and of course you know you can use logical volum mangers to create 1 virtual

Windows file server:

40gb drive * /boot partition - 100mb
   / partition - 10gb
/var partition - the rest of the drive
10gb drive * SWAP partition - 1gb
/home partition - the rest of the drive
4gb drive /tmp partition - the entire drive

Use the /var partition for your Windows share(s) - create a directory
underneath the /var (like /var/file_share) and use that for your
sharing/network file archive

The /home is large enough to contain all the users email folders/files,
as well as your local home directory for mucking around and the likes.

By balancing out the system as such - keeping the OS on one physical
drive, the SWAP on another physical drive, and the /tmp on another
physical drive, you're load balancing and gaining the most performance
overall.

You might want to check into what file system(s) you're going to want to
use - I've found that ReiserFS is rather speedy - especially for my
Windows shares - heaps of small files and large writes/reads...

But that's IMHO - others may beg to differ.

HTH!

[newbie] new installation questions

2002-02-05 Thread Ravi Malghan

I did a fresh installtion of 8.1 on a Mircon
laptop. I have the following queston/problems
1. The installation does not seem to recognizing
the mouse correctly. It always shows
up as big white square instead of a pointer.

2. It default logs in in as a user userx. How can I
change this to ask for a login and
password.
3. Whenever I login, I see 4 nautilius processes
running each taking about 7M of
memory. Do I need this nautilus? How do I disable
it. I have been a RedHat user for
a while. Never seen this.

Any help appreciated.
TIA
Ravi

2002-01-30 Thread FLYNN, Steve

You need to boot with a rescue disk, or with your installation CD and type
'rescue' at the LILO prompt.

This will allow you to mount your linux root partition and sort out your
/etc/lilo.conf file.

Remember to run /sbin/lilo after changing the config file or your changes
will have no effect.

 Hi All,

Just installed Mandrake 8.1 in my AMD-500Mhz machine. It has two 20GB IDE
drive and I have partition magic loaded on the first one WINME.

I used PM to create a Linux and Linux Swap partition. Installation went
 ok
but when its time to boot, I have problem. It boots into WIN ME fine,
 when
I select Linux, the screen gives me a bunch of scrolling 0 and 1.

I think it is not booting the loader correctly, how do I correct this
 problem ??

 Thanks.
