Yes if you have not figured that out you have to be root to write to things
in the /etc dir. So you would have to run swat as root.

As for another good source for info. Have you hit the ORiely book website
yet. Their using Samba book is also available for download in HTML or PDF
format.

Good luck.. I have done the same.

Because you need to tell the system what to use to execute the commands
contained in the file. Check /etc/rc.d/rc.local and
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit and you'll find the same at the top of them.
Probably the same in the scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d/.

here is a point Steve.. why not just add the line at the end of the
rc.local script.. thats what I did with my setserial command..

Rather than creating a new script??

I have seen that there is two ICQ clients out for Linux.

One is Kicq for KDE

and another is for GNOME.

I like to use KDE as my Desktop.. but I notice that the KICQ project is
still Alpha and is not getting a lot of support.

The one for GNOME is STABLE and looks to be the better of the two to use.

ANyone tried running the GNOME ICQ on a KDE desktop? ANyone tried both of

ANyone running KICQ and find that it works pretty well and not to worry

Hey people.. I am running an AMD K6ii 350 with 64meg ram.

I am running both win98 and Mandrake 6.0(venus)

I am getting a 699 rating on this computer. Would memory be my best
investment for this machine? I only have 1 64meg chip in it right now.. so
I could go and put a 128 and bring me up to 192meg? is that the best idea??

The machine runs fine otherwise. - Anyway to get a theme for KDE that will
do a machine busy cursor? you know so when you click on an Icon you know

Re: [newbie] failing to unmount

1999-08-23 Thread James Schofield

If you go to the updates page of the Mandrake site it has a blurb on this bug.

Everyone should be updating their kernel to 2.2.9-27 anyway because of a
security bug... but this as well as the initscripts is what is needed to
fix the unmount bug..

I have that bug as well.. I have updated initscripts.. I need to download
and update the kernel now.. OH NO!! LOL!! hopefully I wont bugger up my system

For those that have been following my saga... I now have a working modem
and sound card.. YE HA! I have mounted both my windoze partitions on Linux
to get access to all my pics and other files.

So the sun is a little brighter on my mandrake 6.0 install.

1999-08-23 Thread James Schofield

Don't know if the kernel upgrade specifically address anything to do with
the unmounting bug (i have my doubts as all i updated were the init scripts
and then the problem went away), but it's certainly not true to say everyone
should upgrade the kernel because of the security bug.

I don't have a modem in my PC - i have a laptop running W98 for work, and
use that instead. Therefore, as the Linux box is never connected to anyone
except itself, this means no security threat !!

True.. if your not using the linux box to connect to ANYTHING then there is
nothing to worry about security wise..

Okay, i haven't read the updates page - but didn't the unmount problem go
away after just upgrading the initscripts ??

Actually I have not shut it down since I have updated Martin.. LOL! So I
dont know yet. ;o)

[newbie] one more newbie question.

1999-08-20 Thread James Schofield

I have a question.

If I get a book with a CD rom in.. say 1.3 of Open linux or 5.0 or 5.1 of
Redhat.

Is it not worth my while to get that up and running at all??

If all I am using the machine for it personal use .. internet etc.. with
these distros work fine for what a personal user needs??

So is the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.2 like win 95 to 98.. they both work.. just
one will work better?? or does 2.0 have problems that I will find??

Re: [newbie] Does Linux use the Bios for Harddrives?

1999-08-20 Thread James Schofield

ok, I have one more question along this thread.

I have a 520 meg harddrive on my NEC laptop..

I am going to run Slackware 4 on it.. because I can do a Floppy install
with it.
Can you do a FTP install of Mandrake??

Anyway.. how do you think I should partition my harddrive for a basic X
internet laptop.. nothing too complicated.. just web email and IRC..

I will add whatever I can fit into it... so give me an idea?

Should I just go with Swap and /

or Swap / /boot /usr /home? and how much space out of 520 should I go?

I am getting a 1.4 gig for the laptop.. so I will be using that in future
for Linux I think.

Re: [newbie] Does Linux use the Bios for Harddrives?

1999-08-17 Thread James Schofield

ok, so I want to install Mandrake on this computer. As it stands now I am
having a very hard time getting support from NEC because the machine is so
old. They did come out with a bios that would autoconfig a drive and also
could do LBA mode. But I have had no luck flashing this machine with it.
They say it might not work because its for European machines. But I own
another slower laptop that HAS been upgraded to this bios. HO HUM..

ANyway.. what your saying is.. let the bios dectect it as whatever it
wants.. then when I boot from the /boot partition which will be inside that
"fake" drive it will then see the true size of the drive??

