[newbie] Desktop Icons - CD-RW and DVD-ROM

2004-12-04 Thread Peter Watson
I have two icons on my desktop for CD-RW (/dev/hdc) and DVD-ROM (/dev/hdd).
How can I get rid of them. If I right click on them there is no delete
option.

I'm trying to get back to the good old days when I mounted and unmounted
removeable devices when I wanted to instead of having magicdev or supermount
muck it up and refuse to allow me to unmount or eject.

Also both of these drives are listed twice in X-CD-Roast once as ATA and once
as ATAPI, they also appear twice in kwikdisk. Anyone
know why this is?

TIA

Hi Pete,
You can get rid of the desktop icons by going to System/Configuration/Configure
your desktop/LookNFeel/Behavior/Device Icons tab.

Can't help you on the other issues.

HTH.
Best regards.

If you haven't already found the answer (assuming you are using kde):

1. right click anywhere on your desktop

2. choose configure desktop

3. click on the Behavior button

4. under the Devices section--uncheck any that you don't want

5. O.K.

As far as I know, scsi emulated devices always show up twice in X-CD-Roast.
At least on my system, they don't show up at all in kwikdisk.

Hi all, i'm new to the list so if this has been addressed before please
so so. I've looked in the archives but could not find anything there on
the subject. That does not mean its not there if it is its just I didn't
 find it.

My problem is a minor but annoying one and is that on startup the
desktop icons all gather on the left of the screen in any old order they
feel like.I have to snap them to grid each time to see to use them. This
happened under 9.1 and now 9.2, in 9.0, my first experience with Linux
they sat where they were told to.

Any info on how to get them to appear on desktop as I want on startup
appreciated. Both myself and my Guru are stumped on how to fix this problem.

Assuming you are using kde, open up the Control Center Components
Session Manager. I think that if you set that up to restore session,
then arrange your icons where you want them and log out, it should do
what you want.

[newbie] Desktop icons (kde)

2003-09-12 Thread Jonesy
Exists there somewhere a collection of misc. desktop icons for KDE?
I'm an OS/2 user slowly moving into the Mandrake world, and I've
started trying to implement the functionality of my OS/2 desktop in
my mdk boxen (8.2 and 9.1). One feature I use are desktop, and/or
folder-included objects, to dial, hangup, kill, and restart the
InJoy dialer over on my OS/2 gateway machine (via rsh.)
The on-board choice of icons in MDK\KDE is thin and un-inspiring.

Barring no public collection of icons, is there an icon conversion
tool to convert the 3,000+ OS/2 icons I've gathered over the years?

TIA

Assuming you're using KDE and you mean the pager in the panel at the bottom
of your screen:

righ-click on an empty space on the panel and select
Add Applet Pager

Hope that's what you're looking for.

If at any time Nautilus was 'turned off' you must use Beginner to reset it
to draw your desktop.

Open Nautilus, Preferences/Windows and Desktop: it should be there. If you
reset your preferences, maybe you need to restart Nautilus.

for KDE just delete/remove all files in this directory:

That wouldn't quite do it for me, an I've been tryin for awhile.
I want to keep Floppy and Cdrom, but of all the others no matter if
I delete them in both ../Desktop and etc/skel/Desktop Trash,
Templates, and Autostart keep comin back. I finally made a blank
(as in see thru)icon and set the icon's text to the same color as
the desktop, for those 3. Now they're just invisible, but they're
still damn there. I reckon it's a compromise till some guru
describes the right/easy way to do it ;-)

I had to do the same thing in Windows for that stupid 'My
Computer' icon, 'cept in Windows you can have no name under the
blank icon, so it's really invisible ;-)
