Re: [newbie] Canon Powershot A85
What's the best way to mount a USB device, in which standard folder, and other than the standard USB Kernel modules, is there anything else needed? FYI, I'm running Mandrake 10.1, kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk. Are you sure it is not being seen? I have not looked up the camera, but most newer cameras show up as a storage device I don´t know if this will help but I had trouble with RH7.3 and my Fuji Finepix which is a storage device. Re: [newbie] modem problem (still!)
Well - I went a bought an external hardware modem which says it is linux compatible. I have attempted to install several times over but get this message each time, when I test. The system doesn't seem to be connected to the Internet. All the cables, power etc seem to be in place. When I installed Mdk 10, I also tested my modem during the installation. Re: [newbie] Mandrake for novice users?
: I'm still searching for that perfect distro to recommend, but this isn't an experience I would want to impose on a novice user. While it's possible I have an unusual configuration, one key thing in an distro for novices has to be excellent hardware support out of the box. Am I missing something obvious here that would solve my problems? I am a typical ignorant homeuser but had no trouble installing Mdk9.1 and find Mkd 10 a dream. The only thing I think they should state clearly on their boxes is to use an external modem. Re: [newbie] Mandrake for novice users?
If it's the Hardware type, that has it's own Processor etc, I have had no problems. But, if it's a winmodem (sometimes labelled a software modem), that relies on using some of the Windows system resources to run, then it can be trickier. I also have an internal modem. The sellers of my computer did send me a generic linux driver for it...but only once I was connected through my external modem which was supported without problem by Mdk. Re: [newbie] browser identification
I haven't installed that, so I have to guess, but that's almost certainly where you can put something to make it look as though you are running IE. There are a few really badly designed sites that simply won't let you in if you are running something else, and they mostly read the browser identification. Some mail apps, like Firefox, allow you to have more than one identification, I understand, and switch between them. That way you escape the really annoying thing of having to pretend that you are running windows. That´s more or less what I thouhgt. I shall just avoid sites that want me to pretend I use Windows :-) thanks Matusr Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hi Maryse, I have a laptop from AGN that's really a Clevo something, and it has a SiS7012 chipset. I'm using the snd-intel8x0 module, and I think that you have to enable ACPI to get sound to work. PCLOS is a bootable linux liveCD based on Mandrake 9.2 made by a guy called Texstar. Tex has for many years produced RPM packages for Mandrake, and now he has forked off his own distro. What is really nice about PCLOS is that you can boot it from CD just like knoppix and it comes up as a Mandrake desktop with everything already preconfigured with Nvidia drivers, Acrobat, Java etc, and with online update sources predefined. (Tex uses Synaptic instead of rpmdrake for updates) Tex has bundled in a sensible selection of applications all ready to go. Perfect for a Linux newbie. If your friend likes what she see. It is real simple to install PCLOS to hard drive as a dual boot with Windows. Or alternatively you could proceed with a standard Mandrake install knowing that if PCLOS runs then Mandrake will also install OK. The modem only works with the 2.4.23 kernel but the rest functions with 2.6 Problem: how do I get the modem driver if I cannot connect her laptop? Maryse Does it have a floppy? If not then CD, memory card reader, or a simple network to another machine with a crossover cable I could have thought of it. Another dumb question: can one put an ext. modem on a laptop? Re: [newbie] Laptop Easy one Silver
Ya. If you have a serial port on the laptop (which most do have) you can plug a serial cable into the serial port and then to an external modem...which, by all reckoning, is best. Re: [newbie] Problems with sound
As root 'urpmi kdeutils-kedit' will install kedit. looks as though I have some missing files and cannot install it. On top of that, my connexion keeps stopping I contact the firm who sold my computer. They tell me the chipset is compatible with intel and soundblast and I can choose another driver.( I wouldn´t know which) they also said I could change the lines in modules.conf to: alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss I did it using Kwrite and no Alsa mixer is gone. a mess. Re: [newbie] Problems with sound
Could you try this: add the line 'options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1' at the end of /etc/modprobe.conf if you run a 2.6 kernel (check with 'uname -r') and reboot. Then check mixer levels with alsamixer and try to aplay some sound. when I do /etc/moodprobe.conf (as root) I get permission denied Maryse Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Problems with sound
