Re: [newbie] Regarding off-toppic chit-chats: IRC

2003-01-09 Thread Terry Sheltra
Pardon the total newbieness :-), but I can seem to configure X-chat
correctly to connect to irc.freenode.net .. I put in the server name,
gave myself a nickname, and when i try to connect, I get the following:

--- Connecting to sterling.freenode.net (212.204.214.114) port 6667..
--- Connected. Now logging in..
--- AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
--- AUTH :*** Found your hostname, welcome back
--- AUTH :*** Checking ident
--- AUTH :*** No identd (auth) response
--- Closing Link: ts (Bad user info)
--- Disconnected (Remote host closed socket).

Is there something else I need to do that I'm not doing?

Thanks!

Actually there is a channel on Freenode called #mandrake-offtopic that might
be most appropriate for off topic chat.I am there now and it could use some
provocation.

Some servers require an ident response (see pidentd) for access.
But before looking at that, I'd try a different server.

If you still have trouble, feel free to contact me via email directly,
and I'll do whatever I can to help.

Brandon,

Thanks for the response. What I entered into the server setting was the
generic irc.freenode.net .. I've seen it connect to several different
servers within the freenode.net group, each one of them giving me the
same message. Even typing in one of the servers directly results in the
same thing. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

When you fire up X-Chat, have you made sure that you've setup a
username/nick and all that jazz?

When you fire it up, it's going to give you three places to put in
nicknames, then your real name and etc - you need to fill them in.

Then, when you create a link for a new server (irc.freenode.net) you
still will need to put in some type of username - not a password, just a
username...then you should be right (don't run IRC as root)

I connect to IRC servers everyday without having to use an ident server. So I
dont know that is the problem.I consider them a security risk and wouldnt use
one unless I had to.I am on Freenode now without one.So your rejection might
be caused by something else.

I've just noticed that some servers require it.
As for the security risk, you can always run the fakeident.

you could probably grab a src rpm for it ;)

If you don't want to have the load on your machine, though, the IRCOPs on the

big ones like DalNET, etc.

can also run eggdrop (comes with mandrake 8.2, i think it's in the 9.0 contribs too)

An IRC channel sounds like a great idea.

Starlink looks fine, but it only has one server in Europe. :(

BTW, Eggdrop 1.6.13 works like a champ on mdk 9.0, they fixed some old

the openprojects.net IRC servers have a better coverage,
4 AU servers, a Chinese server, 10 EU servers and 9 US servers,

http://openprojects.nu/irc_servers.shtml

Upon connection, the MOTD does say:

-USERNOTICE- You've connected to the Freenode network via IRC.OPENPROJECTS.NET. That
domain name's being PHASED OUT, since Open Projects changed its name to Freenode in
August, 2002. If you connected directly, please reconfigure your client to point to
IRC.FREENODE.NET and reconnect. If you connected via another project's irc hostname,
irc client default or web site, please ask the project owners to change their pointer!
Thanks.

So it looks like the servernames need to have openprojects.net replaced with
freenode.net.

http://openprojects.nu/policy.shtml

Network policies.

Chanserv and nickserv services available.

In the channel listing there are a few channels of note: #Mandrake, #mandrake-linux
and #mandrake-offtopic, plus channels for things such as MySQL, mplayer, MDK-Cooker,
KDE, gtk+, gnome, etc.
Perhaps we could form #mandrake-newbie here? IMO it'd be a good alternative plus
possibly a place to refer people who do not want to receive the bulk of email from the
list yet still have some of the benefits of it.
