[newbie] Printer Still not working
Hi All, I am still not able to use my printer. I was able to change my update source and have updated all my installed packages. However, I don't think it was able to properly fix my printer stuff because I'm not sure I had all the proper packages installed to begin with. When I was trying to install my printer I kept getting errors about not being able to find server. I did install what I did get though but my printer never worked. I was then told how to change my update source and did so. I no longer get those errors. I tried deleting my printer and installing it again but no good. How can I uninstall all the printer stuff so it will log onto the update site and get it all this time? Or is ther something else I need to do to get it working? I have a Canon S750 USB and the install said Canon BJ-35V driver should work. However, as I said above I don't think it has been installed properly. Thanks Russ First before uninstalling, are you sure it is not already working? If you try printing from any KDE application like KWord you will see a drop down list of available printers. Is yours listed? To remove all the printer software just open Mandrake Control CentreSoftwareManagementRemove software enter 'cups' in the search box, and uninstall the cups RPM which shows up as the serach result. Uninstalling just 1 cups rpm will result in the entire cups printing system being uninstalled. Then go to the HardwarePrinter section and reinstall your printer again. Be sure to choose 'cups' as your printing system. It will download all the cups packages and installthem again. At the end you should be able to print a test page derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Yes it is but nothing happens when I choose to print. The status says it is idle and accepting jobs but no worky. That printer is now the only reason I boot into windows (when I need to print something). If I can get that booger working I can make the jump finally (so close). If nobody has any other suggestions I think I am going to uninstall the whole deal and try it again. Have you tried installing a printer (you can do this without touching the current installation) from Mandrake Control Centre? If your model is not listed (and I gather it won't be) just chose the one that you have been recommended to use. There is an advanced tag. I would open that. If there are alternative drivers they will be listed. If there are, go on installing printers, taking each of those drivers in turn. Hopefully one of them will work for you. When the widget with the drop-down list appears and does indeed show your printer, took a look underneath where it says printer system currently used: that's a drop-down list too and should state CUPS common unix printing system. Yup, both of those are correct. And to also answer Anne's post, that is the only driver listed. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

OK, so maybe you could try the cups WWW admin tool, either through K,configutation, printing or using konq or whatever browser you prefer and go to (URL) http://localhost:631/ and try to add your printer or modify the one you find there. This will require you to log in as 'root' when queried! It's a (imho) a very nice tool to poke around and see what's going and whether your printer is working or not. BTW I'm not in the clear whether this is a local printer or not, but I expect it is. If not(i.e. remote), simply installing cups will suffice (no drivers) and it'll find the printer for you. Thanks Have you tried adding the printer via Webmin instead of going through all the OTHER processes? I've found that when installing a printer - it fails, Webmin sometimes comes to the rescue...but then again, I do alot of things that aren't quite by the book...(and I wear a red hat/bandana sometimes, too) (g) Cheers! -- Mon Jan 20 17:45:00 EST 2003 5:45pm up 4 days, 3:28, 6 users, load average: 0.27, 0.15, 0.10 -- |____ | kuhn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ || | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- linux user:267497 * RH 8.0 * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting -- If you want to know what god thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to. -- Dorthy Parker Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Printer still not working
I have an HP 1000-Cxi printer and it is not working under Linux. When I install Linux or use "printtool" it detects a printer port. I don't understand why it will not print. Nothing shows up in the printer queue either. Is there no one out there with this printer or a similar printer who has had these problems and succeeded in making it work. HELP
