Re: [newbie] Charset

1999-09-15 Thread Wayne Boaz

On my machine this caused the .xsession-errors file to fill my hard drive in
3 days. I had to update my kernel from 2.2.9-19 to 2.2.9-27. I used krpm to
do that and linuxconf to modify lilo to point to the new kernel. In krpm
uncheck all the install boxes (overwrite files, update,...) and you will
have both kernels available.

Someone told my that this was the "error spew" bug or something like that.

The latest version of pump is also supposed to support the -h parameter. As
usual the man page has no concrete examples and I haven't been able to
figure it out. I used the dhcpcd settings (mods) found here,

for the permanent settings available here:

I am not sure how your setup works, but for Rogers@home everyone is
assigned a client id and in order to setup the network you need to run
dhcpcd -h (put client id here). That is, you need to specify your
 computer name.

Nope. When you set up your mouse originally, did you choose
"Microsoft Intellimouse"? That's an option in Mandrake 6.
It works fine for a "paste." However, it doesn't scroll or
anything. I suspect that if you didn't select "MS
Intellimouse" (or whatever it's called) you will find that
IMWHEEL doesn't work... :-)

No I set it for a PS2 Mouse. Its a Logitech mouse so I didn't think

[newbie] Java and Star Office

1999-09-05 Thread Wayne Boaz

Where do I:
1) Find a Java distribution that will support Start Office so that I can get
more than 1 minute into the install without canceling?
2) Find decent instruction on setting up it's environment? (the how-to docs
are sure good at talking around the edges of a problem and letting those
unfamiliar with a proper environment make a lot of guesses!)

rant
I installed the RPM of kaffee but as usual the RPM is missing ALL of the
documentation referenced in it's own file list! If Linux is ever going to
make a dent in the Windows world it needs to have complete documentation
with examples that work. I shouldn't have to sacrifice a chicken, divine the
instructions from the tossed and jumbled bones and spend hours decoding
glyphs from a FAQ stored on a site with a 2400 baud connection to the
internet!!

Re: [newbie] Electrical Power Dead, then Linux (X) is dead too ?

1999-09-05 Thread Wayne Boaz

You just try to get some computer hardware through foreign customs sometime!
The import tax can be more than the cost of the item and it can sit in
customs for months! If someone has an exclusive distributors right in a
country the hardware/software may be returned postage due (if you are lucky)
or impounded (never to be seen again).

The point poor Rib is trying to make is that Linux should be able to survive
a power outage and a fsck. I know my Banyan servers can! Linux should be
able to as well!

Temporarily try generic driver with VGA 16 server. If you're getting a
graphical interface for XF86Setup this temporary fix should work. Of
course
you'll only get 16 color (NS looks really bizarre), but it'll allow you to
utilize the GUI while you search for a more long term solution.

Re: [newbie] Not getting anywhere!!

1999-08-19 Thread Wayne Boaz

My AWE64 card was not identified properly either. I ran a report from my
Win98 side on all my devices, set it to the Win98 identified DMA channels
and it worked. To get a report (I am assuming you are dual boot and could be
wrong) right click 'My Computer', select 'Properties', select the 'Device
Manager' tab and then the 'Print' button on the bottom right. Select the
'All devices and system summary' radio button and 'OK'. This resolved an
issue with both my PnP network card and my AWE64 card.

I hope this helps,

[newbie] Changing the default X windows color depth.

 - PCI Matrox Millennium II card with 4 megs of ram
 - PCI Voodoo2 card with 8 megs of ram

I got the Voodoo2 drivers installed last night but that was no help. I have
manually started the X server in 16bpp color mode but I can't cycle up to
16bpp colors from 8bpp with ctrlalt+. I need 16bpp to run Quake3.

Is there an init file I can edit to add the '-- -bpp 16' settings to? I've

 You need to edit /etc/x11/XF86Config.

Towards the end you will see something like
 Section "Screen"
 Driver "Accel"
 Device "Primary Card"
Monitor ... so on and so forth..

 Look for the line
 DefaultColorDepth 8

 Change it to 16..

 Save it..

 Shutdown, reboot.

You must be root to do this, so do it thru a terminal as su
or use KDE's file manager, in which you must log in as root to use.
