Re: [newbie] Partition sizes for / and /usr

2001-02-09 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Assuming you're installing LM-7.2:

/usr should be 3Gigs - initial install will put 2.5GB on here leaving
you with 0.5GB
/usr/src - 250MB - make this bigger if you like messing around with
different kernels
/usr/local 800MB
/ - 350Mb (that's because this contains /root and one shouldn't be using
this partition outside of admin purposes)
/tmp - 500MB to 1GB - especially if you're using taper to backup large
files
/var 300MB or more
/boot - 100MB
/home - the remainder of your drive.

Of course, these aren't absolutes since it really depends on what you do
with your system.

Yeah, that's the same problem I had when I tried to install from the rpm.
So, here's what you do with that source RPM. It's quite easy...

First log in as Superuser and go to the directory with your source RPM.

Then type in the following commands:

rpm -i gnapster-1.4.2-1mdk.src.rpm

Now we'll make and compile the new gnapster binary RPM:

rpm -bb /usr/src/RPM/SPECS/gnapster.spec

Let's find where it put the new binary RPM:

find /usr/src/RPM/RPMS -name gnapster*.rpm

Last step, installing the RPM:

rpm -U /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/iX86/gnapster-1.4.2-1mdk.iX86.rpm

That should be it!

The simplest way to install a tarball is as follows:

 1. Unpack the file with "tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz" (assuming it is in
the
 .tar.gz format).

 2. Go into the extracted directory and read the documentation (usually
called
 something like README, INSTALL, etc.).

 3. The documentation should tell you what to do to install the app. Make
sure
you have the required libraries installed (this includes -devel libraries
too)

 4. You will need to install as root, unless you use the "--prefix="
option
with "./configure" (do a "./configure --help" for details).

 5. Run "./configure", then (assuming all goes well) "make", then "make
 install".

 6. Type "gnapster" to see if it worked.

Far better tutorials (this was a really crude crash course) can be found
at
 mandrakeuser.org and linuxnewbie.org.

However, there are several alternatives to installing from a tarball:

 1. Wait for an RPM (which could take forever).

 2. Install Ximian (formerly Helix) GNOME, which always includes the
latest
 version of Gnapster.

 3. Go to rpmfind.net and find the Ximian/Helix RPM (or maybe Red Hat if
it is
available). I'm not sure if this will work without the rest of Ximian
GNOME,
 but it's worth a shot.

 If not, read on...

I had this VERY same problem when I set up my cable modem--turned out I
walked away from that damned Wiz place with a bum piece of hardware.

A couple things you can try:

First, re-configure eth0 to DHCP, do not use any hostname, empty the
entries
 for DNS, etc.

Second, shutdown modem and computer. Plug in the modem and wait for it to
initialise. When that is done, turn on the computer.

Check the network card (eth0) to make sure that the lights are lit...if
not,
there is no signal from the modem, and no negotiation can place. Try
another
cable. If the same thing happens, and you don't get any lights on the
network card itself, try resetting the modem a few more times.

If you still have the problem and don't get the little lights, take the
damed thing back and scream and yell for a new one. (Or "yell" and then
"scream"... which ever floats 'yer boat--or works more quickly).

 Hi all,
Need help on configuring my network !!
I've just installed Mandrake Linux 7.1, and the Network doesn't work.
I am currently trying to connect to my local Cable company using DHCP.
That
doesn't work. After trying a few things in the 'Network Configuration' in
DrakConf, I tried to hardcode my IP adress. That doesn't work either.
Besides, the "eth0" device fails to initialise during the Boot. That
seems
strange as HardDrake still detects it properly, and tells me it's
configured. According to HardDrake, the card uses I/0 = -1 and IRQ =
-1...
is that normal? It doesn't allow me to choose any other values for these
parameters... Besides, HardDrake doesn't explicitly display my card as
being
mounted as device eth0... is that normal also, or is that the cause of
the
 problem?
So what shall I do to make my network work?? Do I need to mount my
network
card as device eth0 (How do I do that?)? Why does it fail to initialize
during the Boot? And what do I need to do to be able to connect to my
cable
 provider?
 Environment: PII - 350 MHz pc - 128 Mb RAM - Mandrake Linux 7.1 -
3c905B-TX
 PCI Network card
 Thanks a lot,
 ./\.

