[newbie] netoworking with windows
Hi folks - I've got my Linux Mandrake working beautifully on my laptop and I've turned up at the office where they have a Win NT LAN and I need to plug in and access files on the server. I've got an Ethernet card, I've plugged it in and can surf the net , get email etc so I figure that I'm part of the way there at least... Is it Samba that I need to be installing ? I've found heaps o f documentation on doing the reverse - i.e. networking several Windows PCs with a Linux server but nothing for what I want to do. thanks in advance - Nick Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] LAN
OK right. I have connected to the internet OK before using a modem but now I'm trying to connect though a LAN in the office. I don't know where to begin! I've got a cord coming out of the wall that fits into my Ethernet card and the green light is on but the orange one is not. - Original Message - From: bascule [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 4:04 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] LAN you specify to your browser and email client the relevant ip addresses, the question is whether you are connected to the network those adresses are reached by, is this question about how to use web browsing or about how to set up networking? if the latter then we need more info than you have given, assuming you are referring to a pcmcia ethernet card, what is it connected to, your local network at work? cable modem at home? bascule On Thursday 31 January 2002 2:01 am, you wrote: I've got Linux Mandrake running OK on my laptop - I've got a PCMI Ethernet connection and I want to plug into an Intranet and connect to the internet etc. Where do i specify to my web browser or email client that I want it to use that connection ? Re: [newbie] LAN
Yes I think the card is loaded properly. It shows up in various places and the ifconfig throws up a bunch of stuff after eth0 ... - Original Message - From: bascule [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 4:40 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] LAN do you know if your card is installed properly? with the correct module? what does -as root - 'ifconfig' show you? bascule On Thursday 31 January 2002 3:18 am, you wrote: OK right. [newbie] First install
Hi folks - I've just installed my first copy of Linux on to a Compaq laptop in a dual boot configuration. However, although it seems to boot OK , it then drops out to the black login screen - not sure if that is what it's supposed to do or not. I can then login as root or a user but when I type Startx or StartKDE it says 'unable to open display' - canot connect to X server : $Display is not set. Is this something to do with not selecting the right monitor? I couldn't find anything about laptop displays in the list. Does anyone know which i should choose? And how do i get back into the choosing monitor sequence ? thanks, Nick Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] dialup connection problems
Hi again - I've got another question - I'm trying to set up my dialup connection using kppp and it get's stuck on initializing modem... Also when i query the modem it seems to make contact but the query results window is completely empty. It's an internal laptop modem. Does this all mean that I've got a Winmodem that's not going to work with Linux? Thanks to the people who have helped me with my Linux teething problems so far. - Nick Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] the boot disk problem
Well it's been a long day but it looks like I've finally got Linux on my machine. Yay for me. But now I've got a question - I've logged on and I can see a penguin and the prompt after username and password but where to from there ? How do I load a GNOME? - Original Message - From: Nick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 10:12 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] the boot disk problem On Thursday 10 January 2002 5:23, you wrote: It seems to go through the process of crating a boot disk but then I get an error message: An error occurred during step Install bootloader of the install .. Ok, just as the first thing that comes to mind, have you checked to make sure that your floppy doesn't have any bad sectors? Another thing, if your BIOS and drive are new enough, I think that those 6.1 CDs were bootable. Cheers -- Registered Linux user #225209 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
