[newbie] Reading UDF on CDRW problem

2002-01-02 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi All People,

CDRW mounting and reading UDF problem.

/dev/cdrom and /mn/cdrom CRWriter
/dev/cdrom1 and /mnt/cdrom1 CDRom

/etc/fstab table as follows:
LABEL=/ /   ext3 defaults1 1
none/dev/ptsdevpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none/proc proc defaults0 0
none/dev/shmtmpfsdefaults0 0
/dev/hda7 swapswap defaults0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660,udf
noauto,owner,kudzu,rw 0 0
/dev/fd0/mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 auto noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

- Could mount CDRW from CDRom desktop icon but could read its content.

- Could mount on Console Window and read CDRW with following command;

mount /dev/cdrom -t udf /mnt/cdrom
or
mount /dev/cdrom1 -t udf /mnt/cdrom

mounting CDRW on CDWriter desktop icon only reading following 2 files;
- autorun.inf
- udrinst.exe

Any suggestion on modifying /etc/fstab for remedy.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] RAID question-ATA133 hard disc and hard discs connection

2001-12-25 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Civileme

Merry Christmas

Thanks for your competent advice and time spent.

I would only consider true RAID, hardware RAID in practical use. In
parallel, I would not skip software RAID to envisage my knowledge in this
respect. Maybe in some days late it will replace hardware RAID.

 designed
  controller is needed ?

Yes, but there is no support for the fake hardware RAID in 8.1. Read
support is sort-of there to allow compatibility with reading a Windows
RAID but there is no support for using the software RAID in the PROM on
the RAID controller that is actually a BIOS extenstion.

You folks don't know you are paying $30-60 extra to a hardware vendor
for a BIOS extension PROM? Or that the software in there is protected
by kaw from reverse engineering so that being compatible with the
WinRAID controller is at the mercy of whatever scraps of infor the
manufacturer will give us?

Do yourselves a favor. Don't buy the fake RAID unless you really need
it for windows. Even then, real hardware RAID is preferable and
available here:

http://www.arcoide.com/

And for info on the open source RAID project to provide some
compatibility with the WinRAIDs, go here:

http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/pdcraid/

If you want to know which controllers support full 133 cable speed,
check this:

http://www.linux-ide.org/chipsets.html

Of course you can use a 133 drive on a lesser controller--no harm done.
You just cannot get full speed out of it.

Finally, if you are considering buying new IDE equipment, be aware of
which of it is actively supporting linux by checking here:

http://www.linux-ide.org/endorsements.html

In particular, one of the brands not listed is a source of continuing
problems just to get the disk geometry right and should never, ever be
used above ATA / 33 on any machine though they rate themselves for 66,
100 and 133 without the hardware on board the drive to meet the
standard. And if you ask them they will tell you in no uncertain terms
that they don't support linux.

Linux has its own software RAID which covers modes 0, 1, 4, and 5, 3 is
best left to real hardware.

For most linices, the drivers are the same, right out of the kernel,
plain vanilla and written to the _standards_ defined by the hardware
manufacturers. More than one hardware manufacturer meets those
standards with a combination of corner-curring dodges on the hareware
and their own third-party drivers (for windows) to make up for the
deficiencies of the hardware. Naturally they work only with windows
because no one who is economizing will see any cost-effectiveness in
writing for a system that has only 5% market share on desktops,(and the
folks who use servers for real business buy something else anyway). One
even offers a detection service direct to windows users to pre-warn you
when your drive is about to fail. You can search under Data Lifeguard
to find it, but it works only with Windows. We have a similar feature
by activating the SMART technology on your drives, but just local to
your computer.

Now, insofar as ATA/xx is concerned, sometimes the highest possible xx
is not a good idea. Before 8.2, I will issue another versiuon of
drakopt to run the tests to find the best speed for your drives. There
are many cases where a higher speed _reduces_ performance because the
noise causes more repeat requests, and there are many situations where
ATA/66 actually outperforms ATA/100 on an individual machine, and some
cases where ATA/33 outperforms ATA/66 (most severe I saw was a WD200AB
on a MaxData computer set up by RH to run ATA/66 which provided
1.86Mb/s. At ATA/33 with optimizing settings determined by DrakOpt, it
was getting 9.62 Mb/s.) Remember that higher speeds mean smaller
signals in terms of total charge, and the energy in these signals are
now small compared with a secondary cosmic ray.

