RE: [newbie] Proview LCD Monitors - Feedback?

2002-02-22 Thread Johnson, David

I don't have any information on this brand specifically, but I can give you
some things to look for in an LCD monitor if you need help there:

There are 3 things that one should look for in a desktop LCD monitor:

1) Contrast ratio - Should be at least 350:1. 400:1 or better is
preferable
2) Brightness - Don't go below 250 nits. 300 or better is preferable
3) Response time - This is especially important if you're going to be
gaming or watching movies. Should be around 25ms or so.

This is information I've gathered recently as I've been trying to find a
decent, cheap (relatively speaking) 17+ monitor to replace the 15 LCD
panel I have now. I saw a Sylvania at Costco the other day that was
inexpensive and had 400:1 contrast ratio with 350 nits brightness, but a
slow 45ms response time. It would have been miserable for gaming.

If I'm off base here, someone please correct me as I'm not the ultimate
knowledge source on LCD screens...:-)

RE: [newbie] Kernel update question [How to]

2002-01-14 Thread Johnson, David

Running the RPM -ivh did add the new kernel's boot info to the bottom of
lilo.conf, and it included the read-only directive. If/when I decide the
move solely to the new kernel and nix the old kernel, should I remove this
directive? The default boot info does not include this. What does it mean?

After installing your kernel with
# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.x-xmdk.i586.rpm
look in /boot where your new vmlinuz/images will have been installed.
Sometimes the new kernel installation adds the new kernel vmlinuz (boot
image) to /etc/lilo.conf for you (usually at the bottom of the file). If
it has not already been added for you, add it yourself. For example when
I installed a new kernel (2.4.16.3mdk-1-1mdkenterprise) I added:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.16.3mdk-1-1mdkenterprise
label=24163-1-1mdkent
root=/dev/hda5
read-only
optional
vga=normal
append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=nomount mem=1152M

You can use similar parameters to your existing kernel listing in the
lilo.conf file. The label can be anything you like so that you can
identify it when lilo gives you the option at boot. If you want to make
the new kernel your default to boot, just change the default= (near the
top of the file) to your new kernel label.

After saving the file, you must run lilo for changes to take effect. In a
terminal as root:
# lilo or # /sbin/lilo

Then reboot and enjoy!

With the kernel you have to reboot for it to take effect.
Try this at the command line type in : uname -a
You'll see the current kernel that your using.

Before you do reboot. Make sure you have a bootdisk and you have read the
steps I had to take. Because once you reboot, your not going anywhere until

yeah, its a good point, but its an easy answer..

download your kernel rpm

install it with rpm -ivh kernel.x.x.x.rpm
(the I stands for install, as opposed to upgrade.)

then get your new kernel headers, and upgrade them.
rpm -Uvh kernel-headers.x.x.x.rpm

The U being indicative of upgrade.

That will work just wonderfully,

and if for some reason, the install fails, it won't clag your install
because the old kernel is still there to get you up and running again.

once you know the new one works, you can remove the old with :

rpm -e kernel.old.x.x

I have been doing this for ages and its never failed. (ie, I have never
toasted my old kernel installing the new one.)

[newbie] Some Windows hang-ons...

2001-11-13 Thread Johnson, David

Folks,

I'd love to ditch Windows completely, but there is still some good software
that I hang on to that I think is only available for Windows. Somebody
prove me wrong:

Outlook with Exchange server - I run an Exchange server at the house and
want to maintain the Outlook functionality. Is there Linux software to
mimic this?

MS Money - I have grown to love this software over the years for keeping
track of my finances. Is there comparable software out there for Linux?

Turbo Tax - I discovered this gem last year and love the ease with which it
helps me do my taxes every year. Is there tax prep software out there?

Finally, Games - I do quite a bit of LAN gaming with my friends who run
Windows. I know that things like Quake 3 are around, but what about others
like Half-life, Diablo II, etc. Is there anywhere near the selection of
first rate games for Linux as for Windows?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know about the UL specifications, but CAT5 is not rated at
1,000mbps. It may work, but there will be no guarantee. CAT5 is designed
to be rock-solid at up to 100mbps. If you want 1000baseT, you'll need to
bump up to CAT5e or CAT6 (the latter is VERY expensive) otherwise, you take
your chances.

