The documentation should tell you what to do to install the app. Make sure you have the required libraries installed (this includes -devel libraries too) 4. You will need to install as root, unless you use the "--prefix=" option with "./configure" (do a "./configure --help" for details). 5. Run "./configure", then (assuming all goes well) "make", then "make install". 6. Type "gnapster" to see if it worked. Far better tutorials (this was a really crude crash course) can be found at mandrakeuser.org and linuxnewbie.org. However, there are several alternatives to installing from a tarball: 1. Wait for an RPM (which could take forever). 2. Install Ximian (formerly Helix) GNOME, which always includes the latest version of Gnapster. 3. Go to rpmfind.net and find the Ximian/Helix RPM (or maybe Red Hat if it is available). I'm not sure if this will work without the rest of Ximian GNOME, but it's worth a shot. Re: [newbie] adsl
Actually, setting up DSL for linux is much much easier than setting up that freakin' KPPP. As far as your connectivity with DSL. You can go a couple of routes. The first option (which I prefer) is to get a couple of static IP addresses from your ISP. One for each of your machines. The second option is to stick with one IP and use your linuxbox as a proxy server. Connect your DSL modem to your hub and off you go! Try out that GTE Bronze+ package. It gets the most for your $. There is a new DSL that doesn't require you to be close to a central station. Which means pretty much everyone will be able to get DSL. It even goes up to 4Mb/Sec. But this is still in the works. So get that stuff ordered and I'll get to more details if needed. One thing though, is your XF86Config file set with the correct monitor settings for horizontal and vertical frequencies? It's likely that you will have to do it manually to get it setup correctly. Re: [newbie] Where do Programs Go?
Andy, Before we start... let's drift back to windows for a second... For installations, you just click the install file and it pretty much does everything for you. RPM files are also capable of this - IF the author included the icon, documentation, and a Kmenu entry. This is not always the case. I'll assume you're using KDE. You can do all of this logged in as a regular user. Activate the Drakeconf icon on your desktop. It will ask you for the superuser password. Once in, you will see the button for Kpackage. Use Kpackage to open your RPM file. When you are installing with RPM files, the Package Manager (Kpackage) will list every file that it's going to put into your system. If you didn't see it, you can have Kpackage search for it (in Kpackage). Then you can look at the file list. Generally, the executables go into "/usr/bin" or "/usr/bin/local". The documentation usually drops into "/usr/doc". Also, check for an icon file (not always there). You may also see file entries for your Kmenu. If the RPM came with all the goodies, you can just right-click your kpanel and choose "restart". Check your Kmenu for the installed application. If you don't see a menu entry, you can make one. Open up File Manager as superuser. Select "Edit GlobalApplications". It will list the files and folders responsible for your Kmenu layout. In windows, it's like right-clicking the start button and choosing "Explore" so you can edit the "start" menu. Back to Linux... So go into your desired folder and right-clicknew-application. Fill in the blanks, choose your icon, and click okay. Restart your Kpanel and it should show up on your Kmenu. Setting up MIMEs... While in File Manager as superuser, select "Edit GlobalMIME Types" and there you go. Between this and "Edit GlobalApplications" you should be able to link file types with their corresponding applications. Ask again if I forgot to answer something. Use "setup" as superuser. Do your best at selecting the closes thing to your monitor and test to see if it looks okay. It doesn't have to be perfect because you can do the fine-tuning in the next step. Then open up "/etc/X11/XF86Config" in some editor. Now go to the "Monitor Section". Change the two lines "HorizSync" "VertRefresh" to match your monitor's specifications. Restart X. Please let me know if you need more info. Re: [newbie] avoid YAMAHA Audio Chips
DO NOT go for the OSS drivers for Yamaha. You're much better off spending that same amount on a SoundBlaster Card. Even with the commercial OSS, it is still not fully functional and has a couple of bugs. If I could do it all over again, I would get an SB card. I've seen some nice ones around $29 and they're a snap to get running. Re: [newbie] YAMAHA Audio Chip Supported ?????