I am not sure on this.. as I have had problems with it finding incompatable
drive sizes before (posted about a week ago)

H

 /boot 15 megs
 / 1000 megs
 /home bal
 swap128

Extrapolate this for the size drive you have. A quick note on swap
space: Any
swap space above 128 megs is a waste. Linux will not use more than 128
megs per
mounted swap partition. If you need more swap space, make 2 swap
partitions at
 128 megs.

and then make another partition for
"/" that takes up a large chunk (if not all) of the rest of the drive
space.
That should allow the system to boot with a hard drive larger than the
  system recognizes...

[newbie] Mach64 XF86 server... display resolution?

Ok, installed Mandrake 6.0

I would like to have several resolutions available to me in X. So when I do
my video and Monitor setup I decide not to accept the default resolution
found and I pick three from the 24bit list. 800 x 600 1024 x 768 and 1248 x
1024 (is that last one right?) anyway...

When I get into X.. no difference what windows manager I use.. KDE or Gnome
etc... It fits the largest resolution to my monitor and the others it makes
them Larger icons etc.. in a vitural screen which extends past the edge of
the real screen.. I HATE THAT..

I have looked and looked but so far I have not found a way to turn this
virtural screen off.. I dont want to pan off the edge of my screen how do I
stop it??

Some have suggested I play with minicom first to get the modem working
there.. then when I have.. I can get back into Kppp and set it up.

Re: [newbie] Linux Not for Average Users (Was: Linux for home consumers?)

1999-08-16 Thread James Schofield

Exactly, and who needs an ultra powerful microwave to nuke a little tv
dinner?
The average user needs little more than entertainment and an office suit with
little or no time wasted in learning how it works. For this, they are
willing
to pay big bucks.

My reply to this would be like buying a NEW Car from the DEALER rather than
a HOT ROD from a Mechanic.

The Average user wants all the Warrenty and assurances - reliable service,
documentation and FULL service support that a Microsoft can and will supply.

If you want to own a HOTROD you have to be willing to do the work yourself
to try and get the special parts etc.. from all the various venders that
will sell it. Your not going to find it all under one roof. Welcome to Linux.

I would say that Linux is growning because of its growing user
friendlyness.. more to compete with the Windows NT platform than anything.
And really we are still talking about an OS thats primary focus is network
connectivity.. not games or office suites.

[newbie] Does Linux use the Bios for Harddrives?

1999-08-16 Thread James Schofield

I have a question.

Does Linux use the BIOS to get harddrive specifications??

I own an older 486/75 NEC Versa Laptop that I would like to use as a Linux
machine.

I have only a maximum of 540meg HD right now.. so because I wanted to run
Linux I was thinking of Upgrading the HD.. to a GIG or over.. BUT!!!

The bios is old.. and only allows me to go up to 1 gig exactly in size..
I could use a Disk manager .. but this is only useful for DOS partitions is
it not?

So the point is.. I want to use a 1 GIG + drive in a machine that does not
have a bios that can support it. HOW WILL LINUX HANDLE IT??

Re: [newbie] First time linux user in DIRE need of help!

1999-08-13 Thread James Schofield

Will, RE-INSTALL!!

First load win98 and go to the command prompt only

then type fdisk /mbr

That will clear the LILO out of your system ( Unless you really dont care
about your win98 or have it all backed up I would boot from a floppy.)

Then go through the process of re-installing. This will allow you to do
everything over.. since you already have figured out some of the problems
you have.

The swap partition does not have to be that large Will.. 64meg is lots! If
you have over 64meg in the machine you will not be using your swap
partition much anyway.. thats why it sets a max at 133meg.. you will never
need more.

As for X and the monitor etc.. it is most likely your Video card selection
that is the problem not the monitor. try and find out your chipset type. As
for the monitor you can choose to install it as a 72mhz 1024 x 768 monitor
to start out with.. your monitor can do that NO PROBLEMS.. once you have X
up and running you can modify your configuration while you are running.

Hope this helps..

[newbie] LaptopDocking Station Install Problems

1999-08-08 Thread James Schofield

I need a real NUT cracked on this laptop install.

What happens when Linux detects your drive.. but it has an invalid geometry
according to linux?

Also what do you do with Linux when you have an older bios that needs a
Diskwizard or simular to recognize the full drive??

Mine detects my first 540 drive no problem as hda

Dectects my second 1 gig as 535 63 63 and says.. Invalid geometry 63
heads??? and then states hdb invalid

It then goes to hdc and logs in a VALID configuration for the hdb 1gig drive.

THis gets me threw the install no problem.. but the system will not run on it.

I get it crapping out every time I get to Optimizing Drives hdb [Failed]

Then hdc - it locks up!!! EVERY TIME.