Macromedia's 'Backstage', I don't think they have anything available at
this time. If you're interested, goto this page:
 http://www.macromedia.com/software/

They seem to be getting into the Linux thing, so maybe in the next
couple of years we'll see something. This site does mention that they
will be releasing 'generator 2' for web pages in November.

There is a Shockwave for linux, which I use. But yesterday, I went to the
Budweiser Whassup site, and it hanged Netscape. Plus, even after killing the
netscape process, my sound card kept playing "Whassup!" over and over again
for the next few hours. I just put it on mute and this morning it seems to
be ok (maybe because I closed the lid of my laptop).

Hello everyone.

I had installed Mandrake 7.0 as the single OS on my box. No problem at all. Then my

with Windows 98. This new hd is 20Gb big, and initially, when installing Win98 I left

the disk would be for Linux. Then I tried to install Mandrake, but DrakX told me that
the partition for Linux is beyond the cylinder
1024, so I quit installation. I surfed the internet to read some howtos, but my
confusion grew larger. My question is: can I install
Linux without making a /boot partition within the cylinder 1024?

Can I keep my hd like

!Win98(10Gb)--!!Linux!

or should I go to something like

!-/boot-!!-Win98---!!-Linux--!

Please, if you'd be so kind to clarify this to me.

Thanks in advance.

So, someone out there should still have it.

Mogens, I hope the following will help you a bit.

Here's an example from /etc/fstab :

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd00 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermountfs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

Here's the Man Document:

SUPERMOUNT(8) MandrakeSoft SUPERMOUNT(8)

NAME
supermount - Enable or disable supermount feature

SYNOPSIS
   supermount [OPTION]... disable | enable

DESCRIPTION
supermount allows system administrator to enable or dis¡
able the supermount feature offered in recent kernels.
This feature automatically manages mounting and unmounting
removable medias when needed. The script simply adds or
remove the supermount option from within the entries of
the /etc/fstab file. Without option -i the modified file
   is printed to stdout.

supermount has to be launched with one of the following
   arguments:

enable in order to enable supermount feature on relevant
  drives (cdrom and floppy drives),

   disable
in order to disable the supermount feature on all
  drives.

OPTIONS
   -f=FILE, --file=FILE
Indicates an alternate file where to make modifica¡
  tions. The default is /etc/fstab.

   -i, --infile
Modifications are made directly to /etc/fstab or
FILE specified through -f option, instead of being
  outputted to stdout.

   -h, --help, -?
  print a short help message.

is supermount reliable?
i ask because i cannot get it to work, i have reinstalled several times

unmount manually using a combination of the mount command and draksconf
alternately, also when simply examining mounted hard drive options
through Draksconf i now have no access to my cd drives which used to
work!

both cdrom and cdrw are scsi devices -a clue?

i have read about some sort of timeout option for the mount command but
i don't know if or how this might apply to my floppy drive- something to
do with trying to read the files on the floppy before the drive is

Re: [newbie] adsl

2000-04-27 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Actually, setting up DSL for linux is much much easier than setting up that freakin'
KPPP. As far as your connectivity with DSL.
You can go a couple of routes. The first option (which I prefer) is to get a couple
of static IP addresses from your ISP. One for
each of your machines. The second option is to stick with one IP and use your
linuxbox as a proxy server. Connect your DSL modem
to your hub and off you go! Try out that GTE Bronze+ package. It gets the most for
your $.

There is a new DSL that doesn't require you to be close to a central station. Which
means pretty much everyone will be able to get
DSL. It even goes up to 4Mb/Sec. But this is still in the works.

