The bug mostly manifests itself in not being able to boot into windows after installing into a dual-boot scenario. There has been a lot of talk on the net about this, so google should help you out here. Also, you may want to try turning off LBA in the BIOS. I spent a good part of yesterday googling and reading various forums. From what I found this problem seems to be related to the 2.6 kernel and the way it handles CHS info from the bios and messes with partition tables that causes them to be unreadable by a MS FAT or NTFS system. This problem is found in Fedora, SuSE and Mandrake versions that use a 2.6 kernel. A lot of people when first hearing of this problem automatically think it is a MBR problem, but it goes deeper than that and none of the variations of fdisk /mbr will help. From what I have read it seems that will most likely occur if any partition changes are made and the partition tables are re-written and if your drive detection in bios is set to auto. It has been stated that sometimes changing the bios setting to LBA will correct the problems as long as the tables and MBR haven't been further messed up with repair attempt with all the various utilities. I have also heard, but not verified, that kernel version 2.6.7 fixes that bug but that is a much later version than the one in the current iso's and boxed versions. So far the best course seems to change bios setting to LBA, and do not make any changes to partition tables until you can upgrade your kernel version. The sad part is that none of the distro developers seem to be taking this bug seriously. You will find no mention of it at any of the home pages. I guess since none of the developer types dual boot they don't think it is a major bug. In fact a reply from one jerk said just put your Windows an a separate box, like everyone can have a house full spare computers. . Richard The way I linked xmms to cds in 9.0 didn't work with 9.1, so I use Play Location from the + menu, then /mnt/cdrom Well it all works when the cd is in /mnt/cdrom2, which is actually a DVD drive. /mnt/cdrom is a cd-rw writer type drive. I finally got around to moving from 8.1 to 9.1 this weekend (I know 9.2 is just around the corner). It all went off without a hitch, except, I can't seem to play music cd's. It is not a sound issue, all other audio devices work. It just don't see the music cd's. I'm guessing it is a supermount issue or something. Anyone know any tricks? [newbie] Upgrade Instalation
I am finally getting around to upgrading from 8.1 to 9.1. The machine I am using is setup for triple boot on two HDs, linux-WinXP-Win98SE, I am going to wipe the linux partition and do a clean install. This is my first time trying this. I want to know if there are any caveats? I currently use lilo as the boot manager for the three OS's, will the clean install cause any problems with lilo. I just upgraded from a nVidia TNT video card to a nVidia GeForce4 mx420, and x wont start anymore. I am running Mdk 8.1. I tried running mcc but there was no entry for GeForce4 in the list and none of the avaiable entries would work. Previously I was only using the generic nvidia driver. Any suggestions? [newbie] Multi Booting
I had the problem of buying a HP Pavilion with XP pre-installed. I wanted to install 98SE to solve some compatibility issues, and I also wanted to install Mandrake. So I added a second HD to accommodate all this. The ideal way to solve the XP/98 issue would be to uninstall XP install 98 and re-install XP. But HP does not supply any installation media, just a hidden restore partition which only contains an image of the factory setup. So that was out. After seeking advice, I got a variety of answers that involved disconnecting drives, switching the bios boot sequence, etc. But I figured there must be an easier way. What I ended up doing was, as follows: I created a bootable FAT32 partition on the 2nd HD, leaving the 1st HD entirely NTFS, downloaded a 98se boot disk from bootdisks.com. Then I copied all the bootdisk files to that partition. Then I installed Mandrake and made sure that the 98 partition was included in lilo.config. I booted into the 98 partition, slapped in the 98 CD and installed 98se. When the install finished...everything worked( As far as booting is concerned still need some updated drivers for newer hardware). Lilo comes up will boot whatever system you want. This is what worked for me, no guarantee it will work for everyone. It seems like it should also work with grub, both lilo and grub seem to make each partition belive that they are boot partition. Oh yeah, just to be safe I did do a complete drive image backup before I started the 98 install.
