Hanan,

I'm jumping in without having read the previous stuff in this thread,
but have you installed a firewall on the linux box? This would seem to
be the most likely reason you can't ping it - if the rules have been set
to drop pings on the local LAN interface.

If you have installed a firewall, perhaps you could post the config
file.

 here is the latest configurations, (I'v been tampering with them all day):

 W2K machine:
 IP: 192.168.0.2

 the hosts file has:
 192.168.0.1linux.mylan.comlinux

 the same info is in /etc/hosts plus:
 10.x.x.x   hostname.my_isp_lan.com

 eth0 has the 10.x.x.x  IP( static / onboot )
 eth1 has the 192.168.0.1   IP ( static / onboot)

[newbie] I got the 2nd NIC start another round ?

2002-03-12 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

Its me again, I'm glad the Shame we live in diff countries mail got this
much replies today :) Now lets not let this take us away form our main list
objective ;-)

If you remember I asked for your cooperation in my little project ( connecting
a linux and a W2K machine through a mini LAN, and then to the Internet keeping
in mind my sort of not traditional DSL setup.

One good reply from Robin, who gave me this tip for how to physically connect
the  2 machines:

 if you want to use your computer for sharing

 Wall jack - computer1 - computer 2

 2 NIC for computer 1 and 1 NIC for computer 2

SO, I got the second NIC ( fast huh ? and you thought you'r gonna have some
headache free time ;) )

I plugged the 3com pcmci card in, it was recognized by MD, YET in the control
center under  networking it shows 3 (yes 3) eth0, eth1, eth2 !!
I didnt bother to see why, and I went on to set the cables this way :

cable coming from wall == eth0 (10.0.x.x in the LM machine )
cable coming out from second NIC == eth1 (192.168.0.1 the LM machine == hub
cable coming out from W2K machin == (192.168.0.2) == hub
the 2 cables go to regular ports on the hub ( none goes to the uplink port)

I set the hosts file on W2K as following:
192.168.0.1hanan.my_isp_domain.com
192.168.0.2w2k.my_isp_domain.com

,and gave the TCP/IP configurations the following values:
IP : 192.168.0.2
DNS : the IPs of the DNS the ISP gave me.
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

 LAN is not working machines cannot see each other.
where do i start ?

. suggestions, hints, questions, All welcomed :)

Try using Control Center - Network Internet - Connection Sharing
walk through the setup wizard and let us know if you need help.
Don't forget it's the 2nd NIC (I assume its on eth 1)

Re: [newbie] I got the 2nd NIC start another round ?

in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts

I have the following entries (files):
ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1, ifcfg-eth2
respectively:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=10.0.0.140
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=10.0.0.0
BROADCAST=10.0.0.255
ONBOOT=yes

DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
ONBOOT=yes

DEVICE=eth2
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
ONBOOT=yes
HWADDR=00:10:4b:a2:d1:a8

The eth that is connected to the dsl is eth0 after I added the new NIC I got
those eth1  eth2 ...
WHY why why I do have 3 of them while I only have 2 NICs?

Try executing the following when you make changes to the network
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
Why are you using pcmcia cards?
Or is this a portable computer?
I thought connection sharing would set up the card???
cd  /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
look and see if you have ifcfg-eth1
if you don't cp ifcfg-eth0 ifcfg-eth1
#= ifcfg-eth1
DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
ONBOOT=yes
#==
Then execute /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
Then see if you can ping the computers

Are you sure you don't have three
since you are using pcmcia, maybe there is a built in one??

 Set these up on the linux machine also in /etc/hosts

 Got to looking at those hosts names,
 they are not real are they?
 (don't use real names)

Just remembered what I don't like about the names
underscores are not allowed in domain names use a hyphen -

Youre good! fantanstic

 I cant belive this : from the w2k machine i cant ping anything but the

I am confused, I thought the Linux Machine was the local gateway.
So the w2k must be going through hanan eth1 then hanan eth0 to get to the
Internet.

so from the w2k machine you should be able to ping 192.168.0.1 (hanan-eth1)
start - run - ping 192.168.0.1

 and fromm the linux machine, thats another story !!