So I download the libGConf 1.0.4 rpm and when I install it, I get:

 [root@pengo packages]# rpm -i libGConf1-1.0.4-2mdk.i586.rpm
 error: failed dependencies:
 GConf = 1.0.4 is needed by libGConf1-1.0.4-2mdk

Is this my fault for trying to install from the 8.1 RPM's or should I be
 able to do this?

Sometimes you need to assume that you are more intelligent than RPM ;-)

In this case, you can use the --nodeps option to tell RPM to ignore
dependencies. I don't recommend using it when it's not absolutely
necessary, but in this case I think it is.

Use the --nodeps option to install libGConf first (and also install
libdb-3.2, preferably without using the nodeps option unless necessary).
Something like this:
  #rpm -U --nodeps libGConf1-1.0.4-2mdk.i586.rpm

Notice also, that I used option -U rather than -i. This way, you ensure
that if such a package already exists on your system (unlikely, but
possible), you will Upgrade it properly. And if no package exists, then
RPM is smart enough to treat the 'U' as an 'i'. I also like to add options
'vh' ('-Uvh') as well, so I get verbose messages from RPM, and I see hash
marks (a text-based progress bar) during the upgrade/install.

- From there, GConf should be able to install without the nodeps option, and

so on.

[newbie] Postfix config problem?

2001-10-18 Thread Johnson, David

Ok, so I'm starting to get the hang of this Linux thing. I'm now running
Postfix to act as my SMTP service to get e-mail out from my machine. I do
this because I'm using the POP3 account from my home DSL provider and they
don't allow relaying from machines not on there network for SMTP traffic.

Anyway, most mail traffic outbound looks pretty normal, but the headers do
include tags with the hostname of the machine (pengo.xxx.com), which is not
available in any DNS in the world.

I have configured my address and reply-to fields in KMail properly, but
Postfix is still attaching the machine's host name to all of the outbound
messages. This is causing a problem when I try to subscribe to the
snort-users mailing list as the majordomo at sourceforge keeps trying to
relay to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and kicking my messages back because it can't
reach that e-mail address. Is there some configuration that I must do to
Postfix/sendmail to get an actual routable address to show up there?

Thanks for any help.

RE: [newbie] Changing window managers

2001-10-18 Thread Johnson, David

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm running 8.0

Which brings up another question. Since installing 8.0, something has gone
wrong with my computer such that I now cannot use the CD-ROM! I have tried
a new unit. I have tried moving the CD-ROM from the secondary IDE channel
to the primary. I have tried making it the master, slave, etc., nothing
works.

Anyway, I'm not trying to solve my CD-ROM issue any more as I think it's
more of a motherboard issue or something, but I would still love to upgrade
to LM8.1.

How can I do this? I know there's a way to do an FTP installation. Can you
tell me how to initiate this?

Thanks for the advice!

It sounds like you did not perform a full installation.

8.1 normally asks you about configuring the system the first time X is
run.

Removing .drakfw starts this process over again.

You may want to go back and install as many RPM's as you can.

Did you reformat and re-install? Or did you attempt an upgrade? ;(

[newbie] Changing window managers

2001-10-18 Thread Johnson, David

I'm running LM8.0 and have been using KDE since I installed, but I have been
playing with Gnome on another machine I have and would like to switch this
machine over.

How can I change from KDE to Gnome?

Thanks

[newbie] Source tarballs and directories...

2001-10-05 Thread Johnson, David

Sorry for the COMPELTE newbie-ness here, but is it safe to remove the
tarball and subsequent directories for a piece of software once I install
it?

E.G. I just downloaded the tarball for Flex and decompressed it into the
directory structure, then went through the configure/make/install process
and the program is now installed. Can I get rid of the tarball and source
directories?

Thanks for the help as I feel my way through an entirely new OS here! :-)
