[newbie] Emoticons etc. In Thunderbird
Until I recently lost my Thunderbird installation I had a tool bar which I assume I had downloaded as a theme. This had features such as a facility to change fonts, underline text, add graphical emoticons and so on. For the life of me I cannot remember where I got it and wonder if any Thunderbird users recognise this feature and can point me into the right direction. Of course I have searched for it but it seems to be fairly elusive. You shouldn't be usin cooker without also monitoring the cooker ML, changelog, and bugzilla as a minimum. Anyhow, Your right, this is my first beta install. I don't yet know about the cooker ML. I'll go find it now and get subscribed. My immediate problem is that /dev/dsp is missing. Don't know what happened to it but I'll try your suggestions and see if I can get it back. I am trying to update my dns settings. I change the server ip through webmin but they don´t ¨stick¨ When i go back into the dns client screen again it did not save the settings. good day all. For the newbie question of the year. I want to run a program (updatedd-wrapper) ¨a program that updates a ip adress on a dns server¨ whenever i start my pc. How can I check the integrity of my disk and it's partition? Is there another product (linux based) that I can use instead of Ghost (bear in mind it has two ntfs partitions on it as well. Partimage is a linux clone of Partition Magic, Paragon Hard Drive manager and other types of partition manager tools. One really good way to handle this is to download a copy of System Rescue Live CD from http://sysresccd.org burn the ISO to CD and boot up using the CD. That way, none of the hard drive partitions start out as active and you should be able to copy all the partitions from one hard drive directly to the next hard drive, intact and then just boot from either one after it is connected at the same physical location. I am using konquerer to move stuff from one hard disk to another. Konquerer reports on 2.5MB/s. Shouldn´t this be faster? Seems very slow to me. [newbie] Stuck on a network problem
Here I run a simple network with three machines - two running Mandrake 10.0 and one running Windows. The second Linux machine operates as a server on which I back up files from the other two. Currently the server has a monitor, keyboard and mouse but I would like to run it as a straight forward ftp server with just a system unit. Therefore I need to be able to switch it off remotely as the only way until recently was to use its local controls. I have installed VNC on both the Linux machines which I can use to switch off the server but have to set up VNC each time on the remote machine as I lose the settings when that machine is shutdown. How can I set up VNC, and its password, so that it starts when the server is booted and therefore allows me to remove monitor, keyboard and mouse from that particular machine. Good day all I am having a problem with my network! After about two or three hours of linux being up I can't speak to my linux box from another machine, or from another machine to my linux box. What I have noticed is that when i try and ping a box from linux it reports an error connect: no buffer space available. Can anybody tell me what this means? Is there a way I can set my hard disks to use 32 bit access as a defualt. They are currently using 16 bit. I use hdparm -c1 /dev/hd? to set this but the changes don't appear to be perminent. Thanks. What ris does is allow you to boot from a network card and install windows 2000 and windows XP. The nice things is it an unattended installation and it installs quicker than from a cd. The reason I want to do this is that I sell a lot of pc's where clients want WINXP installed and it is quicker for me to install this way around, as you can do 5 pc's at a time (IF needed) I hear red hat had something that does this. I am just trying to find out if it is the same thing, or will I have to stick to windows server versions. Could convert /windows/e to ext 3 after cleaning it out. If large enough you could save your /home dir with rsync (need a script just ask) to it daily or just before logging off. If it is larger than your excisting /home dir/partition you could move your home partiton to this after doing the neccessary before logging off. It is impossible to change the permissions of a file on a fat32 partition for the simple reason that fat32 has no concept of file 'attributes'. All we can do is 'spoof' the permissions of every file on the partition when it is mounted. This is achieved with the 'umask' option in the appropriate line in /etc/fstab Setting umask=0 will force all files to have 777 permission. Yesterday I did a routine urpmi update - security, bugs and normal updates but did not make a note of the programs to be updated. I suppose about 30 programs in all were affected. However, everything appeared to install correctly and the update list is now empty, but the next time I fired up KDE I found ALL my KDE fonts had changed - including Kmail. Resetting everything manually took about half an hour and all seems (more or less) ok now. Has anyone else experienced this, what is the reason and how do we avoid it in future? [newbie] Kmail problem