Please, I have answered this question enough. Next time someone else
answer with a link to the archives pointing to this or any of the other
articles.

Hi,

Sorry to cut in. Reading your posting I have certain questions to
ask. Kindly help .

1) Some line begins with ' ' similar to answering a posting. What do
they represent for ?

such as
  ./configure \
  --with-apache=../apache_1.3.19 \
  --with-crt=/etc/ssl/certs/server.crt \
  --with-key=/etc/ssl/private/server.key

2)
An Asterisk * marked after an application such as Apache*, PHP*, Mod*,
etc., do we need them in the config file ?

3)
Some line begins with #, Is this line only for explanation not involving
configuration (not executing commands) ?

4)
In following NOTE:
Copy the httpd.conf file to the /etc/httpd/conf/ directory.
Copy the apache file to the /etc/logrotate.d/ directory.
Copy the httpd script file to the /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory.

Where can apache file and httpd script be located ?

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Help: Linux cannot connect mail server via broadband

2001-11-18 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi All People,

I tried several days but could not make Linux (RH 7.2) connected to ISP
mail server to download emails via broadband. The cable is permanently
connected to the PC. Starting Linux, broadband is automatically
connected. I can only send emails but can't download emails.

I tried both Kmail and Evolution to connect to ISP mail server with same
result. Each time when I clicked CheckMail, following warning pop-up

...
.
I said pass your password
And then the server said
-ERR authorization failed

Test on fetchmailconf

Fetchmail Test Result is as follows:

fetchmail: POP3 +OK 11300 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
fetchmail: POP3 CAPA\r
fetchmail: POP3 -ERR authorization first
fetchmail: authorization first
fetchmail: POP3 USER satimis \ r
fetchmail: POP3 +OK
fetchmail: POP3 PASS * \ r
fetchmail: POP3 -ERR authorization failed
fetchmail: authorization failed
fetchmail: authorization failed on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
fetchmail: POP3 Quit \ r
fetchmail: Query status = 3 (AUTHFAIL)
fetchmail: Normal termination. Status 0
Done

Test ontelnetcommand

telnet pop.xxx.com 110
Trying xxx.x.xxx.xxx..
Connected topop.xxx.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Typing USER satimis
it prompted
+ok

and then
Typing PASS xx
-ERR authorization failed
Connection closed by foreign host

I only use English alphabets and number (0 - 9) in password and am absolute
sure the USER name and password entered are correct.

With the same USER name and password I can connect the same ISP mail server
in Eudora and Outlook Express to download emails.

Kindly help !!!

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Installation and config of apache + php 4 + mod_ss

2001-11-18 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi All People,

I am going to build apache + php 4 + mod_ss on Mandrake 8.1 to experience
their installation and configuration and expecting to receive some advice
from the list.

I found follwoing components in the CDs.

MM_VERSION=mm-1.1.3-1.i386.RPM

APACHE_VERSION=apache_1.3.20-16.i386.RPM

OPENSSL_VERSION=openssl-0.9.6b-8.i386.RPM

MODSSL_VERSION=mod_ssl-2.8.4-9.i386.RPM

MYSQL_VERSION=mysql-3.23.41-1.i386.RPM

PHP_VERSION=php-4.0.6-7.i386.RPM

IMAP_VERSION=imap-2000c-15.i386.RPM

MODPERL_VERSION=mod_perl-1.24_01-3.i386.RPM

I suppose all of them being necessary for my application. If I am wrong
please correct me, thanks. Any missing ?

My questions are :

1) I selected standard installation of Mandrake. I am not quite sure
whether some of them having been installed. How to check them ?

