Re: [newbie] read/write to and from NTFS/FAT

2001-03-19 Thread Emilio Correa

Hell, Can some one advise me on the best way to allow Mandrake 7.2 to read
and write to my FAT NTFS partitions?

Thank you

Hi, I have LM7.2 and win95 (FAT32) and win2k (NTFS) in the same hard disk,
and I couldn't write to a NTFS from LM7.2. So I had first to write all my
files from LM7.2 to win95 (FAT32), and then these files are easy accesible
from anywhere.
Maybe you must create an extra FAT32 partition (use partition magic) to
exchange files from anywhere to anywhere.
I know that there is some modules that permit you to write to a NTFS from
LM7.2 but I never used them.
Good luck!!

Re: [newbie] Dual Boot Win 2000 / Mandrake 7.2

2001-03-19 Thread Emilio Correa

Hi.

I want to setup a Dual Boot with Win2k and Mandrake 7.2. Is there any
documentation that will walk me through each step? I have very little
experience with Linux so I have no idea how to go about doing this.

Thanks,
Raja

Hi, I recently installed first the win2k in a ntfs file system, then I
installed LM7.2 (expert mode) with GRUB option as the boot manager. After
the installation LM7.2 and GRUB detects automatically the win2k and
included the boot option in GRUB.
If you can install both operative systems for the first time, You should
not to have problems, like me. Try.
Good luck!

thing? How can a VB programmer apply his skills in the Linux world?
Thanks!

Hi, The Kylix is the Delphi (Object Oriented Pascal language) version for

You can find several Kylix info in the following sites:

May be you must probe with the Kdeveloper package (I think) (C++ for linux)

[newbie] win2K and ML7.2

2001-01-17 Thread Emilio Correa

Hi, I wanna know if somebody could install win2K and LM7.2 on the same hard
disk.
I couldn't yet. I made the following:
(30 HB HD)

1- I partition the disc in one FAT32 unit, and leave the rest of the disc free
2- I installed win2K on this partition (FAT32) , without any other extra option
(Is there any option not to install the win2K boot manager?)
3- I installed LM7.2 on the rest of the disc , without any other extra
option than lilo boot manager
4- I thought the lilo must work well and lilo would overwrite the W2K boot
manager, but it didn't happen. My matchine started with a black screen with
the "S" in each part of the screen.

How can I install these Systems in the same hard disc?

I am setting up a Mandrake 7.0 file/print server on an IBM Netfinity(PII
 350, 128 meg, 9.1 Gig SCSI-2) for our office w/ 15 users and was
wondering what the best partition sizes would be? The only major
software that we plan on adding to the Mandrake distro(for now) is some
type of collaboration sofware like Netscape calendar/scheduling. I'll
be doing an expert install(even though I'm not) and only installing the
services that we absolutely need, although I will include KDE and Gnome
because they are so much easier to deal with for file and system
 maintenance.

From reading the archives I guess that I need; swap(128 megs), /boot(20
 megs), /(?), /usr(600?), /usr/local(1,500?), /tmp(50?), /var(100?), and
/home(the rest). The part that I don't get is what exactly gets put into
"/"? Does /boot hold the kernel and / hold all the other software like
Samba, etc? And then any software I add after the installation goes into
 /usr/local?

Please feel free to offer suggestions,
Hi, I suggest the following partitions:

Swap (128 MB )
/(700 MB)
/usr(2000 MB)
/home (7000 MB)

I have no experience in /boot partitions so I can't tell you nothing
about this.
Good luck!!

 and then reboots...it won't boot up into...kde.

it says there's an error...and then asks to login to fix the problem...
then when I insert my root username and password...it says incorrect...

 should I first...do an fdisk/mbr before upgrading...or what...

Hi, I think it is not necesary to do fdisk/mbr before upgrading.
In addition, if you have no data on your hard disk, may be you
should repartition your all hard disk and create only the partition for
windows, install it and then install MDK creating the ext2 partitions in
the free space of the hard disk. If you have already windows
installed, you can clear the ext2 partitions in your hard disk with a
linux fdisk for example (or into the same linux installation process),
then into the blanck space of your hard disk you can install the MDK
and redo all the partitions again, and go on with the full installation.
Good Luck!!

OK, after admitting that I was quite proficient at
installing Red Hat Linux, and after becoming very
disilussioned with Red Hat (i.e., the Linux version of
Microsoft), I purchased the Mandrake distribution v. 7.0.
Now, my hard disk has already been partitioned into 4
separate compartments, as I was running Windows 98 and
Windows NT. However, I wiped my "C" hard disk in order to
uninstall NT. Now, after attempting to install the Mandrake
Linux, I came to a dead end. Admittedly, my hard disk is
still partitoned, in other words, I only wiped the "C"
drive. I attempted to install the Mandrake Linux, and after
re-booting, nothing happened, and the box automatically went
into the Windows 98 O/S. Any ideas, suggestions, etc.?
What do I need to do to install the Mandrake Linux O/S? Any
 help would be accepted.
 Regards,
 Bob

Hi, may be you should reinstall MDK and when you are configuring
the partitions, in the installation, try to delete them and rebuild them
paying attention on it, then when the installation prompt you where to
save lilo, choose MBR, and I think this may help, I hope so!!
Good luck!!

 Try the multi-headed monster approach:
1 Surf the net for every Linux reference you can find, check it out.
2 Look up the closest LUG (linux user group) in your area, contact 'em.
3 Check with your local computer stores and local ISP's for linux contacts
4 Visit good bookstores like Barnes Nobles, Borders, or whoever is in

5 Suck up to some willing linux geek in your area, make him/her feel

Re: [newbie] /, /usr, and /opt?

