Re: [newbie] Default OS and Internet Problems

2002-03-24 Thread John Lynch

I am so sorry that your entire computer screwed up.
It is good you found out now that Windows was broken while it was still in
warranty though.

I'm not too sure what you mean by output of the ipconfig command on both
machines, Sorry, I do not know much about computers, it's best if you use
easy english

This is what the ipconfig menu says in more detail.

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Bigpond:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix.: nsw.bigpond.net.au
IP Address.: (Numbers)
Subnet Mask: (Numbers)
Default Gateway: (Numbers)

Ethernet adater LAN:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix.: nsw.bigpond.net.au
IP Address.: (Numbers)
Subnet Mask: (Numbers)
Default Gateway: (blank)

ALL of the numbers are different, even the IP Addresses and Subnect Mask are
different.

I hope this answers your question.
If not, would you mind giving me instructions to find out the data you need.

Again, I'm really sorry about your computer.

Thankyou for all your help.
John

(sorry for the delay I can only play on the computer at night.)

John,

First an apology for the long silence. As I said in the last message I
needed to boot XP to refresh my memory on what to see you to look for.
Went to do that and bang - dead system disk. Nasty rattles and not much
else. So I am yet another victim of the now infamous IBM Deskstar
disks.

Now it's back at the supplier for warranty replacement and I have just
got my system rebuilt to the point where I can access e-mail again. So,
where were we?

Oh yes - your ipconfig response does answer the question and verifies
that we are good to go. Now, how are your addresses set up? i.e. What
is the output of the ipconfig command on both machines? Once I have
that, we can get into making them do something useful through linux.

  -
please correct any mistakes:

- 2 computers, one with 2 network cards installed and the other
with
one.
- a cable modem or adsl modem connected to a line and with lights

internet connection and LAN working before my family know what I've
   done.
 (they just got home)

ALSO I am TERRIBLY sorry if this has already been answered, I am
 quite
   sick
 atm so please forgive me.

But How do I access LILO (so I can make XP my default OS and it goes
 to
   XP
after waiting 5 seconds for me to specify otherwise) in Gnome
 (that's
   the
 desktop I have).

 THANKYOU very much.

 John

[newbie] Default OS and Internet Problems

2002-03-22 Thread John Lynch

I know this must have been answered a MILLION and EIGHT times, but I just
installed Mandrake, and I have read SOME of the Archives and couldn't find
anything.

SO your patience is greatly ENVIED and APPRECIATED.

I am in Australia, and I have cable with Telstra.

I do not know my IP address, I do not know what a hostname is, I do not know
anything about my internet connection, so when I installed Mandrake Linux I
left it all blank.

HOW do I find out the required information?
I also have a LAN (2 computers networked) I do not know if they are working.

I have not explored the Mandrake system yet due to the fact i want my
internet connection and LAN working before my family know what I've done.
(they just got home)

ALSO I am TERRIBLY sorry if this has already been answered, I am quite sick
atm so please forgive me.

But How do I access LILO (so I can make XP my default OS and it goes to XP
after waiting 5 seconds for me to specify otherwise) in Gnome (that's the
desktop I have).

THANKYOU very much.

Ouch! I've heard nothing but bad things about Telstra cable and ADSL. I use
Optus cable myself, and it works beautifully :)

I do not know my IP address, I do not know what a hostname is, I do not know
anything about my internet connection, so when I installed Mandrake Linux I
 left it all blank.

HOW do I find out the required information?

Call Telstra's help line and ask them.

Telstra's cable network is non-standard, unlike Optus which uses the @Home
system and DOCSIS (an internetional cable modem standard). You need a special
client to connect to Telstra, which can be found at
http://bpalogin.sourceforge.net/. You can skip Step 2 of the tutorial
(http://bpalogin.sourceforge.net/tutorial.html) by making sure that you have the
dhcpcd package installed (this is included in Mandrake, so you don't have to
compile your own).

I also have a LAN (2 computers networked) I do not know if they are working.

There are LAN tools in the Mandrake COntrol Centre.

I have not explored the Mandrake system yet due to the fact i want my
internet connection and LAN working before my family know what I've done.

I don't recall any Telstra questions on the list, so yours may be the first. You
may want to search through the list archives just in case. You may find some
extra detail there.

But How do I access LILO (so I can make XP my default OS and it goes to XP
after waiting 5 seconds for me to specify otherwise) in Gnome (that's the
 desktop I have).

Again, this is configurable in the Mandrake Control Centre. You can also access
the raw LILO settings in the /etc/lilo.conf file. Run 'lilo' once you've changed
them.

 THANKYOU very much.

 John

No worries :)

Yes but we're a patient lot. :)

SO your patience is greatly ENVIED and APPRECIATED.

Envied? H...so... you envy that we have the patience to deal with
you? :)

K now I envy You ;p

I do not know my IP address, I do not know what a hostname is, I do not know
anything about my internet connection, so when I installed Mandrake Linux I
 left it all blank.

You're on XP? Run a cmd line *Dos window thingy*, then type: ipconfig
/all

You'll find all your settings there!
write em down. You'll need them.

HOW do I find out the required information?
I also have a LAN (2 computers networked) I do not know if they are working.

Ignore the LAN for now. Far too complex to get into here ;p

In Mandrake, hit the little foot or the K at the bottom of your
window, then navigate to Mandrake Control center *might be on the
desktop too*.

IN that, find the BOOT options under that will be a window for LILO
configuration.

 THANKYOU very much.

 John

Thank us when its all working k?

Till then try to avoid strangling someone :p