2) To install those components which should come first

3) Installation starts from KDE Application -- System -- Package Manager
or RPM each of them in Console Window. Which will be more convenient ?

4) To configure those components to make the server works. Which of them
should be configured first.

5) Are their configuration guides in the Man file or some other place.

6) What are the difference between openssl-0.9.6b-8.i386.RPM and
openssh-server-2.9p2-7.i386.rpm

Kindly advise.

Thanks in advance.

At time performing fetchmailconf test it was discovered that fetchmailconf
has not been installed. I RPM it and performed following test:

Configuration
- Use NOVICE configuration
- Poll interval 0 (also tried 3)
- Protocol POP3 (also tried auto)
- Password and Login :- same as used in Win ME PC which runs fine
- Use SSL (not selected)
- Check server SSL certificate (not selected)
- Server pop.xxx.net
- Processing options
Suppress deletion of message after reading (selected)
Fetch old messages as well as new (selected)

Fetchmail Test Result

fetchmail: POP3 +OK 11346 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
fetchmail: POP3 CAPA\r
fetchmail: POP3 -ERR authorization first
fetchmail: authorization first

fetchmail: POP3 Quit \ r

I still can't discover the failure cause. Netscape browser works properly.

from website (md5sum matched). Now PS/2 port is still not working and I
have to connect the mouse to serial port.

Later I found telnet client command missing from bash and I have RPM
it. But Kmail sitll could not download emails from ISP server with the
same warning pop-up.

From Konsole window I typed telnet pop.aaa.net 110 (also

Trying xxx.x.xxx.xxx ...

And, as long as a passwor is not needed for an SMTP server (whenever it is

In the other hand, you will need a password to download your messages from

Password is case sensitive. You might try reentering your password under
settings and see if that changes anything. Make sure if it is capitalized to
your service provider that is the way it is entered or on the other hand if
it is all lower case to the provider that is the way you enter it.

Re: [newbie] setting up proxy server

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your further advice.

I think your first step, Stephen, is to clearly define
what you want to *do* with all that hardware. Until
you do that, it's difficult to advise you more
specifically.

I am planning using the Linux box, a slower machine with following config. ;

CPU Pentinum 133
Hard disk 3.6G
RAM32MB

as Proxy server, SMB server for printer and firewall.

If it can't work then I will convert the Win 98 PC, with following config.,
as Linux server serving a Linux Box, Win ME and Win XP ;

CPUPentinum II 350
Hard disk 6G
RAM 128MB

Have you had any suggustion ? Also the size of each partition for Proxy
server, SMB server and Firewall ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] setting up proxy server

2001-10-30 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your advice.

Samba is an emulator for Window's SMB (Server Message
Block) protocol used by Windows for file and print
sharing. Since you say you have 3 more boxes with
Win98, then you will need to set up Samba if you want
file or printer sharing. However, you do not need it
for sharing an internet connection (Squid or even NAT
with IP masquerading is all you need for that).

I have 3 Win boxes and 1 Linux box. However those 3 Win boxes can be
easily converted to Linux box because I have mobile racks and spare hard disks.

My question is can I use my Linux box as server serving 3 Win boxes
(Win98, Win ME and Win XP) or I have to converting all of them to Linux
boxes ? Which software recommended would be easily configured and
maintained to be used in the server ?

As for what Dave meant by cached without being
connected - basically if a web page is in cache, Squid
will serve it up even if it is not connected. But I
think he was refering to WWWoffle (I don't know it).

It sounds similarly to certain software in Win environment which can
download the whole website allowing you browsing it off line.

[newbie] Mandrake-Linux 8.1 installation problem

2001-10-28 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi All People,

I tried nearly 2 weeks but still could not solve the installation problem
of Mandrake-Linux 8.1. Detail as follows :

Configuration of the PC for Linux box
CPU AMD K2 350
Hard Disk3.6G ATA-33
RAM 128 MB

ISO Images were download to a Windows ME box with Anti-Virus and all
protection programs closed.

