[newbie] Adobe Acrobat install
Has anyone using Mandrake 9.2 succeeded in installing Adobe Acrobat Reader. Somehow the linux-ar-405.tar.gz program has defeated everything I've tried. Michael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Restoring Gui login Mandrake9.2
During the install I mistakenly clicked on the automatic login feature which takes me directly into KDE. Is there a file I could edit that would return the choice of window managers at bootup? Michael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Library Compatibility
In my quest to get WP8 installed on LM8 (it worked wonderfully on LM7.1) I discover that there were libraries (libc5) used that are no longer used in this newer Mandrake. But are older libraries compatible with newer ones? If not, then I guess it is not possible to reinstall WP8 into this newer version of Mandrake. [newbie] WordPerfect8 Mandrake 8
Since installing Mandrake8 I cannot get WP8 for Linux to install. Is it probable that the newer Mandrake version has dropped certain files necessary for WP8? Michael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Print problem
Paul, When I run that command I get the message: Command unknown. Michael Coady You may want to run lpstat -a and see what printer is set up as the default printer. Paul
[newbie] Print command
With Mandrake 7 when I try to print a specific file with the lpr command I get the message: printer unknown. Yet the installed printer - a HP Laserjet 4L - prints just fine within WordPerfect. And the command # printtool reveals that that printer is operating at lp0. Is there some further configuration I have to do to get the lpr command to work? Thanks for any suggestions. Michael Coady
[newbie] Midi Module failure
For the longest time i get the following notice on boot up of my Mandrake 7.0: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/opl3.0 failed loading midi module opl2 failed. It mustn't be a critical part of my system as everything I need runs ok. But I was wondering what I might do so that the boot up sequence doesn't look for that module. Any suggestion appreciated. [newbie] Shiptrak
Is there a linux command, similar to shiptrak (I think) which one invokes when about to move a computer physically. This is a command to stabilize the reading head on the harddrive. Michael Coady -- M.
[newbie] shiptrak
There was a command in Dos that stabilized the reading head on the hard drive when you were going to physcially move the computer. I think it was shiptrak. Is there a similar command in Linux for this operation? Michael Coady
Re: [newbie] smtpdaemon
First thanks to Michael, Phil, Alexander and Vic for replying to my mail problem. Second, an apology for a basic error. It is not Sendmail that is causing me grief, (as I indicated) it's FETCHMAIL. And for some reason, when I try to install it, I get the message that I need "smtpdaemon" before I can rpm it. I can see that there is a FETCHMAIL.CONF rpm too that should assist in installing the program. However, I have to get past this dependency problem. Very sorry about the misleading information. [newbie] Install bug 7.1
Tried to install 7.1 but didn't get passed "initializing CDrom" before the deadly "Transsocket" message appeared. (Am using SiS 6326 card). And yet, Mandrake 6 worked well on my machine. Tried the "Linux text" entry but got lost. Somewhere I read there is a bug in the graphic install mode on this version and that there is a patch or something to get around it. Could someone direct me to where this patch resides. Many thanks. Michael Coady M.

[newbie] Zip Drive kernel
Although I can operate my internal ATAPI-IDE Zip drive, at boot up I get the message "fs type not supported by kernel". I found this instruction somewhere about doing something to the kernel in configuring it to recognize the drive. "Do _not_ use the "IDE FLOPPY" option (officially the name is CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY ). This will work perfectly for reading and writing, but it will not work for ejecting. What you need to do is say yes to the option CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI. When this is set, you will treat the IDE ATAPI drive just like a SCSI drive, except without the SCSI card and all that other garbage.." Would anyone know what command/program I must run in order to access the above mentioned options? Am running Mandrake 6. Michael Coady
Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION (Documentation)
I fully support the recommendation submitted by Edison Gica. If the talented people at Linux-Mandrake would put intelligible documentation on-line regarding the installing and tailoring of each new release, at least we would have a common point of departure in our quest for solutions. A further advantage might be that the on-line documentation could be updated as other common problems surface on lists such as this. Michael Coady On Thu, 25 May 2000, Edison Gica wrote: I have not yet installed 7.0 coz I'm still reading the stuff on installation. My comment is in the documentation (Installation Manual). It only explains or presumes that the user has only one hard disk and that if the option 'Custom' or 'Expert' is installed it is again presumed that the user knows what to do. Now in my case, I have 2 hard disks and found out from the demos in the web that I have to go to either 'Custom' or 'Expert' installation to be able to install 7.0 in my second hard disk w/c I want to do. I'm a newbie (obviously :) ) and if I have not read those I would have accidentally used the 'Normal' installation and it would go and shrink my Win partition (!) w/c I would not want to happen. A well organized installation procedure posted in the web site would be great if printing a bulky manual is not considered economical. Thanks for letting us users give feedback. Hey, this is one great way to compete with MS so this should be done more often. No sleep guys :D edison
Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION (Documentation)
Yes, as some have already suggested, there is a great need for better documentation as Mandrake issues new releases. Could the very talented people working behind Linux-Mandrake create on on-line manual regarding the installation/tailoring of their product. Being an on-line document, it could be updated in response to problems submitted on lists such as this. Plus, it would provide a common, one-stop location for information that would not have to be repeated endlessly on a list. Linux is a learning system that presumes the user in internet savvy because that is where most of its mysteries are discussed. What the user needs is not heavier tomes in a bookstore, but clearer, comprehensive, cup-to-date yet accessible documentation on-line. Michael Coady

[newbie] re Zip Drive
Thanks to Ron and Eric for great assistance in getting the Zip drive working. I see that this 100 meg. disk has 12 blockgroups. When I tried to tar my /home directory onto the Zip drive it stopped after using only one block. Consequently there was not enough space to archive the whole directory .. Is there a way to combine some blocks on the Zip disk to accomodate the archiving I wish to do? Michael Coady

[newbie] Installing Zip drive on Mandrake 6
Any instructions I read about getting my IDE ATAPI Zip drive up and running, keep referring to a /usr/src/linux directory from within which I'm supposed to make some module change to the kernel. Problem is that there is no such directory. Any suggestions much appreciated. Michael Coady.

[newbie] Any way back in?
I made a change to my XF86Config file which I realized was a mistake when I rebooted the system. I had Lilo set to automatically take me into graphic mode (runlevel 5) and now I can't read a thing and therefore can't repair my mistake. . Is there a way at the Lilo prompt to override that default and simply get in at a log in command? Or am I doomed to lose most recent files and re-install? Thanks for any help. Michael Coady M.

[newbie] Mandrake 7 slowdown
Thanks John and Paul for the suggestions. My swap partition ( 64 meg) seems adequate as it was before. I ran "setup" and removed a few non-relevant programs with no significant improvement. I guess I'll have to live with the more leisurely pace or else switch to a less memory-demanding desktop. To see what stuff is loaded on boot, you run setup as root, and in the "system services" you can select what will be loaded and omitted. make sure you don't kick out important stuff!!