2000-03-06 Thread Emilio Correa

Hi, I will tell you how I create my partitions and thats ok for me:
My main partition (hda) has about 3 GB, and then in the installation I
created:
/ (500 MB) (here is important to give space for /temp )
/usr (2 GB)
/swap (128 MB) (depending of your RAM memory)
/local (370 MB) (personal files of users)

I read that all the soft you will install should be in /usr/local
You can change the size of any partition with "Partition Magic"
without reinstalling all! (I could do it ) If you can't shout me.
good luck

Subject:[newbie] /, /usr, and /opt?

Are there any figures available on how much space is taken up in every
file system in the default installation? What I mean by that is, are there
any numbers for how big the /, the /usr, the /etc, the /opt, the /var etc.
partitions absolutely have to be in order to accomodate a full installation,
 including everything?

Given the advice I have received this far, I am thinking that perhaps I
should make a 1 Gb partition for /, another 1 Gb partition for /opt, and a
third 1 Gb partition for /usr. Is this a good idea?

Another alternative is of course to make separate /etc, /var, /opt,
/usr, /, and so on, for every file system? I'd feel pretty silly if I had
made one partition too small and eventually had to reformat and reinstall
the entire system, just because one of the partitions turned out to be too
small. That is why I want to do this right from the beginning. Which of
 the alternatives is best?

Some of the applications I plan to install I guess will end up in /usr.
I thought this was where all third-party software was installed, but
apparently some will end up in /opt? Is this true? In that case perhaps I
should only make a separate /opt, instead of a separate /usr?

I am grateful for all help.

Re: [newbie] change back to kde?

2000-03-06 Thread Emilio Correa

I think you refer to the command kde in a new virtual console or
may be you should change the windows manager with the switch
tool, i think in configuration or sistem options. Look for it.
Note that you can run for example kde in one console and gnome in
another one!! (if it help you)
Good luck!!

no gui command for this on the desktop. What's the command I have to issue
 to do this?
Gnome is SOOO slow in Mandrake 7.0 (at least the xterm)

According to the virus description someone already posted...the virus sends
it's self using the infected persons address book...so it is unlikely this
person knew he was infected...and the virus posted its self to the list...and
many of his address book contacts. At least he warned the mail list when he
 discovered what had happened.
 That aside...here's my Linux content.
I have a 13 GB drive with a seprate /home partition, where I have stored the
7.02 d/l (cable download and NO CD burner..:( )to upgrade my version from 6.0
to 7.02, what procedure would I use to install from HD (/home). For whatever
reason my floppy is initialized during boot up, but fails to mount. I have
tried to boot from ANY (DOS, Win9x, Linux) floppy but no go...my system will
support CD boot though. Is it possible to boot from 6.0 CD and install 7.02
 from HD?
 TIA

I downloaded Word Perfect yesterday. It unpacked normally. When I tried to
run the file called 'Runme' it said there was nothing to do. I ended up doing
a manual install (running install.wp). I thought it installed everything ok,
but the file xwp was not installed. I cannot run Word Perfect without it.

Was it not installed, or will it just not run? Look in
/usr/local/WordPerfect/wpbin and see if it's there. If it is, then get in
that directory in a terminal window and execute "./wpbin". If it works,
then you can work out the issue of how to execute it normally,
depending on the window manager you're using.

If it's not there, then you really do have a bad install and I don't have a ready
fix in mind.

Re: [newbie] Install failure for LM 6.5

2000-02-29 Thread Emilio Correa

Hello, i will try to help you. I think the main problem is on the hard
disk partition, may be you have made a wrong type of partition.
For example the best way to check it is with the fdisk utility that you
must have with your MSDOS (for example). First you have to check
if the partition in which you are going to install linux is a primary
partition, otherwise you can't install it on an extended one. But in my
opinion, the best way to install it, is to take a hard disk with only one
(1) primary Dos partition on it with for example the windows system
installed on it. Then when you run the installation program of
Mandrake 7.0 (for example) you can add to the rest of the empty
hard disk the others/other partitions/partitions and setup all the
mount points on them, including the swap partition. I prefer to create
the following: / , /usr, /home , /swap but it is not necesary to
separate and in this moment (not before the installation). If you wan't
you can chosse only the root and the swap one in order to be
simple. All this procedure is be factible to make with the "Druid"
program, that you can choose in the begining of the Mandrake 7.0
installation.
I expect the best for you

Subject:[newbie] Install failure for LM 6.5

I'm trying to install LM 6.5 on a machine with abt 9GB hd, 4GB partitioned
with PM 5 for Linux with swap partition created. It fails to install
 everytime I try.
It's almost immediately during the install process. I setup the partitions,
put in the CD, and reboot the system. My CD is set to automatically
interrupt the bootup process (primary drive), so it immediately goes to the
install screen. Regardless as to whether I choose expert or regular
install, it proceeds normally. First, it asks the standard "what are you
using" questions: language, keyboard layout, etc. Asks for the Install vs.
Upgrade question. I choose install. Asks if the data is on the CD or Hard
Drive. On the CD. Asks if I have any SCSI adaptors. No. Says it will
scan/setup the hard drive for installation, gives the option of using Disk
Druid or Fdisk. Both Disk Druid and Fdisk give the same response: no hard
drive detected, check your hardware configuration. I can get to the menu
and setup everything else, but it won't detect the hard drive to complete
the actual installation. Have to ctrl-alt-delete to get out eject
 the disk.
 Any thoughts out there?
 Thanks in advance...
 Ken in Alaska