Samir, Which Yamaha Chip set is it? Most likely, it is not supported because Yamaha won't release their codes to ALSA. So you will have to fork-out $30 ($20 + $10 for the Yamaha Module) for a driver from http://www.opensound.com. If you take that route you'll need to remember the following: Because of a Known Bug: When starting up the OSS sound driver, you will have to include this in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local soundon soundoff soundon For some reason it won't start with the first soundon command and OSS is aware of this problem. Re: [newbie] People who get LI at boot up rather than LILO BOOT:
I'm still a bit puzzle about this "LI" freeze on bootup instead of LILO BOOT. This is on a lin/win box dual boot using lilo... It just happened for the second time and I can't figure out why. I had to boot with a floppy and reinstall LILO. But before it was done installing lilo, it stopped with an error of "Partition entry not found". To fix lilo.conf , I had to change label=windows to label=dos because my hda1 fat32 is labeled "dos". Here's where I'm confused: Why did lilo work with the old lilo.conf and then suddenly not work and freeze on bootup? And then, why did it work okay after I reinstalled lilo with the correct "label" entry in lilo.conf? What caused lilo to suddenly decide not to accept the "label" entry for hda1 in the old lilo.conf? If this is not the case, have a look at the BIOS, and try setting LBA as the hard disk addressing mode. If this still doesn't work, boot linux from a boot floppy, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add this line append = "hd=cyl, hds, sctrs" where cyl is the number of cylinders, hds is the number of heads and sctrs is the number of sectors printed on your disk. Re: [newbie] YAMAHA Audio Chip Supported ?????
Come to think of it... you might be better off spending that money on an inexpensive SB soundcard (which is a snap to setup). At least when you play mpg files, the sound will sync with the video. The OSS driver will not sync up the audio with video very well. This is while using "Mpeg TV" (shareware). Re: [newbie] How do I install programs?
Also look at http://www.linuxberg.com for additional software. As far as how to install software... (Assuming you know as much as I did when I first started - Zero) When you download files with the extension of RPM, you can click the RPM files and the install process is similar to that of windowz (somewhat automated). When you download files with the extension of .tar.gz, you need to place it in a folder then fire up the xconsole (kinda like DOS). go to that folder: cd /foldername "unzip: tar -zxf programname.tar.gz" it will then extract find the extracted files and folders and look for a Readme file. That file should help you the rest of the way... Then what generally happens is the following... you type in: "./configure" then:"make" (this compiles your source files) then:"make install" (installs) now, you may have to find the binary files (usually in "/bin") and assign an icon and create a link from Kmenu... Seve, I hope you find this helpful. -Original Message- From: Steve Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Saturday, February 12, 2000 7:16 AM Subject: RE: [newbie] How do I install programs? Hi there Brent, First of all, please don't post to the list using html - not everyone uses an html compliant e-mail program and either wont be able to view your post or it will look really messy! For your sound card, run "sndconfig" or "soundconfig" in the console, and follow the instructions. You cannot install your existing Windows apps on Linux - you will need a version of the same program written for Linux, or a similar Linux program if the manufacturer only make a windows version. Installation is handled mainly in one of 2 ways. You download the app you want, compile it for your system and use it, or you get a pre-made binary of the app (usually in RPM format and use the Linux rpm command to install it for you. For a good list of apps for Linux try looking at http://www.freshmeat.net/ Forget Photoshop - your distribution comes with an app called the gimp - wicked image manipulation app that u can do all the Photoshop stuff in! Mandrake also comes with a pdf viewer built in - I suggest you read the docs inc. with the distro by clicking on the docs icon on your kde desktop. As for Quake3, I have this running quite nicely on my m/c with a Voodoo2 card etc. Try http://www.linuxquake.com/ for details. You need to get into the habit of looking around your system for information, a lot of what you are asking is answered in the howto's, man pages and general docs. installed with your distribution, but hopefully the above will give you a general idea of where to get started. Ok, here we go... fire up DrakConf Click - Network Configuration Go to - Basic Host Information - for Hostname Tab| Hostname: put in the Host name from TCP/IP Properties | DNS Configuration Tab from your winbox Go to - the Adapter 1 Tab (linbox) "Primary name + Domain" should be the same as "Domain" in "DNS Configuration" of you winbox. "Aliases (opt)" should be blank fill in "IP Adress" and "Netmask" "Net Device" and "Kernel Module" should remain the same. Click the [Accept] button Now you're back at "Network Configurator" Select "Name Server Specification (DNS)" Fill in "IP of name server 1" "IP of name server 2 (opt)" with your "DNS Search Order" At the top, make sure "DNS Is Required for Normal Operation" is pushed in. [Accept] Now you're back to "Network Configurator" again. Select "Routing and Gateways" Push [Set] button fill that with your Gateway IP and [Enable], [Accept] In "Routes to other Networks" press [Quit] In "Network Configurator" press [Quit] In "Status of the System" press [Activate the Changes] Reboot... just kidding.
