Re: COMMUNITY: Re: [newbie] Support? - a Solution ?

I like this idea. Many times I can't read with attention all the mail, so
in that case I could need to cut away things I can't follow.

Hallo, it won't help you but however I send it.
I posted the same question some days ago and folks answered me:
NO, they think that write to ntfs in mandrake 8.1 is disabled for safety
YES, they think that you can write if you really want but you have to
modify your kernel
the discussion wento no further.

I think umask=0 means you can aceess as normal user, otherwise
filesystem would be mounted as root and viewed only by root. following 0
0 should be about dumping and checking filesystem.
if you want to know more :
of course, you can find full technical explainations opening a console
and typing "man mount" and "man fstab".
Or, you can go to mandrakeonline, and then to mandrakeuser web sites
(more easy).

thanks Miark, in fact sometimes I waste time to change things that are
already working-
"when it works don't touch it" is always a good idea and often time-saving.
On the other side I sometimes look for gui for me, who am lazy, and also
to tell my friends that it not only works better, but is more simple and
looks more nice. Bye.

[newbie] agbrowser simple question

2002-03-07 Thread paolo brusasco

hallo. does anyone use agbrowser? I have tried to use it from
distribution mdk 8.1 and also the newest version downloaded, but both
don't start agsatellite (if not running), and say "agsatellite not
running" when agsatellite is running in a console.
the tips I found say that:
I should configure the directories and it should be ok (satellite dir
points to the dir where is agsatellite executable, /home/paolo/agsatellite
agbrowser looks for a (static) executable named "AGSatellite" and the
executable was renamed
I should login to audiogalaxy by a net browser before launching
agbrowser and so i did
is there any trick I miss?
thanks everyone.

I mount my ntfs partition (usin mandrake 8.1, kde), by:
-adding a directory in /mnt/ named /mnt/win2000 (full access permissions)
-adding a line in /etc/fstab like:
/dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 ntfs umask=0 0 0
(where hdb5 is the ntfs partition in my system according to mandrake
control center).
your system should mount ntfs partition at boot. I think you can't
write to it (I posted that question some days ago and it seems you have
to recompile the kernel with experimental options to write to ntfs).

[newbie] mount ntfs partition in read/write mode

2002-02-25 Thread paolo brusasco

hallo everyone. I have a (lot of) question(s) about ntfs.
my system has a ntfs partition crated installing win2000 professional I
can mount only in read mode.
fstab entry is
/dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 ntfs umask=0 0 0
I have also tried with
/dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000 ntfs umask=0,rw 0 0

and then as root i have issued the commands
umount /dev/hdb5
mount -t ntfs -o umask=0,rw /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000
with the result of full read and execute permission, write for none
or
mount -t ntfs -o rw /dev/hdb5 /mnt/win2000
with the result of read, execute only for root (obvious), write for none

I looked in archives and found things like "...ntfs support is
sperimental..." and "...write may be dangerous...";
It may also seem that a full support needs recompiling the kernel (in
this case, I am not ashamed to say that I am too old for these jokes and
I will wait for further relases...)
Or, it may also seem there should be an upgrade ?ntfsfix? buthow can I
know which version of the ntfs access system I have an how can Ifind an
upgrade?

apart from any considerations on the effective risks (that would be
intersting, I mean: what exactly happened to some courageous???), if the
danger is moderate I could afford the risk-my few data are almost all
migrated to lin part;
however win2000 part is still useful for driving a matrox 450 etv card
(looking for a driver in linux), using nero 5.5 and sharing some music.
thanks everyone. paolo brusasco.

I don't know if it can help but for me the only way to make kscd work
was changing the file (home)/.kde/share/config/kscdrc by a text editor
changing the row CDDevice=hda (in my system I connected cd as master
and hd as slave to add a little bit of confusion), in yours should be
hdc of course.
Idem no way to mount cd from kde panel using devices like
/dev/cdanything only way was /dev/hda;
someone said some days ago that a program called xmms-cdread should read
cds via ide digital cable;
someone says it is in 8.1 distribution, someother says it don 't. bye.

I found a cable and connected it and cd works.
I am sorry and apologize but was confused by two facts
- audio cds worked on previous os without cable, this is very confusing
- aux and cd plugs on motherboard are shown in picture but not
listed in components list.
thank everyone (embarrassed)

[newbie] cannot hear cd

2002-01-25 Thread paolo brusasco

I cannot hear cds neither with kscd nor with grip.
I read mails in last days but couldn't find an answer; I'm afraid there
is a little stupid simple thing to do but I tried hard and can't find. I
hope someone can help, thank you for reading this. BYE.
I am trying to listen from an ide 16xdvd-cd on /dev/hda (there is also a
cdrw on /dev/hdd (system set it to /dev/scd0 but to start xcdroast I had
to make changes, this is another long boring story).

1) I can see and access normal data from /dev/hda.
2) I can hear system sounds and .wav files
3) arts volume control is set to max.
4) mixer channels are all not muted (green light on) and volumes set to
max (no way to hear sounds without starting mixer).
5) kscd is configured to device /dev/hda by editing
/home/user/.kde/share/config/kscdrc (no way to change device from inside
kscd, it always ends with error 11 sigsegv); /dev/cdrom doesn't exist on
my sistem;there is /dev/cdroms but kscd set to this doesn' even see the cd.
6) /dev/hda is unmounted
7) entry in /etc/fstab is:
/dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto user,
iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0

I can't understand what does it mean what a fellow wrote some days ago,
that one should look if audio cable is connected from cd to soundcard-I
don't have audio cables or jacks and audio cds work under
windows-i-am-trying-to-leave-but-it-looks-hard.