Burning software : Tried both Easy CD Creator 4.0 and 5.0 respectively
Burning speed : Tried 2X, 4X and 8X respectively

md5sum : matched

(Remark : I have Mandrake-Linux 7.2 version also downloadrd the same
Windows ME box and burnt with Easy Cd Creator 4.0 at 4X. The CDs thus
burnt can be installed in the abovementioned Linux Box, running great
without problem)

Installation went through without problem but the PS/2 mouse died after
re-booting. It was alive at time of installation. KDE could be started
after re-booting and worked normally. The mouse was found in HardDrake
under the list. It is a A4 3-button wheel PS/2 mouse. But during
installation I was not allowed to select another mouse, otherwise the PC
would re-start automatically.

During logout (Re-boot/Halt) the PC hanged with following warning ;

/dev/pasux : no such device or address

Mainloop returned consoleInit : nor such device or address
INIT : no more process left in the runlevel

Then the PC hanged.

On terminal window
Type ls -l /dev/misc

It prompted

..
total 0
crw - - - - - - rootamp_bios
crw - r - - - - rootrootpsux
crw - r - - - - rootrootrtc

Any guy on the list has encountered the aforesaid problem previously please
advise.

Thanks in advice.

[newbie] Corrupted files -RPM

2001-10-19 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi All People,

I have downloaded Mandrake-Linux 8.1 ISO Images from Internet to a Windows
PC and burt 3 installation discs with Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.

During installing following files were found corrupted

xmms-kjofol-skins-1.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm
xmms-more-vis-plugins-unsafe-1.4.0-3mdk.i586.rpm
xmms-skins-1.0.0-11mdk.noarch.rpm

I checked RPMNet but could not find them there.

Kindly advise where can I have them downloaded.

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Mandrake 8.1 download problem !!!

2001-10-18 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi, Mohammed Arafa,

(Former known as : [newbie] md5sum problem - What mistake has been
committed ???)

Thanks for your advise. YOU ARE RIGHT !!!

I closed the Anti-Virus program as well as other protection programs of the
PC before I started to download again from a FTP site. Finally it turned
out that the codes (CRC) of the downloaded files were found identical to
the codes in the md5sum file downloaded from the FTP site.

Your discovery is important to us.

Hoping that all guys on the list can read this posting. It will save
hours/days and hours/days of tedious working with zero result.

Subject: [newbie] md5sum problem - What mistake has been committed ???

  Hi All People,

I downloaded following files from Mandrake-Linux ftp mirror site in local
  city where I
reside and kept them in a Mandrake directory in a Windows box :

  Mandrake81-cd1-inst.i586.iso
  Mandrake81-cd2-ext.i586.iso
  Mandrake81-cd3-supp.i586.iso

  and renamed them as :
  CD1-INST.ISO
  CD2-EXT.ISO
  CD3-SUPP.ISO

I also downloaded md5sums and README files from the same ftp mirror site
and kept them in another directory

It took about 30 minutes. NOT BAD

Then I downloaded the DOS software md5sum.exe. After checking with an
  Anti-virus program I copied it to C:\Windows\Command

  In DOS-Windows I performed follows :

  C:\Mandrake
  Type md5sum cd1-inst.iso
  3d4679f3c64f41c65e17851cc4164268 *cd1-inst.iso

  C:\Mandrake
  Type md5sum cd2-ext.iso
  1953109b97ff2576d990da918ae6b2bc *cd2-ext.iso

  C:\Mandrake\
  Type md5sum cd3-supp.iso
  92e4c118d64f22f134841e4254ec4b7b *cd3-supp.iso

I opened the md5sums file downloaded from the mirror site and found the
CRC
  as follows :
  146e585fc46463cb911fd7ac28e6ed69 Mandrake81-cd1-inst.i586.iso
  5876d473593db386bf54c612fd5dfb7b Mandrake81-cd2-ext.i586.iso
  598a606c69859d732c146bc9299a4de8 Mandrake81-cd3-supp.i586.iso

  They did not match

I repeated the same process by downloading the files twice from the same
ftp mirror site. The result was as follows.

