[newbie] cannot su to root
Since I installed Mandrake 10.1 Community, I can no longer su to root on the Desktop. I still can in a virtual terminal. I thought this had to do with PAM, so I added my user to the wheel-group, but to no relief. ~ $ cat /etc/pam.d/su #%PAM-1.0 auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so # Uncomment the following line to implicitly trust users in the wheel group. #auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_wheel.so trust use_uid # Uncomment the following line to require a user to be in the wheel group. #auth required/lib/security/pam_wheel.so use_uid auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth accountrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth sessionoptional /lib/security/pam_xauth.so If I uncomment this line #auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_wheel.so trust use_uid then the user doing su immediately gets Incorrect password. uncommenting this line doesn't make any difference #auth required/lib/security/pam_wheel.so use_uid Incorrect password with both I thought these lines were commented out by default, so I didn't had to put the user in the wheel group in the first place. Re: [newbie] Cannot su
I just ran into this same problem. While I see that the C+A+F1-4 keys will work log in as root, it is inconvenient to not be able to browse through X. If there is no work around to be able to log in as root via X and use X, would anybody know what setting I choose in InteractiveBastille to revert this security feature? I did recently have a play with InteractiveBastille, but I'm not sure whether that caused it. Any enlightenment appreciated.
Re: [newbie] Cannot su
Hi This question was posed some months back and this was the solution given by Civileme. Open a terminal $ su password:(type the root password) # kedit /etc/security/limits.conf last line--change to something like 40 save quit When implementing Bastille, it is important to read as you go and do it step-by-step. Bastille is a great teaching tool for security if you interact with it, but is not so hot at preconfigured settings. Re: [newbie] Cannot su
Hugh, This sounds as if you have user or disk quotas enabled, and have exceeded one of the hard limits. As root, open linuxconf, config--File Systems -- Disk Quotas. Either relax them (ie, increase the default values) or disable disk quotas. Also check to make sure that your drive(s) aren't full.
