[newbie] Trouble with Update_source
Good Afternoon! Just installed MDK 10-Community. Running on the 2.4 kernel. Every time I try to add update source with the MCC gui, I get the following error message, regardless which site I choose: === Unable to add medium, errors reported: ...retrieving failed: Curl failed: exited with 9 or signal 0 retrieval of source hdlist(or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium update_source problem reading synthesis file of medium update_source === Same thing happens when I try it with the 2.6 kernel. I tried using the URL's given on the Club web page with URPMI from a command line and get the same results. My MDK 9.2 machine seems to work OK. What's up?? Are all the servers hosed? or is it my machine? Is there a fix? Thanks Harv Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] NVIDIA sound problem
Hi Y'all may have beat this one into submission in the past ... but I just got this new machine. ASUS A7N8X-VM motherboard with integrated NVIDIA nforce2 IGP and MCP chipsets. Nothing seemed to work after the initial MDK 9.2 install. I disabled the onboard LAN adapter in BIOS and temporarily installed an old 3COM NIC. On the reboot, harddrake picked that up and configured it. At least I got a net connection. With urpmi I downloaded and installed the following: NVIDIA_GLX_4496-2.2.92mdk NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-4496-2.2.92 NVIDIA_nforce-2.4.22.21mdk-1.0-02663 Now, the onboard LAN adapter is working nicely (removed the 3COM NIC). I get the NVIDIA splash screen which indicates that the graphics adapter is running with drivers it likes best (I hope). With MCC, I tried to add the nvaudio drivers to the soundcard. Sound functions still seem to be screwed up. On boot up, I get this message: modprobe: can't locate module nvaudio sound: loading sound module (nvaudio) failed. My original (before all the downloads, etc) '/etc/modules.conf' file looked like this: alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss alias eth0 3c59x probeall usb-interface usb-ohci ehci-hcd probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi With the above configuration, I DID get the KDE start-up rumble sound. However, my microphone and line-in inputs didn't work. My '/etc/modules.conf' now looks like this: alias sound-slot-0 nvaudio above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss alias eth0 nvnet probeall usb-interface usb-ohci ehci-hcd probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi KDE not longer plays it start-up rumble ('can't find /dev/dsp'). The inputs still don't work. How do I get system to find the correct nvaudio drivers? Its getting close to that time of year again. Anybody found a tax package (US) that runs on Linux? WINE/Crossover wouldn't run last years versions. I doubt they'll be able to handle this years stuff. [newbie] MDK 9.2/Mozilla 1.5/Realplayer/XMMS
I've installed 9.2 and its up and running. I removed Mozilla 1.4 and replaced it with Mozilla 1.5. All my bookmarks are still there. Many of those bookmarks are audio URLs ... .ram, .ra, .slps, etc. Mozilla 1.3/1.4 used to pass them directly to their respective helper aps ... Realplayer, XMMS, etc. Mozilla 1.5 opens a BLANK page with the bookmarked URL in the location bar (or the Download mgr) and only then passes the URL to the helper ap. It uses the download mag for stuff that will ultimately be processed by XMMS. Is there anyway to cure Mozilla 1.5 of this annoying habit? [newbie] MDK9.2/Gnomemeeting/xawtv/stream server
Mandrake 9.2 is installed and running well. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it recognized my 3Com/Homeconnect Web cameras without even asking for a config file. XAWTV also uses them without a problem. Gnomemeeting configured itself to use them. Great! Is there anyway to set up a streaming webcam server? I found some short Howto's for a Debian system, but they were pretty cryptic for me (I'll need some pretty basic coaching on this one). Contacted Telewest BlueYonder, and the technician turned up today, and found he could not install the modem because there is no Windows machine in the house. He could not install the hardware and leave it without it being configured and presumably talking to base. All he would do is load a CD into Windows, if it were available, and let it run. His supervisor gave him some story about having to run the Windows setup before the modem could be used. I am so completely ignorant about networking that I could not even begin to suggest how we might go about experimenting with it to try and get the modem recognised and the connection working. All I could give the poor lad was the MAC address of eth0 and all he knew was that the connection needed to be configured under DHCP. Can anybody tell me just what information would be required for a simple standalone setup? And is it true that the cable modem can only be initialized by proprietary software? I have perused various HOWTOs without seeing exactly what kind of information is needed. IP addresses of course. Presumably I could badger Telewest to give me those in written form, but what else? The dialup connection was simple to