I need a little help, please, in setting up Kmail again. A couple of days ago I added a Smart Media card reader to one of my USB ports and (I assume a bug in the driver) as a result the machine would not then boot. Later the USB driver was updated and I noted that a bug had in fact been corrected. The start up problem was then sorted using Mandake 10's CDs to upgrade the OS and then all was well except that previously I had been able to fire up a URL within Kmail and now cannot do so. I don't remember having to do anything previously to create a link here (I think to Konqueror) and cannot find anything to help in the help files. I imagine the problem is very simple and basic but it is also proving frustrating and annoying. Any help would be much appreciated. Like others on this list running Mandrake 10.0, I had a few problems with Kuickshow - there is a bug in Qt and I could not get Qt3.3 going. However I have come across a very similar picturefile viewer called Gwenview which seems to do most of the things that Kuickshow does and although it appears to have been developed for 9.2, it does work well with Mandrake 10.0. I am running on a ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe board with a hard disk on primary slave, a dvd and CDRW on Secondary master and slave, two more SATA drives on ICH5R and all is well. Except the two drives on the promise PATA controller. Mandrake sees the controller but doesn't detect the drives. Windows works fine and everyone is happy. Does anybody have any suggestion on how to see my other two drives? I asked this question a few days ago but got no replies. I'm not sure if that's because there were no replies or a list problem (for about 24 hrs I got no mail in the newbie list and only a trickle from expert when I would have seen any replies). have installed mandrake linux a few times starting with 9.0 about a year ago. One problem I have had that I can't seem to figure out is how to display graphics characters. If any of you guys call any dial-up (if there are any left) or telnet BBSs you'll know what I mean. Can anyone give me any insight? In the meantime someone told me to try adding echo -en \033(U to my bash_profile and that has worked when I'm using one of the CTRL ALT F? consoles but I would like to make that work in Konsole so I can just open Konsole from the desktop. Power management is working like a charm ( for a change ! ), even though it has never worked properly for me in Windows - not even on conventional PC's ! I ordered my D1 with a P4-2.4 Ghz CPU, 512 Mb DDR Ram, and a 40 Gb drive. Assembly took less than 30 minutes, and the O/S installed without a hitch. By assembling it myself, I even saved another $40.00 ! Not including taxes, this laptop cost me $1400.00 Canadian, and so far it's the best money I've ever spent. Time will tell, but I can't believe how easy it was. Check it out folks. It might be what you're looking for in a laptop. Lanman Have you tried the touchpad? Mdk picked up my optical wheelmouse and the touchpad both without a complaint. They both work automagically. If the mouse isn't plugged in (on the road again) the touchpad works then too. Yesterday (I think) a message was posted about an error message he was receiving about his disks not being read. Unfortunately I cannot now find it but it related to a bug in Mandrake 9.1's kernel. However, the more general point I would like to make is if one posts an error message into Google and does a search on it, then the problem and (hopefully) solution have been posted by others who have come across it before. It works for Windows also of course. This has saved me a lot of head scratching in the past and it might be of some use to others. This is caused by a bug in the kernel - if you enter the full error message in Google and search on it, you will get a range of answers to the problem. This was a problem for me until installing 9.2. So far as I know, it never caused any difficulties with any programs I was then running. Sorry but I didn't answer your question properly. I have been dabbling a little and I am working on adding in some of the plugins and companion software also using WINE. The linux version works well also and I use gVim to edit the .pov scripts as it highlights the keywords and such. Typically, wineX installs a .transgaming folder in your home directory which has a symbolic link called Transgaming_drive also in your home directory. All I have done in the past is to go into that directory and find where I installed the program and delete the directory, like this: cd Transgaming_drive/Program\ Files/ rm -rf Max\ Payne Just an example, mind you. Angus, If you have a copy of Dreamweaver, you can get it to run under Linux. Check out http://www.frankscorner.org/wine/ to see how to get several apps to run under wine, including Flash and Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver's code is pretty clean, but there is no substitute for knowing HTML and coding it your way in a text editor. I use Quanta, Bluefish and Screem also under Linux when I don't remember the tags, but 9 times out of 10, I'm using gvim for the nice syntax highlighting features. I've never tried the install with wine, but I have other apps working under wine and Frank's site has been a good reference. [newbie] Adaptec 1200 ide raid controller.....problem
I have two western digital 60 gig drives. Both were working fine on the onboard controller. I installed an Adaptec 1200 raid controller. At first I couldn't even get to the lilo. Once I went into the raid setup and setup the drives, it booted to the lilo screen. Linux starts to boot, but hangs with this message... kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-3, errno=z mount error 6 ext3 flags mounted devfs on /dev Then I get a kernal panic and it stops loading.
