[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hmmm... How did the install fail? SNF has a newer 2.2 kernel than the original and the newer one overcomes some errors that could be attributed to the strange timing and unique geometry of some WD drives. There is no real reason an SNF install should fail on such a system. I am running it on an IBM PC350 P166 with 32Mb of RAM and two network cards. Of course, I do have to keep a mouse attached so the BIOS will allow a boot, but the video and keyboard were long ago removed. You cannot have any other system on a machine running SNF. Dual-boots are impossible. When I'm about to install SNF in my old Intel Pentium 166 at 32MB RAM using BTC 40x IDE CD-ROM drive it asked me what modules shall I use for my CD-ROM drive? Re: [newbie] Kernel upgrade problem
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well you don't update newer kernels, you _install_ them. Download and rpm -ivh kernelname The name is different so it will install alongside the older kernel and be bootable. Updating usually leaves you with a new kernel and modules compiled for an older one, which is a sad situation. Yeah, I know that. But basically, if I succeed in installing my new kernel-2.4.18 over my default kernel-2.4.8 of Mandrake 8.1, it would also be called an upgrade 'cause I won't use my old kernel anymore. Going back with my problem, anybody knows how to upgrade a newer kernel version using XFS (/usr, /home, /etc, /opt, etc...) and ext2 (/boot and /) filesystems and would you mind to give me your how-to's? [newbie] Error messages during shutting down
Hello everybody! =) I'm currently using Mandrake 8.1 on Asus CUVR4X-C motherboard, Intel Pentium III 800 Mhz, 384 MB SDRAM and 20 GB Seagate Barraccuda 7200 RPM hard disk drive. My problem started when I successfully installed kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm in my Mandrake 8.1 system. As most (if not all) of you know, Mandrake 8.1 has a default kernel version of 2.4.8. Basically, I did upgrade my default kernel. I installed my new kernel version using the command of: # rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm Also, my partitions and filesystems are: /boot - ext2fs /usr - XFS /home - XFS /opt - XFS /var - XFS swap / - ext2fs ...and I also add lines in my LILO for my new kernel to boot-up. Actually, I am encountering error messages during shutting down my system. Below are the error messages that are displayed during shutdown: /etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line -76: 5401 segmentation fault $* What does the error messages mean? How will I get over it? So far, I haven't encountered any problems yet using my new kernel 2.4.16.9 installed except for the error messages during shutting down. Re: [newbie] The problem with Linux
Naa, windows is a dying OS that will never be. On Saturday 24 November 2001 08:26 pm, Andrew Scotchmer wrote: Hi all, About 16 months ago I was using Linux 100%. By that I mean that there was no other operating system to be found on my hard drive. Unfortunatly I had to reinstall Windows as I needed the Macromedia software which, as you will all know, deleted my Linux partition and I became a drone to microsoft. A few weeks ago however I installed Linux once again and although I am still stuck with windows for a few applications, Linux has once again become my main choice of operating system. However in saying this there are a few concerns I would like to make. There is nothing I would like to see than Linux becoming the main OS on the PC market. I wish it well and hope that it's popularity grows from strength to strength in the future. Unfortunatly after my vacation into the world of windows I have to admit I doubt that such a dream will become a reality. This I beleave, is because of the many distro's that are currently on the market each competing for a bit of the pie. Unless there is a standardisation in the Linux world we will not attract the home user in any significant number. For instance, why is windows so popular and the number 1 OS around? Not because it is the best but because it is consistant. For example, I run windows 98 as do many others. I know the system and how to work it and I know that the software I want to run wil be compatable with it. If I have a problem I can ask a friend who may know the answer or may know others that do because we all run the same OS and are comfortable with it as it has remained unchanged now for a few years. Now lets look at Linux. I run Suse 7.2 which although similar to Mandrake 8.1 is also very different. What works on my system may not do so on another vendors distro. Many times have I tried to install the lastest piece of software only to discover that this library file was missing or such a file needs updating and I have to go hunting the internet for the needed file in order to run the program. My point is that until Linux becomes more standardised and unified then it will never overtake the windows OS. Although Microsoft is slagged a lot (and rightly so) at least each version of it's OS is around long enough for people to become familiar with it and know what it can do without the hassle of constant upgrades or installations. Although I have only had my distro for a few weeks already there is a stream of updates that I am told needs to be downloaded if I what to stay up to date. Why can we not have a unification of the distros. Granted each will vary slightly but the main OS will remain the same thus allowing users to become familiar with it before it becomes out of date and an upgrade is needed for some software. This may also encourage software manufacturers to produce drivers and programs for Linux because they know what they are dealing with, what the people are using and that it will remain so for the next year or so as with windows. Sorry if this has gone on a bit and I apologise for any uncertainty in my message (I am not a brilliant writer) but I do feel that the many distro's that are available is actually hindering the progress of this marvelous OS and that they are the reason for it's failure in attracting newcomers. Why can they not just all sit round a table and decide that this is the kernal for the next year or two and this is what we will do with it. Or is there more similarities with microsoft than they care to admit in that they only care for the money and the prestige of being the most popular. Come on guy's this is open source, this is a community that exist beyond the realms of finance. it is about sharing and unity. Andrew Scotchmer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Linux Mandrake vs Linux Suse
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Generally speaking I am thinking that US is not that strong on Linux market. RedHat is of course an american company but it looks that is not that popular as these two distributions. I don't have any comments about this. Sorry. If I would like to compare two distributions(see Mandrake vs Suse) which should be the criteria ? Can we say that Mandrake is more user firendly than Suse ? or Suse is faster than Mandrake ? Are out there some clear outlined criteria on comparing these Linux distributions ? I don't have any comments about this 'cause I wasn't able to use Suse in the first place. The reason is that I am a developer currently working on Microsoft platform but I intend to enlarge my skill set and knowledge with Java. For me Java has a bright future on Linux and this makes me to focus on Java development. Good for you. At the moment I need a good distribution to stick to, let's say... . I had the feeling that Suse is a more solid Linux distro, a more Server and development focused. I may be wrong thinking in this way, but this is the feeling which I have. Well, it depends on how you configure your box. There's no such thing as best distro. I think will not be bad for Mandrake to include in its distro more support for developers and especially for Java. I suggest that the following things should be included on further Mandrake distros: 1. Java JDK 2. Java JRE 3. Most Java Application Servers -- Jboss, Orion, etc 4. Java IDE such as: JBuilder, IBM VisualAge, etc 5. Borland's Kylix 6. Other IDE and tools which may be of interest for developers. That's actually a good suggestion but I don't think they will. Those packages that you mentioned are not Open Source and basically, I don't think Sun, Borland, etc. will just permit Mandrake without this so-called partnership. Just like what Suse and Oracle did. Many of the tools presented above are open source or could be easily included on Mandrake's cds distro. I don't think so. As I've mentioned, those softwares are NOT Open Source, AFAIK. Besides, as what I've said, it is not that easy to include those softwares in their (Mandrake) next version 'cause it needs the permission of the companies' concerned. If that's the case, Mandrake should include StarOffice also or probably OpenOffice. Keep cool! =) __ www.edsamail.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] [ OT ] Recommended AMD Athlon 1.x Motherboard
Sorry for this OT. Anyway, I would like to ask your opinion to what Socket A Motherboard for AMD Athlon 1.x Ghz would you like to recommend to me? I am planning to build my all-in-one server for my small Internet cafe. Also, what UPS is good for this kind of server would you like to recommend to me? By the way, I am planning to install Linux Mandrake 8.1 in that server and probably I'll make it also as the Linux Terminal Server http://www.ltsp.org/, that is if I can make it. Which software recommended would be easily configured and maintained to be used in the server ? You don't need to convert your Win boxes to Linux. I assumed that your Win and Linux boxes are well-configured on their individual IP addresses. In short they communicate each other. You just need to install NFS, Samba, OpenSSH to your Linux box and Putty to your Win boxes. HTH. __ www.edsamail.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Problem with Xine 0.9.2
