[newbie] Remote Install
Greetings, I'm curious if anyone knows how to do a remote install to a workstation from a server. I have several workstations that do not have cd-rom drives only a 3.5 floppy drive. As always thanks for your help. Jeff begin:vcard n:; x-mozilla-html:TRUE adr:;; version:2.1 note;quoted-printable:Good Things Happen To Those That Are Patient! =3B) x-mozilla-cpt:;16608 end:vcard
[newbie] [Fwd: Remote Printing Problem]
I am having difficulty getting remote printing to work, I have a very good "Red Hat-Installation and Configuration" handbook and have followed the instuctions completely. But I get the error message 'print job has been qued' but cannot start dameon, connection refused, then it crashes my editor. I can connect to the server through Gftp from the same client, but I cannot connect to the client from the Server? I can use Telenet to connect from both directions, I know it is a simple networking problem, but I have gone over these settings many times and cannot resolve it. I can 'ping' from both directions - ok -. System: 7970 Compaq, 700Mhz AMD, 128 ram, ver. 7.1(helium) Server install. As always, Thanks for your assistance. Jeff

[newbie] Domain not Bound?
Hello all, perhaps someone could help with this small problem: I recently made some changes to networking configuration and now when I reboot, start Netscape or use "SU" in X Term. I get a message saying YPBINDProc_DOMAIN: Domain not boundI feel like I have changed back all my previous adjustments but I still get the same Warning. My 'LAN' shows no glitches in performance. Any advice is appreciated. I'm running 7.1(Helium) on a Compaq 7970,700 MHz athlon, 128MB, Server Custom Install. Thanks Jeff begin:vcard n:Morse;Jeffrey x-mozilla-html:TRUE adr:;; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] note;quoted-printable:Good things come to those who wait :)=0D=0A=0D=0A Linux / Java=0D=0ASeries60 x-mozilla-cpt:;-26112 fn:Jeffrey Morse end:vcard

I had to format it twice because all I got when I rebooted was zero's and one's filling up the screen. I tried to boot off of the disk and then to the CD but I can not get pass the disk they gave me. I tried to make my own disk as the instruction told me but the program that makes the disk did not work, give me an error not sure what just now. I have gave up trying sometime ago but now I find I still would love to have it on my machine. It has to be duel boot because I need to run WIn/98 as well. They say not to boot right to the disk (which I can do), I am not sure why but maybe I should try that. I friend told me that my hard drive was to big but I could not understand that being the problem. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks for you time and effort in the matter for me Regards Stephen L I used System System Commander 2000 to allow for my dual boot on my Compaq 7970; I have a 40 gig HD, all works great, I suggest you read the book complete before running the installation of SC2000. begin:vcard n:Morse;Jeffrey x-mozilla-html:FALSE adr:;; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] note:Good things come to those who wait :) x-mozilla-cpt:;0 fn:Jeffrey Morse end:vcard
Re: [newbie] 7.1 Upgrade MBR of HDA
Torrey Peacock wrote: I have had the exact same situation. I have two hard disks, with Windows on hda, and Linux on hdc. Normally, I install LILO to the MBR of hda. After installing Mandrake 7.1, I could boot into Linux through GRUB, but Windows was inaccessible. I could boot DOS with a floppy disk, but the C: drive was no longer readable from DOS. Using System Commander, I was able to restore the Windows boot record, but System Commander can't do anything with GRUB (it recognizes LILO just fine). Quite a mess. I can boot Windows normally again, but have to use a boot floppy for Linux. I tried resetting GRUB, and also using LILO, but it just trashes the boot record, and I have to restore with System Commander once again. Whatever GRUB does is apparently not so easy to undo, and there is no way I can find to uninstall it. I have *never* had these problems with any other distribution, including Mandrake 7.0 Seems rather irresponsible of Mandrake to use alpha software for its default boot loader, but that's what they did. Sure doesn't seem ready for prime time to me. Torrey At 06:48 PM 7/22/00 -0400, Harry Flaxman wrote: >Well, here's another problem I ran into upgrading to 7.1. I had the exact same problem, I was running Linux7.0/Win on a second box and decided to format and run only 7.1. After doing so my daughter missed windoze(her computer by the way)so I tried to reinstall win95 off of a restore disk, I had to use System Commander to help resize my partition but it still would not work. Everytime after the initial install of Win95 and it rebooted to update the new configuration I got a prompt from Grub> not allowing me to access drive c: Currently I run only 7.1 on this machine but installed a network card to access my Win98 partition on my box. If you find the fix to undo what Grub did to my MBR, I would be very interested. --ooO---OO---Ooo-- (_) Linux / Java Rule :>) Series60 begin:vcard n:Morse;Jeffrey x-mozilla-html:FALSE adr:;; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] note:Good things come to those who wait :) x-mozilla-cpt:;0 fn:Jeffrey Morse end:vcard
[newbie] Gaim
Hello all, perhaps someone can can me with this small problem, I am trying to configure 'gaim' but when I type in my user name and password it locks up. If I tell it to register, I am whisked away to Aol's homepage and see nothing relating to Linux or 'Gaim'. Thanks for any assistance on this, Jeff :)
[newbie] Reload Browser continuous
Hello, hopefully someone here can help me with this, once connected to the web and I start running netscape or any mail or nntp program it works great for about the first 1-2 minutes and then it stops downloading or uploading completely (stalled) and I have to reload the browser or most of the time disconnect and reconnect to the isp, it may take 10 minutes to view 3-4 different web pages but again, it works fine at first and then comes to a screaching halt. Thanking all for your support, most of my questions have been answered just by reading the scripts... I'm running 7.0 (air) , speed, memory and storage are not a factor with this box. Thanks, Jeff
[newbie] Connected or not Connected?
Hello, all! maybe someone out there can help me with my problem, I recently installed an external modem to gain access to the internet with Linux, all that went great, I have configured kppp and Usernet to get connected, here's where my problem starts: I can connect with Kppp just fine (it appears that I'm connected, the detail of my bar graph on Kppp shows I'm connected with small spikes in the beginning and then goes flat-line until I launch a browser and then I get several spikes of incoming and outgoing data) the reason I have my doubts is because everytime I launch Netscape, Kfm, Gftp or anything that needs to gain access to the web they lock up ( Netscape ) and then they say that the Url that I am trying to connect with is unavailable or cannot be reached. It's like I'm connected to my isp but everything stops there. When I use "usernet" to connect I get connected but then get booted off with in 2 seconds and it will continue trying to get on until I reboot. This is driving me bonkers, why can't any of the web browers get connected? Any help on these 2 problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff
[newbie] CD RW / Dvd
After I installed Linux-Mandrake 7.0 for the ump-teinth time trying to figure this out, maybe someone out there can help me, Linux is not recognizing my Cd writer, it says that it is not a valid block device when I try to mount it, my system is less than 6 months old, Compaq 7970, does this mean that I need to get the drivers for it and if so where would I find these drivers? It recognizes my Cd/Dvd drive fine(by the way any suggestions for an application I can install to watch my Dvd's , "Nist" does not seem to work at all?) Thanks For your suggestions in advance, Jeff Eric MC DECLERCK wrote: rharvey wrote: If I re- install and I want to install everything... what partitions do I need and how much space does each of them need?