I just tried something, make a backup of your /etc/modules.conf and /etc/modprobe.conf like cp /etc/modules.conf /etc/modules.conf.bak and cp /etc/modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf.bak (just in case something goes wrong, because alsaconf writes to these files when it runs). This way you can change things back to what you had before. Now run alsaconf as root and follow the instructions. When it starts it will ask you to shut down alsa and sound, it will attempt to do it its self but its not 100% (it worked for me, without me shutting them down). If you want you can turn them off your self as root with chkconfig alsa off chkconfig sound off and check to see if there off with chkconfig --list and turn them back on with chkconfig alsa on chkconfig sound on if alsaconf doesn't restart them, it should though. Alsaconf wrote a new /etc/modprobe.conf and sound still works. You can try it and see what happens like I said you can put things back if not. Note: It will write to modprobe.conf on 2.6 kernel and modules.conf on 2.4 kernel. Mike did it all but still no sound, sorry Maryse Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Problems with sound
No problem! Did you get back the $ prompt after the first command? You should get it back within half a second because it's a short soundfile. Yes, I got it back almostimmediately If the only problem is that you don't hear anything it probably means a mixer problem. With alsamixer (started from the command line) you must raise the PCM and master sliders and both channels must be unmuted (no 'MM' on top of the slider. Toggle with the 'm' key. Done it. They were not muted. still silent. Maryse Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: [newbie] Modem detected but not supported
The moral is, if you must have a WinModem, get one with a Lucent chipset. I haven't found one yet that I couldn't get to work with the free driver, and the whole modem costs less than the Conexant driver. I find the Linux distros should put on warning on their boxes saying use a ext. modem. Imagine someone who decides to buy a computer without an OS and an internal modem .He decides to install Linux but the modem is not detected/supported. How do you get to download a driver without a functioning modem? When I bought this machine, they sellers told me I would have no problem with Mandrake and the int. modem ( I don´t have Windows). As far as I know, you can't open an Excel password-protected file in OpenOffice. Get the sender to save the file again, without the password, and send you the new version - then it should open OK. There are utilities to do this: http://lastbit.com/excel/default.asp else you can surf through www.astalabista.com and see if there's a free utility to take care of this issue... Re: [newbie] Shutdown/Reboot
I have a problem... If I use the Shutdown/Reboot GUI in either KDE or Gnome, the screen goes black, and the computer just hangs, and does not shut down. Turn it on again, and the HDD has to be checked before it boots up. Mine does just the same ( 9.1) However, Open up a terminal, type poweroff or reboot, and things happen as they should. Thanks for the tip, I just tried and it works. I havent got a problem with this method, but my PC doesnt have a Windows partition, and is shared by other members of my family, and every time one of them has used it, It checks the file system, as they have been bought up on Windows, and keep forgetting the terminal method.. Any Ideas how I can fix this problem so it works as it should? I don´t run Windows either and I am the only one to use the machine. I was told to this by the support team, haven´t tried yet: it appears that the implementation of apic/apm is not totally compatible with the kernel that 9.1 is running on. one thing you could try is updaing your system to the latest kernel that we have made available for 9.1. another possibility is to try kernel parameters that have an effect on acpi and apm. here is how: boot like this: press esc at the lilo screen at the beginning of the boot process type this at the \'boot:\' prompt: linux noapic acpi=off enter or linux noapic acpi=off apm=off enter or linux noacpi noapm apm=power_off enter if none of the above work then try passing one or more of the following to the linux kernel in the above format: acpi=ht nolapic noapic noacpi acpi=off pci=noacpi noapm apm=off apm=power_off Maryse Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Mandrake 10
Alternatively, I could buy the download edition on cheap CDs, and use that as a test to see how things are beforebuying the boxed set. - From Mandrake's point of view, buying the cheapies and subscribing to the club is much better than buying direct from MandrakeSoft. They get all of club money, but only a bit from sales. I am going to ask a stupid question: I don´t mind which way I do it but I need a version as reliable as possible because I am a total ignoramus. On top of that, I have a lousy modem connection so big downloads are not possible. Wouldn´t buying the cheapies and subscribing to the club make me too dependant on too many downloads? So, I did some research last night and learned that an external modem in this situation is the best thing. Now, however, it is not listed as /dev/sda1. Can anyone tell me either a) what the dev entry has changed to or preferably b) how to find out what it is myself. usbview shows a lot of info but doesn't tell me what the /dev entry is cat /proc/bus/usb/devices: T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=12 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=04cb ProdID=0100 Rev=10.00 C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 0mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=08(stor.) Bus: USB Description: FinePix 4700 Zoom / FinePix 1400 Zoom digital camrea (actually spelled 'camrea') Module: Removable:camera Media class: Mass Storage|SFF-8070i I've tried rebooting, modprobing usb-storage (usb-uhci is already in from my usb mouse). I'm sure it's probably right under my nose but that's probably why I can't find it... it's a pretty big nose :O) On RH 7.3 I had the same problem. I was advised to do: # mkdir /mnt/camera mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera it worked. I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 and all I had to do is click on the icon.
