happens when you change your encodings in mailers, browsers
 etc. ?

 Kaj Haulrich.

The problems this far are sending it over ftp and compressing it.

When I right click a folder in konqueror and choose to zip it there is a problem with
the non enlish characters. They are replaced by other wierd characters. I don't know
what program is used. When I tar a folder there is no problem. Text editors, word
processors, browsers etc are no problem...

Thank you all,

Can I have linux autodetect the monitor just like it does when I do a fresh install.
Or can I manually set what monitor is used?

Thanks a lot. I think this is getting closer to the solution since it's not only gftp
that has a problem. Zipping a file is also a problem (but not taring them).

In the i18n I couldn't find anything that looked like a character set. What I
have is:

SYSFONTACM=iso15
LC_TELEPHONE=sv_SE
LC_CTYPE=en_US
LANGUAGE=en_US:en
LC_MONETARY=sv_SE

 Hmm... strange. To me it looks like a babylonic confusion of
 languages, Fifner. It seems you prefer Swedish, so maybe that's
 the cause. For example : LANG=en_US will probably not understand
 ä, ö and å. Just for comparison, here's mine :

 LC_CTYPE=da_DK
 LC_TELEPHONE=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_CTYPE=da_DK.UTF-8
 LANGUAGE=da_DK.UTF-8:da
 LC_MONETARY=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_ADDRESS=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_COLLATE=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_NAME=da_DK.UTF-8

 LC_NUMERIC=da_DK.UTF-8

 LC_MEASUREMENT=da_DK.UTF-8
 LANG=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_MESSAGES=da_DK.UTF-8
 LC_IDENTIFICATION=da_DK.UTF-8

 I would try to replace all occurences of *en_US* with*sv_SE*, and
 add UTF-8 or iso-8859-15 to each line. The UTF-8 isn't perfect,
 though, but tolerable. Backup the original file first, just in
 case.

 HTH

 Kaj Haulrich.

I would like to have all the volume, length, weight, and number systems set to
swedish. But the user interface I do NOT want in swedish. Do I have to leave
one at en_US? And in that case, wich one?

And the swedish letters are not enough. I need the icelandish ones as well. Is
there a multi language setting available?

Thanks,

Fifner

 Generally - and I use the term loosely, it will pick up the server-side
 contact list. GENERALLY. I have found, though, that at times, it just
 doesn't want to grab 'em. Double check all your settings, and you should
 be right. If not, you can use KOPETE - that works even better and docks
 in the KDE system tray (that is, if you use KDE) - and is not quite as
 obtrusive and clunky - as well, it does pick up the contact listing from
 the server. My $0.02.

Re: [newbie] connection sharing using static ip

2003-02-13 Thread fifner the dragon
Before I start blocking the 2000 I want to start sharing the connection using static
ip.
When I run the wizard it automaticly configures the sharing to use dhcp. This makes
the old static ip disappear. When I use dhcp on the win machine I can connect to the
internet, but I can no longer ping the old ip of the linux machine.

Can you have some machines connect using dhcp and some machines connecting using
static ip to the same linux-box through the same nic?

Thanks,
Fifner

[newbie] connection sharing using static ip

2003-02-11 Thread fifner the dragon
Hi,

I just configured my connection sharing using drakgw in the mandrake control center.
When it finished I got the message you may now share internet connection with other
computers on your Local Area Network, using atomatic network configuration (DHCP).

Hoow do I set it up to have the internet connection use the static ip numbers from the
other machine? I have only one computer as a network client and it has a dual boot.
Win 98 should be allowed to use the internet, but win2000 should not.

Thanks in advance,
Fifner

Re: [newbie] Case Sensativity on web pages

2002-01-15 Thread Dragon .

Its a pretty simple web page, and converting everything to lowercase would
be fine. How many people do you know specifiy different file names on a web
site by capitalization? Personally, I don't know any. I just wanted to
make sure that people can see the site even if they have a problem typing
uppercase and lowercase when they think it is proper. Its really just a
Directory test but you know some people love to type Test, and that doesn't
work. Thanks for the info. I'll scrounge around apache's site a little
more.

  (probably big) performance hit!

