The only way to get proper error messages IS the CLI. It reads like I stated

Yup, all the stuf is installed. I can read most of my encrypted cd's like the

Like I said: driving me nuts..after flushing my head through the toilet

BTW I noticed a kernel (2.4.22-1mdk) message about udf: iso9660 not being

again using eject cdrom..some progress after all:o)

Actually you (or me) can't blame supermount, it's the link in /etc/fstab
that libdvdcss looks for (where else should it look?) to /dev/dvd that
 causes the problem.
At least that's the way I reckon.
In the meantime I just installed mplayer, xine and ogleduh!!

I have to add:
I enabled supermount again and now those DVD's run fine:o)
Apparently they (and then only some, so there goes my previous reckoning down
the drain) are only bothered the first time at decryption.
Once they've been added in .dvdcss/ there's no hitch anymore.

so maybe at last I'll be able to leave supermount onit's been a long road.

I'm guessing here, but it sounds as though whatever programme you are
using to play the dvd's is reading the wrong tack maybe ? If you are
using mplayer for instance you can call the app. with either ,
gmplayer -dvd 12,3,4,etc if it's the old version you have, or,
gmplayer dvd://12,3,4,etc if it's a newer version.

They really don't have international standards as far as track layouts
are concerned and sometimes it is just a question of rumaging around to
find the right track number.
At least eliminate that first.

If that is not the case I would suspect, since you are able to play some
dvd's and not others that it is not a libavcodec problem, to supply dcss
encription.

If so then I would start to suspect the regional setting of your dvd.
Care is needed as you can only change it 5 times, or so I'm told, and to
avoid that plf have their regional decrypt thing , which does not seem
to work with my CVS version of mplayer, but may well work with yours if
you have the standard M9.1 install with updates from plf. I probably
need to compile my CVS version with some unknown flag to make it addopt
the regional decrypt package, I donn't know.Any suggestions ?

You mention a double dvd , it shouldn't make any difference, provided
you have dcss encryption installed.I have many such dvd's and they both
play , though the actual film is often the only one encrypted.

Same damn problem. The same DVD's aren't recognizedthey just don't exist

So either my DVD drive is going down the drain or 'm looking at some new kind
of encryption (like the one's on some music CD's) that prevent them from
running on PC's (nothing mentionned on the sleeves though).
Strange though that I could and have read them for a short while (one up on

Just my luck: PC isn't M$ free anymore, can't read my new DVD's, hosed my good
old /home partition (that was another thread), grounded...and now I don't
trust my DVD drive anymore.

On the other hand: 9.2 (rc1 install being kept uptodate with cooker) is
running glitchless.
Well.didn't get to make a proper bootfloppy using MCC. I had to do an
upgrade to get the lilo up and running again.

Keep in mind, DVD viewing is NOT free or open source with the evil OS, you
have to have a commercial viewer, either one that came with the drive or a
3rd party one. CSS is proprietary and the open source versions available for
Linux are illegal to use in the US. On the evil OS, you need a DVD viewing
program that supports decrypting CSS for almost all DVD's.

You probably should be able to find a package out and about on the net, not