So get that stuff ordered and I'll get to more details if needed.

the dsl and the isp), I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience
with this combination? I know I can use it with windows, will it easily
configure with Linux? If anyone has the time, could you go into some
detailed setup? My current situation is two computers connected using a
Netgear auto sensing 4 port hub. I would like to be able to connect the
dsl modem directly to the hub (is that possible?) and let both computers
(and future computers) to connect directly through the hub. I still
haven't been able to configure simple NFS under Linux, although I'm able
to ping - I don't know if that's relevant. Do I need to setup one box
for a gateway, or can I just use the hub itself?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Regardless, it sounds like a permissions problem with your realplayer file.

1. get into your console as Superuser

First, make sure you have numlock-1.0-7mdk installed. Next, open kpackage and find
the numlock package (System / Configuration / Boot and Init). Single click on the
package and look at the 'properties' tab to verify that you have this version
installed. Next look at the 'File list' tab and you'll see a list of where the
different files relevant to that package have been installed; you should see an
entry that says /usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock

If you don't see this package, then you either don't have the correct version or
somehow the file was corrupted when you downloaded; that program was specifically
added to the last version. If you would like to get emails on the latest packages
and updates, go to the Mandrake home page and navigate to the developer area and
subscribe to the changlog list.

I can verify that the program does exist, because I just installed it about a week
or two ago and it works great.

Let me know how it works out, Mike

Hello everyone...
I have installed Mandrake 7.0 a week ago...
I just have a small question..
I heard things about Linux like "Rock Solid" and
so...
What i noted is that Mandrake 7.0 crashes just like
Windows!!! Yes... Its crashes are much less than
Windows! but.. It crashes!!! It crashed about 4 times
this week!! (windows crashes at a rate of 3 times/day!
so Linux is better!)

well... here are the crashes!
KDE: I was opening 2 windows of Netscape. And
suddenly, the whole system freezed! I just could move
the mouse! but i can't do anything! I had to press
ctrl+alt+backspace to log out! and it worked!
KDE: I pressed Log Out, the screen turned black, and i
couldn't Do any thing! i had to press "Reset"
Xfce3: It was my first time to even see it! i just
used it for 15 seconds!! :) i pressed the button with
the penguin, and the whole system freezed!! I had to
press "reset"
Gnome: I was just moving around... It suddenly made a
GPF, and told me that this may be due to a bug, and
they gave some email to report at! (this is not really
serious, as it didn't really crash the system!)

Now, the point is... I am NOT upset of all these
crashes!! :)
I am used to them from the old days of Windows!
Windows taught me lots of things! when the system
crashes, I just grin and coldly press the "Reset"
button!

The point is... Why do people say that linux is "ROCK
SOLID"?? it is NOT "rock solid"! It is just," more
solid than Windows!"
I was just wondering!! :)

Thank you...

Mohamed Saad

Note: All my hardware is supported under linux, in
case u r wondering!! :)

Re: [newbie] Where do Programs Go?

2000-04-15 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Andy,

Before we start... let's drift back to windows for a second... For installations, you
just click the install file and it pretty
much does everything for you. RPM files are also capable of this - IF the author
included the icon, documentation, and a Kmenu
entry. This is not always the case.

I'll assume you're using KDE. You can do all of this logged in as a regular user.
Activate the Drakeconf icon on your desktop. It
will ask you for the superuser password. Once in, you will see the button for
Kpackage. Use Kpackage to open your RPM file.

When you are installing with RPM files, the Package Manager (Kpackage) will list every
file that it's going to put into your system.
If you didn't see it, you can have Kpackage search for it (in Kpackage). Then you can
look at the file list. Generally, the
executables go into "/usr/bin" or "/usr/bin/local". The documentation usually drops
into "/usr/doc". Also, check for an icon file
(not always there). You may also see file entries for your Kmenu. If the RPM came
with all the goodies, you can just right-click
your kpanel and choose "restart". Check your Kmenu for the installed application.

If you don't see a menu entry, you can make one. Open up File Manager as superuser.
Select "Edit GlobalApplications". It will
list the files and folders responsible for your Kmenu layout. In windows, it's like
right-clicking the start button and choosing
"Explore" so you can edit the "start" menu. Back to Linux... So go into your desired
folder and right-clicknew-application. Fill
in the blanks, choose your icon, and click okay. Restart your Kpanel and it should
show up on your Kmenu.