Just for the sake of completeness: Or, it could do what Windows does,
basically convert the entire name to lower (or upper) case, i.e., it
makes no distinction between, for example, TeSt and test. I think there
may be places where this is the appropriate user friendly behavior.

  And if there are two files with the same
  name (except for upper/lower case), then what would Apache do?

If TeSt and test are indeed different files, Apache has a problem, if
TeSt, test, TEST, etc. all refer to a file named test, Apache could
handle it. Of course, we would have fewer file names available.

Hi all,

I installed 8.1 the other day. (3 disc set from cheapbytes). Then use
Interactive Bastille to configure firewalling, internet masquerading and
basic system security.

The problem is that while i can connect to the machine locally
(http://localhost) noone can connect to it over the lan with either
telnet, ssh, ftp or http. These servers are running and I told Bastille
to leave these ports open to the internal network.

On the public network i left ssh and 80 open so i could connect in over
the web from home and so we could host a small company web site. Still
noone can connect to them from the internet BUT i went to www.grc.com
and ran the port probe and it showed the ports as being open. This makes
me wonder if it is a firewall rule that Bastille put in there or is
there something else going on?

Right now the only thing that is working over the lan is internet
masquerading.

Any ideas?

why should Putty or the ssh server on the other box be asking for your

Anyway, I installed Bastille and told it to keep the ssh port and port 22
open, you can specify both name and port. After that it won't connect at
all. Putty mearly closes the window out and tells me it couldn't connect.
Am I missing a file, setting or something that will allow me to connect? I
would really love to work on my home box from work.

When I open Putty, I type in the address and click the dot for ssh. Telnet

doens't respond to ping, telnet, tracert or anything else. My supervisor

did you make sure that you told putty to use ssh protocol?
and you need to turn off telnet since ssh is much more secure.

I use putty quite often and one of my main bugaboos
is forgetting to tell it to use ssh when I go to my
machine.

What are the config files and what needs to be done to allow access? Do I

my only time installing ssh was on a slackware box that didn't have it

Interesting. I have exactly the same problem.
I noticed that someone posted a fix of just copying /root/.tuxracer to
your own home dir, and patching up the permissions... that didn't fix it
for me.

Does anyone else have any solutions for this?

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] cat5 cable again

2001-11-14 Thread Great Dragon

I don't know the wiring schematics or what might be wrong, but I know a
mildly cheap way to fix it and give you expandibility in the future. 5 port
10/100 hubs are pretty cheap and two normal store bought cables would fix
it. If it doesn't, then there is probably something wrong with the nic or
the drivers. I've never made a 100BaseT crossover cable but I have made
10BaseT Crossover and they never failed me. when I make regular patch
cables, 100BaseT works fine, but the hub/Switch does the corssover for me
automatically. Hope this helps and gives you some more Ideas. Its also
handy if you get a hub with an uplink port so if you ever get DSL/Cable
modem going, both computers can access the modem if it only has 1 port.

Re: [newbie] Another Sound problem

Well, sice I didn't get a reply and I had the time, I re-installed Mandrake

workstation, game station, multimedia station, everything. I booted with no
sound, KDE still doens't have sound. The one I'm really trying to get to
work is XMMS. Again, the beep works and XMMS plays the song, bars move up
and the volume is 100% on XMMS and the speakers but nothing comes out. Any

Alright, here is what I have:
a Dell GX1P with a Crystal Audio CS4232 sound card, on the board
It finds the driver but it can't load OPL3. It says YM3812 and OPL-3
driver, OPL3 not detected ff. I run sndconfig and the first test comes back
good, I can hear the wav, the midi gives me an error, errors about
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/OPL3.o.gz: init_module: No
such device
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/OPL3.o.gz: insmod

/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/OPL3.o.gz: insmod synth0
failed

I play the system Beep in Startx but XMMS doens't put out any sound. The
display says its playing. I also don't have a /dev/dsp directory. I'm more
than a little new, read everything I could and am confused as to what I need
to have to get this to work, what I might be missing, and how to go about
fixing it.

Would I need a program or any executable or would it be better to just
modify things directly? I know FTP needs a daemon and the firewall could

ProFTP is installed by default and is great.
IPTables is used by def. in 2.4.x kernels, Ipchains in lower kernels. Both
are
good. At least they have never let me down :)