Hello, I just downloaded the xine packages of lib and ui version 0.9.2. I made a directory for xine at /usr/share/xine and ui is under the lib directory. In short, the path is: for lib: /usr/share/xine/lib for ui: /usr/share/xine/lib/ui I followed the xine installation how-to that lib should be compiled first before ui. I ./configure, make, make install successfully on my lib but when I start to make my ui, the lib PATH wasn't able to recognized/find by ui. But I already set the PATH for the lib. Have you encountered this problem before? If it's okay with you, could you please tell me what is the step by step how to build my xine package? BTW, I also want to delete some of my PATH patterns but I already forgot how I did this before. Could you please tell me how? Any help will be much appreciated. So how do you get ahold of the software in the first place if it only lasts for 30 days? I would not pay twice for it. There is no activation scheme when using RH. And for that matter, even though you have to activate WinXP you do have 30 days to do so before it will shut down. Once activated you can upgrade any component within a 120 day period as long as you do not cross a certain threshold (i.e. replacing everything at once). So yes you can upgrade your RAM and HD both at the same time or RAM and Video card or HD and CPU without triggering a re-activation, and thats all that happens. A re-activation is triggered and the OS will then function again. If no major upgrading is done within 120 days XP resets itself meaning you could (but not legally) install WinXP on two different computers if you bothered to wait 120 days between installs. Now, can we stop the OS bashing please? Other than that it is incredibly solid - I've written large documents on it over the period of a week (i.e. open the entire time) and it never crashed on me. OpenOffice.org (that's its official name, since somebody has already copyrighted OpenOffice) is shaping up to be a fine successor to StarOffice 5.2. I've always preferred StarOffice to MS Word, and OpenOffice.org is even better. Release 638C has some stability problems, but otherwise it is almost complete. Most importantly, it is actually usable. While it is bloated, I assume that this is because it is still in development. Hi there! =) I'm just new to this mailing list and I hope you can help me with my problem. Re: [newbie] SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.i586.rpm appears broken
Ok many thanks, I might try looking for a new sound editor, this one appears to be too much trouble than it is worth. Someone told me I should try audacity, and I am testitning it out right now, seems like its decent, no fancy mixing sound on sound yet I think but its good enough for now. On Monday 22 October 2001 11:07 am, Jose M. Sanchez wrote: Heh, it helps if you are in the same directory that contains the SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.i586.rpm file before you execute that command. The rpm command could not find the file, resulting in the error. I could not locate an i586 version of that file on RPMFIND (which I looked for after reading your message below). Nor could I find an MDK version for anything but the Sparc. Ideally you want to use MDK RPM's to avoid problems with other software on your MDK system. In turn if you are downloading a cooker file on a stock 8.x LM install, it's a good idea to try to recompiling, instead of installing from a binary. Though this may not always work. Recompiling rebuilds the i586.rpm file based upon files and libraries already installed in your system. (E.G. rpm --rebuild SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.src.rpm after downloading that file... The resulting file will be located in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 or /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686 ) When it works, you end up with a NEW rpm that is more highly compatible with your existing installation. Note however that cooker RPM's in turn often rely on other libraries programs which may not already be installed in your system. You can actually get into a vicious cycle of upgrades by trying to utilize cooker (and other) RPM's which supercede releases for your system. At best, things will work, at worst you may end up with a highly unstable system. For Ex-Winblows people, using cooker releases is somewhat akin to trying to run software under WinME, written for WindowsXP. Not a good idea, especially on an important system. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Newbie |Sent: Monday, October 22, 2001 10:05 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [newbie] SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.i586.rpm appears broken | | |Ok I got it from rpmfind.net it says: | | |[root@kittypuss Production]# rpm -qlf |SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.i586.rpm | more |error: file SoundStudio-1.0.3-5.i586.rpm: No such file or |directory [root@kittypuss Production]# | |On Friday 19 October 2001 04:33 pm, Jose M.