Setting up MIMEs... While in File Manager as superuser, select "Edit GlobalMIME
Types" and there you go. Between this and "Edit
GlobalApplications" you should be able to link file types with their corresponding
applications.

Ask again if I forgot to answer something.

OK..when you install, where does Linux put this program.. Bear with me

Bryan,

ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus has no affect at all.

I am tried the xf86config. I was instructed to look in this file:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/monitors, and my monitor is not listed.

Any suggestions?

Try ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus and see if that changes your resolution.
If
not, try running "xf86config" from either the command line, or from an xterm
session and somewhere in there, you will be able to define more that one
resolution type. I think. Can someone else on the list verify?

Hi All,

I am running Mandrake Air 7.0 on an AMD 233 Mhz system using
96 megs of ram. The install went well, and it saw all my DOS
partitions for Windoze and listed them on the desktop, along
with the floppy and CDROM drives.

However, there is no entry in fstab for my IDE-ATAPI AIWA tape
drive.

Lothar minimally sees it as /dev/hdd (2nd device on the secondary
IDE channel). I've tried manually installing it through linuxconf applet
but I'm either not doing it right, or don't have all the params
correct. I can't get Linux to recognize or initialize the drive.

Any help on this would be appreciated. It's my intent to use the
tape drive for backups. The drive works flawlessly on the Windoze
side.

Regards,

Don

DO NOT go for the OSS drivers for Yamaha. You're much better off spending that same

Which Yamaha Chip set is it? Most likely, it is not supported because Yamaha won't

I'm still a bit puzzle about this "LI" freeze on bootup instead of LILO BOOT. This
is on a lin/win box dual boot using lilo...
It just happened for the second time and I can't figure out why. I had to boot with a
floppy and reinstall LILO. But before it was
done installing lilo, it stopped with an error of "Partition entry not found". To fix
lilo.conf , I had to change label=windows to
label=dos because my hda1 fat32 is labeled "dos".  Here's where I'm confused:

Why did lilo work with the old lilo.conf and then suddenly not work and freeze on
bootup? And then, why did it work okay after I
reinstalled lilo with the correct "label" entry in lilo.conf? What caused lilo to
suddenly decide not to accept the "label" entry
for hda1 in the old lilo.conf?

This is almost certainly a problem with hard drive geometry. You should
open up your PC and look at the label glued onto it, and make a
note of the number of cyliners, heads and sectors. If you want a dual-boot
machine, and the windows part already works OK, then
you don't need to mess with the BIOS.

If this is not the case, have a look at the BIOS, and try setting LBA as
the hard disk addressing mode.

If this still doesn't work, boot linux from a boot floppy, edit
/etc/lilo.conf and add this line

append = "hd=cyl,hds,sctrs"

where cyl is the number of cylinders, hds is the number of heads and sctrs
is the number of sectors printed on your disk.

You might find the LILO mini HOWTO and the BOOTDISK HOWTO useful,

Come to think of it... you might be better off spending that money on an inexpensive
SB soundcard (which is a snap to setup). At
least when you play mpg files, the sound will sync with the video. The OSS driver
will not sync up the audio with video very well.
This is while using "Mpeg TV" (shareware).

[newbie] Mdk7.0-2 and Laptops - Installation Questions

2000-02-23 Thread Sevatio Octavio

I'm contemplating installing Mdk7.0-2 on a Compaq 466MHz AMD Laptop. I've never
installed Mandrake on a laptop before. For those
with such experience, is the level of difficulty similar to that of a desktop install?
If not, what problem might one encounter
when doing a laptop install?

[newbie] Supermount Activation Help

2000-02-19 Thread Sevatio Octavio

When I installed Mdk7.0-2, I did not choose the "supermount" option. Since then, I've
upgraded to Kernel 2.2.14-15mdk to that
supermount is supported. Now, how do I get supermount to work? Do I need to
update/install any software?

I did choose the "supermount" option when I installed Mdk7.0-2 because of the known
problems. Since then, I've upgraded the kernel
to support supermount. In order for me to get supermount to work, do I have to
install any software? Or, do I just modify my
fstab?

that would configure it. But am not sure of the translation between Win95

for How-To's on the subject but none really get as specific as I need (read

Re: [newbie] How do I install programs?