configure because Demon provided all the relevant parameters. I had the same sort of arguement with CenturyTel. My solution was to buy a small D-Link DI-604 router (about $20). The router fights the battle with their modem, DHCP/DNS servers, etc. (It even includes its own littlde firewall, so now, I get an extra Linux box for FREE. ) I plug all my Linux machines, Windows machines (via another little router) and security cameras into the D-Link router. or should we have the right to own what we create just like a person that creates a sculpture or paints a picture etc... Unfortunately, the creator/author of a work is seldom the person to reap the greatest benefit from his creativity/creation. Rather, the distributor of the creative work usually reaps an undue reward ... RIAA, auction houses, theaters, movie producers, publishers, etc., are examples. I could never understand why recording artists did NOT immediately latch on to some nickle-a-pop revision napster, etc. and make it their own. If I spend alot of time working on a script, i reserve the right to charge for it if I want to.. after all, I spend the hours and hours writing it. Also, if 1000's of people start handing a script I wrote that is not free to all their mates.. I am just a small guy, I can't afford to do anything about it. So they would all get away with it.. I know you probably don't care.. because you didn't spend days working on it.. but having something I worked so hard on totally devalued makes me very angry.. If I give it away for free like I normally do, thats fine, it was my choice.. but to have you decide its information and just hand it out is wrong and since I can't afford to go after anyone for it, they would all get away with it if there were not laws protecting me. Re: [newbie] Can't access my bank account!
My bank used to have the same disclaimer ... IE only. All that happened was that the page did not display as THEY intended in my Galeon browser. All the parts of their presentation were there, just spread around in a more or less haphazard manner ... something to do with the way ActiveX does HTML tables, I think. When I found the login input form/box and used it, all the stuff operated as it should. Everything other than the initial index page displayed just like it used to when using IE. I complained to the bank that not everyone in the world uses IE and that there are many other browsers around ... and that in their own best interests, their pages should display equally well in any browser. That means sticking to the HTML standards ... not just programming for ActiveX and IE. In the last few weeks, they've made changes. What used to be done with ActiveX is now done with Java applets and Shockwave/Flash presentations (you even have an option to skip them if you like, and get to the meat of the issue.) When you complain to your bank, you might also mention that the combination of IE, WORD, Outlook, and ActiveX, is known as VTP ... the Virus Transport Protocol. Re: [newbie] Backup to CD-R/RW
I downloaded the eval version ... but it made me hunt up a WIN98 machine with a CD burner, so I could run the .exe download ... just to burn the ISO for me! All that, so that I could try out a linux based program to back up a linux only machine (not a dual boot system). Seems like the long run-around-end to get to the goal. After all that, it wanted to make a compressed copy of my hda1 partition on hda6. Which copy, I would then have to burn to CD, manually. This is getting a little silly. Thanks for all the help and suggestions ... but I don't have time to play like this. I'm opting for the old machine with big HD to do a network backup of all the other disks. I guess the question will then be, how long do I have to sleep at night so the backups can complete. It basically works like Ghost and makes an image of the entire drive or individual partitions. It will create the image on bootable CD and CD/RW media, too. It all seems to work. A little poking even got it to find my old printer and my old scanner. My new camera is another matter, but I'll not quibble. Problems: 1. How does one get the aRTs sound server and Realplayer to live together in the same room? Realplayer won't play until I shut down the aRTs server. Then, Realplayer coughs out the BBC and Radio Netherlands quite nicely. Except ... 2. Everytime I click an audio link in a browser window (doesn't seem to matter which one I use ... Konqueror, Galeon, Netscape, Mozilla, or Opera) the browser opens a blank window with the audio URL (*.ram) in the location bar and only then passes the URL to the Realaudio AP. Why this extra blank window? 3. Why does KDE insist that Konqueror must be my default browser? I really like Galeon browser better and would prefer that it was the default for both web, and file browsing, and email calls. Is there anyway to set this up? Nahhh... I don't wanna use Gnome on the desk top ... I like the rest of KDE better ... Just the browser is sorta sucky. 4. If I try to change my video settings using the Mandrake control panel, it hangs the whole system. However, if I run XFdrake from a command line (as root) everything goes hunky-dori. 5.