  C:\Mandrake
  Typemd5sum cd1-inst.iso
  cc76b4ad78f6bbb51878cd2d8ae7f476 *cd1-inst.iso

  C:\Mandrake
  Typemd5sum cd2-ext.iso
  5876d473593db386bf54c612fd5dfb7b *cd2-ext.iso

  C:\Mandrake
  Typemd5sum cd3-supp.iso
  a9eca9dbc33aab0a8fc2fb0277b52c95 *cd3-supp.iso

  CRC in md5sums file :
  146e585fc46463cb911fd7ac28e6ed69 Mandrake81-cd1-inst.i586.iso
  5876d473593db386bf54c612fd5dfb7b Mandrake81-cd2-ext.i586.iso
  598a606c69859d732c146bc9299a4de8 Mandrake81-cd3-supp.i586.iso

The CRC of cd2-ext.iso was found identical.

What is wrong ??? Did I make any mistake ???

Re: [newbie] Kernel Panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05 problem

2001-10-04 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Sridhar

Lot of thanks for your response and time spent.

Both /boot and /root are in Ext2. I also tried with
only /root partition in Ext2 and the result was the same.

Still I could not understand what mistake I have committed. Linux-Mandrake
7.2 runs great in the same PC and Hard disc.

I was a little bid tire of trying Linux-Mandrake 8.0 continuously without
any result. Then I turned to Linux-Mandrake 8.1. Having its ISO images
download from the website I started installation with CD thus prepared. It
went through smoothly and the mouse was alive. However after re-starting
the mouse die.

I started /configuration/hardware/HardDrake. All devices on its window did
not show any description including the mouse. I attempted to evoke the
file on the menu bar, such as File, Options, Tools and Help but without
response. I tried Ctrl/Alt/Shift and f/i/l/e combination
key. Unfortunately it did not work.

I logout and re-started the PC. During exiting follow error messages pop-up

- /dev/psaux : No such device or address
- Link error messages pop-up ………
…
- Mainloop returned Console Init : No such device or address
- INIT : no more process left in this runlevel

The PC hanged on forcing me to re-boot the PC

No improvement made after re-starting. I tried twice re-installing
Linnux-Mandrake 8.1 with the same result

Could any guy on the list shed me some light. Thanks in advance.

More likely, it is some kind of incompatibility with your system. I have a
feeling that the problem is due to ReiserFS. Try making only Ext2
partitions and
see what happens. Alternatively (and even better), you should try installing
Mandrake 8.1.

  - Native partition for /boot 5 MB
  - Swap 260 MB (2 x 128 MB RAM)
  - Rest for root partition

Each time after installation completed and re-starting, following warning
  message prompts:

Kernel Panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

I even tried installing Mandrake 7.2 first. After it worked successfully,
then I installed/upgraded it to Mandrake 8.0. But I still could not get

a. Input/Output Range 01F0 - 01F7
b. Input/Output Range 03F6 - 03F6
c. Interrupt Request 14
d. Input/Output Range 0170 - 0177
e. Input/Output Range 0376 - 0376
f. Interrupt Request 15
g. Input/Output Range F000 - F000F

Is it to make following changes :

linux ide2 = 01F0-01F7, 03F8-03F8ide3 = 0170-0177, 0378-0378

Whether the formula ide2=a, (b+2) ide3=c (d+2) are still applicable ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] can 't install on ASUS A7V133

2001-03-12 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Dan,

Kindly advise :

Use the standard IDE interfaces for now. Apparently there is a way to
make it work on 7.2 but even so it's still "buggy".

Is it using IDE cable for ATA33/ATA66 to connect the ATA100 hard disc first
before installation ?

Try installing your O/S using the stabdard interface, and then switching
to the ata100 interface afterwards.

Is it after installing Mandrake 7.2 then changing the IDE (ATA33/ATA66)
cable to ATA100 cable ?

Can Linux ran properly afterwards

Thanks in advance.

With primary ata100 cable connected to both hd's 7.2 won't install, and
8.0 only gets half way thru the second disk. Does anyone have any
experience with this board?
