For some reason though it will not accept my license key ... when I do the usr/sbin/hsfconfig --license command it tells me file not found (or words to that affect) Are you in 'root' mode or 'SuperUser' mode when you do the /usr/sbin/hsfconfig command? You must be for it to work. In your normal User account, you don't have permission to run the file, so the file is reported as not found. In a terminal window at the command prompt, type su and then enter the password for the SuperUser or Root account. Then run hsfconfig. At this point I also run WvDial and let it run in the foreground. I then switch to another desktop workspace to use the web browser and the email client. I do it this way because I have a lot of telephone line noise in my area and the web browser and email client will sometimes get out of sync with my ISP. So I go back to the WvDial terminal session, issue CTRL-C to stop WvDial, and then restart WvDial. Then I can return to the desktop with the web browser and email client and continue from where they stopped. (This is why I stopped using kppp as the modem dialer program. There wasn't as clean a way to get kppp to exit when the web browser and email client got out of sync with the ISP. I say out of sync, because the modem was still connected to the ISP the entire time the problem occured.) I don't suppose you can help me with my sound problem? So far I've had one reply to that post which hasn't helped unfortunately ;-) I missed the question. I use a SBLive! Value card with the ALSA drivers. Make sure you have opened all of your mixers and volume controls available under your desktop environment and increase the volume levels. Most of the mixers and volume controls have turned down the playback sound to 0 volume. Many times, just raising those volume controls will give you sound. Best, The Other. for an easy wine configuration, you can use the winesetuptk programm. It have a graphical enviroment to configure wine. then you just have to launch the programm you wath to test from the shell like this [EMAIL PROTECTED] wine ./MiProg.exe and if works then you are done if not maybe with the next release of wine... I seem to have successfully installed Wine (I got the latest version for Mandrake from the WineHQ site), and now I have to look into the configuration. Re: Re[2]: [newbie] Modem troubles
The first thing... about the modem... there are a lot of information about the real modems and the winmodems (or toy modems)... and because the winmodems are not based on standards of hardware and communications but on them own cheap technologi... is hard to make every winmodem works on Linux. The external modems (real modems) are built with hardware and software standards for communications so if you programm a driver for the standard communication protocol.. you can be shure it will work with all external modems... but if you try to programm a driver that aplyes only to some kind of hardware... there are no wharanty that this will work with all the hadware. Nevertheles if the driver you found says that works with youre specific winmodem... maybe you have to get deeply on its docummentation or get a real modem... The Second thing. Is not that MCC desn't save youre internet configuration .. is just that you are overwriting this. Let's think that youre modem allready worked... and you configure something like kppp to make a dialup connection or any other... so if you done well you will be connected to the internet any time you dial and youre configuration will be saved. But if you use the wizzard... any time you get into, will be overwriting youre configuration. If you need more help with any of this isues just mail us. My modem is listed in HardDrak(SP?) but there is now no configuration tool* button available for it for some reason. I have no idea whether it is configured correctly or not, or even where to go to do that. The other question I have is, when I go into MCC and look in the Internet section. [newbie] Modem troubles
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I am another Mandrake newbie (obviously or I wouldn't be here I guess!) and I need some help please. My modem is evidently a winmodem according to Mandrake, which is unsupported in Linux. It is Conexant HSF V92 56k PCI . I found a site which provides linux modem drivers, ran their modem ID utility to correctly ID my modem, and downloaded the appropriate driver. Because I am unable to get online from Linux I obviously had to unzip the driver file to a floppy. Now, can someone please tell me how I get this driver into Mandrake? :-) A geek friend gave me the following instructions for accessing the file on the floppy but it didn't work when I tried it. Maybe I copied something down incorrectly? When you're in Linux (as root) type 'mkdir /floppy' that will make an obvious spot for you to mount floppies to. Insert the floppy into the drive, type 'mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy' that will tell Linux to check the floppy drive for a DOS style (fat) floppy and to mount it at /floppy. Then type cd /floppy and type 'ls'. ls is the same as typing 'dir' under DOS/windows then look for the file that follows the format of the file you're looking for, if there's just the one file on the disk then it should be very easy!. The RPM command goes like such 'rpm i filename' The instructions for installing the driver (from the driver site) are as follows: METHOD A: BINARY RPM PACKAGE (*.{arch}.rpm) If you have obtained the driver package in RPM format: 1. install the rpm with rpm -i hsfmodem-{version}.{arch}.rpm 2. if necessary, run hsfconfig to complete the installation, enter license information, or to change your modem's configuration Can someone please check both sets of the above instructions and confirm for me whether they are correct? This command line stuff is totally new to me and I am struggling to say the least! If anyone can think of an easier way for me to do this, feel free to let me know! :-) Many thanks in advance! - -- Best regards, Carren -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: PGP 8.0.2 - not licensed for commercial use: www.pgp.com iQA/AwUBP9TmCsqIEIT739NzEQIwpACgqJzFmANJDIpsaFnA2T2Yu/RW+S8AoLy2 ftqdfdZ6lcyC9i3/Coh9innP =1ekn -END PGP SIGNATURE- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Modem troubles..
