I've had similar results with most of those napster-like things. I don't
bother with them anymore, they're too slow. I spend so much time just
waiting for the files to become available.

Here is what I do if I want a "complete Mandrake" via download (yes, one
can join the club and still avoid the hassles of it too =). I download
the 3 DL ISO's, then I make a copy of "Contribs" on the mirrors at the
time of release. I also take a copy of the relevant PLF RPMS as well.
Contribs+PLF add about 2GB worth of extra goodies (I presume are
included in Pro-Suite and PowerPack) and then I have the complete and
current distro all via download. Saves me waiting- and waiting for my
pre-order. Then from there-Cookering to stay current (on unstable
partition) is a breeze...

Cheers

LOL. In my experience, the real doozy is the contrib CD. Most of us

I had a few error's last night, but I just left it and went to bed. This
morning when I got up I had 8 hours left to go.
I was getting more uploaded than downloaded last night but that had
changed by this morning. It is possibly cause it is still newish who
knows. I have used it a few times before on Linux and Windows and had
similar error's on both os's but it does still seem to work. I agree
with others that the speed is not the best. That will hopefully be fixed
in the not to distant future but it does look good for what it is
capable of.

Tony.

That's about another 2 years i.e. upto Mdk-11.2 ;)

I'll still re-up the membership, but it's only a method to support my
favourite distribution. I've never logged into the Club site.

I suppose I'll have to order the box set from the store since the "retail
channels" here in Canada (this part of it anyway) suck vacuum through a
thousand mile long leaky straw.

Who the devil has time for the club?

You should be able to, with some restrictions;

you need a fast enough connection to make it worthwhile,

you need to change the "Path to hdlist/synthesis" to reflect the new tree
you're pulling from.

If you have the space on your system I'd recommend that you ftp the 9.2 tree
(all of it including contrib) from any mirror you can find it on to a local
directory and make a boot floppy or CD using the hd.img from /Mandrake/base.
You can quite likely do a hard drive "upgrade" install that way.

But you're still better off doing it Tom's way. Remember that at the moment
there's very little difference between cooker and 9.2 Canicule anyway.

See the Community Wiki. I believe it's been added there,

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/WebHome

if not it's still on Greg's page at:

http://cybercfo.gkmweb.com/rsync-mandrakeiso.html

It won't do you any good until the ISOs are available on the mirrors that are
set for rsync though.

You can use: ftp://ftp.phys.ttu.edu/pub/mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS for
[urpmi --auto-select] your 9.1-Mandrake.

That's RC2; NOT 9.2. Those ISOs are more than a month old and there are so
many updates between that and current cooker that you may as well just do as
Tom suggests and go for a full cooker upgrade. That would actually involve
less bandwidth than what you're doing.

Or just do a network install from the 9.2 tree on the same machine. Probably
just as fast.

BTW don't toss the ISOs you already have, you can rsync them to the actual
release when it's available on the mirrors.

If you're using RC2, you can just add cooker sources for RPMS and
RPM2 from a cooker mirror and update to
tom $ cat /etc/mandrake-release
Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (Torrent) for i586

A lot less frustrating than bittorrent, and less mb's to d/l too.
Current cooker on the mirrors is 9.2, plus a few updates. 9.1 users
can also use cooker to update to 9.2, just 'urpmi urpmi' first,
then get the rest. Don't be put off by the total number of mb's
urpmi displays. That's installed space, not actual d/l. As a rule
of thumb, the amount you'll be d/l'g is about 40% of the installed
space. Since you're upgrading (ie, replacing packages) there'll be
little to no additional disk space needed. The challenge will be
finding a good mirror. (hint: European mirrors are better)
  http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3

I'm really disappointed 9.2 is available to Club members thru
torrent and not iso's by ftp. Torrent sux! As does any p2p scheme
for big files when getters far outnumber givers. And given the
nature of asyncronous BB connections, givers upload speeds will be
much slower than the getters d/l speeds. Many users will see d/l
speeds slower than dialup, while their own upload speed will be
max'd out. And, after sufferin thru a long slow d/l of the iso's
by torrent, you just might find the md5sums won't check. Another
p2p problem with getting large files from many sources (givers).

If you don't want to update to 9.2 from cooker mirrors, then
about the only viable way to get the iso's is to wait till the end
of this month when the iso's should be available by ftp, after the
boxed sets are shipping. I agree and support Mandrake doin this,
I'm just very disappointed it's currently by bittorrent.
