There isn't that much of a difference. If you don't have a fast connection,
then I wouldn't recommend going through the trouble of downloading it.

Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between Helix Gnome (or
whatever its called now) and the Gnome that is installed with ML 7.2? Is
 it worth downloading and installing?

Re: [newbie] Helix Gnome

If you have the bandwidth, Helix (now Ximian) GNOME is definitely worth
downloading and installing. Most official Mandrake updates are to fix
security bugs, not to introduce new features. Ximian GNOME, on the other
hand, provides the latest updates for packages (after being checked for bugs,
of course). That way your system (the GNOME portion) will always be
up-to-date.

Also add that command to the bottom of /etc/rc.local.
This works for gdm I am not sure about kdm but you may try to substitute

Hi all, I've just downloaded and installed Helix Gnome on my MDK 7.2

all. (It doesn't show up in the window managers list at all.) How do I
go about getting it back on the list so that I can use Gnome instead of

I've seen elsewhere, where someone suggested that you create a file in
/etc/X11/wmsession.d/ called '02gnome' which had the contents:

  NAME=Gnome
  ICON=gnome-wmsession.xpm
  DESC=Gnome Desktop Environment
  EXEC=/usr/bin/gnome-session
  SCRIPT: exec /usr/bin/gnome-session

I tried that and when that didn't work, I manually edited
usr/share/config/kdmrc and added Gnome to the list. Of course that
added Gnome to the list, but caused 'kdm' to load up IceWM, instead of
  Gnome.

I then used the 'Login Manager' application that came with KDE to edit
the list, and put Gnome back in the list, but it only got the same
results as putting it in manually.

That's the extent of my travels so far. Any help would be appreciated. I
guess the full extent of my question would be how to get Gnome to

I had this problem exactly and I have to thank John Wheat for passing on

Well, until I hear that either Helix or Mandrakesoft has fixed this

[newbie] Helix Gnome install on Mdk 7.2

2000-12-24 Thread dkunz

Hello,

Does anyone have Helix Gnome installed on Mandrke 7.2 ?
If so in your opinion is it better than the standard install of Gnome?

Would appreciate any comments and insights.

Thanks,

Re: [newbie] Helix Gnome install on Mdk 7.2

2000-12-24 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

I asked the same question on the list about a week ago and the response I
received was great (thanks everyone).

To summarise, there are several people on the list (including myself now)
that are successfully using Helix GNOME on Mandrake 7.2. The Helix download
page only mentions Mandrake 6.1, 7.0 and 7.1 as being supported. I e-mailed
Helixcode regarding this about a week ago and they said that 7.2 would not
work well with Helix GNOME, but a Mandrake 7.2 version is due soon. This is
merely the official word, and I can say that Helix GNOME works fine on my 7.2
system. The most noticable differences are a few new panel applets (like a
stock ticker) and your menu gets a little messed up as all the Helix links
are placed above the Mandrake ones.

The Mandrake and Helix GNOMEs vary little at the present. This will change
with time, however, as Helix releases updates via their Helix Updates service
more often than Mandrake does. Mandrake Updates focuses on security issues
and some bug-fixes, whereas Helix Updates tries to give you the latest
packages and features.

Re: [newbie] Helix GNOME Mandrake 7.2

2000-12-18 Thread Anthony

Yes, you can install with 7.2. However there are a few problems with doing
that.

First your menus get screwed up a little bit in Gnome. You have multiple
links to programs in the menus and they become pretty cluttered.

Secondly MandrakeUpdate won't work right with updates concered with Gnome
stuff. Right now MandrakeUpdate says I need to update some Gnome apps, even
though they are already updated. The problem lies with that my Gnome apps are
helix_gnome code, whereas the ones that Mandrake want's me to update with are
mdk code. It's not too big a deal, just make sure you don't try to update
something with MandrakeUpdate that is already updated via helix-update.