I'm having huge problems trying to get my modem to work... lspci -v shows this info 01:0e.0 Communication controller: Conexant PCI Modem Enumerator (rev 08) Subsystem: DIGICOM systems, Inc.: Unknown device 1035 Flags: bus master, fast back2back, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 3 Memory at f4100 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) I/O ports at 3400 Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2 when I try to dial up using KPPP, if I use /dev/ttyS0 it says modem ready Initializing modem... then it just hangs there indefinately until I hit cancel. The modem I'm using is a Creative Flash56 Blaster, I've heard someone else got this modem working so any help you guys could give me would be awesome. Oh, I'm running Mandrake 7.2 if that helps. Thanks in advance, Jim
RE: [newbie] Modem troubles..
I had the same trouble, but with a Win(ugh!)modem that someone had written drivers for. I first ran the init strings from the terminal, but when it connected, I got a lot of useless characters that kept me from inputting username/password. I found that it was hanging up trying to set non-standard speaker volume commands. I deleted these from the modem commands page in the KPPP setup, and it connected rather quickly. hope this helps
[newbie] Modem Troubles!
Hey everyone! Im having some terrible modem problems! My modem recently got fried by lightning... and the new one i got to replace it, turned out to be a plug-n-play modem. Well, i got the latest version (1.8) of ISAPNP. Linux sees my modem (i think). IM using KPPP to dial up my ISP, but when it initializes the modem withthe string ATZ, it waits for the response OK... it never gets it. I can go edit the modem commands, and take out the "OK" response. Now it passes the initialization, and starts to dial out. After it finishes dialing and connection, it stops at "waiting for response: CONNECT" PLEASE HELP! Whats the problem? Are the responses set wrong? Or is it something else? Thanks for your time!
Re: [newbie] Modem Troubles!
Sounds like the IRQ is set incorrectly. I have no experience with ISAPNP but i know ifI don't use setserial to change it to look for my modem on IRQ 5 instead of 4 where it thinks the modem is,I get the same problems you said. Check where setserial is looking and compare it to whatever the modem is set for. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info, Mark - Original Message - From: Donny To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, August 31, 1999 9:38 PM Subject: [newbie] Modem Troubles! jon kyle pula wrote: I'm having problems using my modem in linux. I have a U.S. Robotics 56k Voice ***Win modem***. Is there a chance linux incompatible with my modem? thanks, kyle Yes. There is a great chace your modem is incompatible with Linux. 100% chance, actually. Sorry. No win modems will work with LInux because the actual processing work of a modem is done in software for these pain-in-the-butts. And since it's all closed stuff, no one can get the specs or source to write the software for Linux. Ergo, no win modems can even begin to be supported in Linux. Until the manufacturers change their goddamned attitude, this is unlikely to change. For best results, I would recommend an external modem. It'll give you the least heartache IMO...failing that, an internal modem that is not PCI (since all PCI modems to my limited knowledge are win modems) and if it has jumper settings, you're in business. -- -- Kuraiken - Apprentice Codecaster -- Discussions heartily welcomed; Flames generally ignored. --

Re: [[newbie] modem troubles]
Absolutely - unless the situations changed and someone has written some Linux drivers, the modem relies on Windows to take on some of the functionality of the modem. The answer to the question has therefore always been - no, it won't work - sorry it's so negative !!.