2000-02-12 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Also look at http://www.linuxberg.com for additional software.

As far as how to install software... (Assuming you know as much as I did when I first
started - Zero)

When you download files with the extension of RPM, you can click the RPM files and the
install process is similar to that of windowz
(somewhat automated).

When you download files with the extension of .tar.gz, you need to place it in a
folder then fire up the xconsole (kinda like DOS).
go to that folder: cd /foldername
"unzip: tar -zxf programname.tar.gz"
it will then extract
find the extracted files and folders and look for a Readme file. That file should
help you the rest of the way...
Then what generally happens is the following...
you type in: "./configure"
then:"make" (this compiles your source files)
then:"make install" (installs)
now, you may have to find the binary files (usually in "/bin") and assign an icon and
create a link from Kmenu...

Seve,
I hope you find this helpful.

Hi there Brent,
First of all, please don't post to the list using html - not everyone
uses an html compliant e-mail program and either wont be able to view
your post or it will look really messy!

For your sound card, run "sndconfig" or "soundconfig" in the console,
and follow the instructions. You cannot install your existing Windows
apps on Linux - you will need a version of the same program written for
Linux, or a similar Linux program if the manufacturer only make a
windows version. Installation is handled mainly in one of 2 ways. You
download the app you want, compile it for your system and use it, or you
get a pre-made binary of the app (usually in RPM format and use the
Linux rpm command to install it for you. For a good list of apps for
Linux try looking at http://www.freshmeat.net/

Forget Photoshop - your distribution comes with an app called the gimp -
wicked image manipulation app that u can do all the Photoshop stuff in!
Mandrake also comes with a pdf viewer built in - I suggest you read the
docs inc. with the distro by clicking on the docs icon on your kde
desktop.

As for Quake3, I have this running quite nicely on my m/c with a Voodoo2
card etc. Try http://www.linuxquake.com/ for details.

You need to get into the habit of looking around your system for
information, a lot of what you are asking is answered in the howto's,
man pages and general docs. installed with your distribution, but
hopefully the above will give you a general idea of where to get
started.

Ok, so I decided to try to switch to linux, only it'd be great if I
could get my sound card and modem to work(previous mail), and also how
to use it.

Question 1: How do I install programs, and what can I install? If I
want a game(q3 for instance) or an app(adobe photoshop, acrobat, etc.),
how do I install it? Linux is pointless to me if I can install any of
my applications, or anything excpet what's installed when you install
linux. Where can I get applications for linux?

Second: I have a geforce card. Can I even play quake etc.? Do I even
have accelerated functions for my card? (assuming I get my sound card
to work).

Re: [newbie] Cable Modem Setup

2000-02-12 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Ok, here we go...

fire up DrakConf
Click - Network Configuration
Go to - Basic Host Information
- for Hostname Tab| Hostname: put in the Host name from TCP/IP Properties | DNS
Configuration Tab from your winbox
Go to - the Adapter 1 Tab (linbox)
"Primary name + Domain" should be the same as "Domain" in "DNS Configuration" of you
winbox.
"Aliases (opt)" should be blank
fill in "IP Adress" and "Netmask"
"Net Device" and "Kernel Module" should remain the same.
Click the [Accept] button
Now you're back at "Network Configurator"
Select "Name Server Specification (DNS)"
Fill in "IP of name server 1" "IP of name server 2 (opt)" with your "DNS Search
Order"
At the top, make sure "DNS Is Required for Normal Operation" is pushed in.
[Accept]
Now you're back to "Network Configurator" again.
Select "Routing and Gateways"
Push [Set] button
fill that with your Gateway IP and [Enable],
[Accept]
In "Routes to other Networks" press [Quit]
In "Network Configurator" press [Quit]
In "Status of the System" press [Activate the Changes]

Reboot... just kidding. However, that should be it. I've just converted two @Home
winboxes over to linboxes and that's how I got
them to work.

Let me know how it goes or if you can't understand my gibberish.