Finally, your login screen will get all screwy. I'm assuming this happens on
all Mandrake 7.2 systems (since it happened to me and some other guy on the
internet), but what happens is that under the window manager selection screen
the Gnome option disappears. Yes, it is pretty ironic that upgrading Gnome
will cause you not to be able to select Gnome from the login options, but
that's the way it is. The way to get around that is to put this into your
~/.Xclients-default file:

exec gnome-session

Then at the login screen, select "Default" for your Window manager. That
should then get you into Gnome hopefully.

Re: [newbie] Helix Gnome

2000-08-10 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

I have been using Helix GNOME for some time now, so I believe I am well
qualified to answer your questions. Here goes...

1. I was running GNOME during the Helix GNOME installation. I was careful,
though, not to run too many GNOME apps. All I had open was GMC and a few panel
applets, just in case. If you are paranoid, you can do it from something like
KDE or a window manager alone (BlackBox is really cool).

2. After logging on and off again, I found that Helix GNOME had removed all my
panel applets. This was no problem, though, and I just restarted them manually.
One thing I found is that the combined Desktop Guide/Tasklist applet was no
longer present and I had to load a separate Desktop Guide and Tasklist to get
the same effect. If you choose to use the Sawfish Window Mamanger (which has
replaced Enlightenment as GNOME's default WM), then you may want to fiddle
around with the settings to get it working the way you want it. Although
initially annoying, I was much happier after everything was set up.

3. Helix GNOME is much better than its predecessor. You will find that the GNOME
team have concentrated on tweaking the interface for far better stability
and usability rather than doing anything drastic. The Sawfish Window Manager is
*much* better than Enlightenment and most other window managers. It takes up
much less memory and hard drive space, is faster, and is far more flexible via
its configuration menus (which have now merged with GNOME's) and its LISP-based
scripting language. GNOME now has far greater and better documentation for its
features, though it is still a work in progress.

4. I strongly recommend Helix GNOME. The Helix Installer makes installing GNOME
a snap. I downloaded the full installer (14Mb) rather than use their
recommended method (using Lynx), and I feel that this is a better method,
particularly if you don't want Lynx. If a problem arises you can simply restart
the installer and it will resume from where you left off.

I hope this all helps.

Re: [newbie] Helix Gnome

2000-08-09 Thread Greg Stewart

Sorry, I answered out of order...

  3. Do you like Helix Gnome?
  4. Do you recommend it?

There are a lot of critics out there which have said the only thing they
don't like about Mandrake 7.1 is the fact that Mandrake chose NOT to use
Helix-Gnome in their distro.

Some people, though, have a point when they say that the Helix updater may
in fact install packages that are not approved by MandrakeSoft and may not
function accordig to the Mandrake optimisation.

I don't know...I have only used the Helix-Gnome updater under Red Hat.

  1. Which environment (KDE, Gnome, ...) should i be using when i
install it?

Um... Gnome is the required environment to install under, the gui installer
which you download from Helix only runs under Gnome. Did you mean to ask
whether you needed to be in console mode to install?

  2. Will it mess up my current gnome configuration?

Depending on how you have your system optimised, the Helix Updater may in
fact make unexpected or undesirable changes to your system. You run this
risk whenever you install a new version of a critical package such a
XFree86, desktop environments, or do OS updates.

I can't decide whether or not to install it. Hmmm well i'll just wait to
see what all of you say.

If you are not currently using gnome as you desktop environment, you may
want to try it out. You will be able to stay on top of the gnome updates
more readily as I don't believe Mandrake yet posts "daily gnome" updates to
the site.

It doesn't matter. If you install it in Gnome, you'll have to logout and then
back in for the changes to take place.

 2. Will it mess up my current gnome configuration?

It didn't change mine, except for the program menu's. It adds its own

not too much of a deal, but if you don't like redundancy or messiness, then it

Helix Gnome is great...nice eye candy. It will take
the place of standard Gnome, but will alow you with switch to other windows

I installed from gnome, it shouldn't make a
difference on what window manager you install from, only affects
gnome.

have fun.
