[newbie] Reinstall problems
Thanks for the help on permissions earlier. There are a couple more issues. I have to start firefox and thunderbird from root on reinstall of md10. Previously I started from root and they were ok on the 2nd start, but not this time. Also Thunderbird is not picking up on the settings in the home folder. Imported profiles on firefox and every thing was ok. Any help would be appreciated. john Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] reinstall sound
I posted this earlier, didn't get any help on it so I'm posting it again. I lost every device out of my /dev/sound folder due to some freak Mandrake snafu, so I have no sound in Gnome. Can someone tell me how to reinstall the sound devices? Having to reinstall Mandrake in order to fix this is not a solution I am interested in. And no my sound is NOT muted. /dev/sound is empty. My Specs: Dell 400SC (brand new) running Mandrake 9.2. Sound is the onboard AC'97. Any help is appreciated. [newbie] Reinstall
Hello, again! I really screwed something up on my wife's Linux box (yes, she loves Linux and now she hates me!) and need to reinstall. It's a duel boot system with Win ME. If I do a fresh install of Linux, will it still see WinME? And if not, how do I go about keeping ME recognized on boot up? Thanks a million, Riker
Re: [newbie] Reinstall
Yes it will. You shouldn't have any problems doing a fresh install. You can probably get back into your wife's good graces, if you do not format the /home partiiton ( it will leave all of her settings intact.) Just make sure er user name is the same. Good Luck Eunice P.S. Are you sure you really have to do a new installation? Can you boot into Linux with your floppy boot disk? Riker wrote: Hello, again! And don't worry, Linux setup is well behaved and keeps boot sectors intact, as far as I know. It has never let me down. Paul -- Instant Shaman. Re: [newbie] Reinstall
Eunice: First, thanks for responding! Actually, I can boot the system and everything runs fine except I can't access her CD-ROM (trying to install Mozilla off of the Mandrake 7.2 CDs). What I think happened was this: I tried to install a CD-Burner in her machine, and in doing so I followed the instructions on Mandrake's site for setting up a burner properly (same thing I did on my machine). Well, come to find out the burner wasn't working properly so I took it out. I think this is what I did to put myself in a world of hurt with my blushing bride. :) Since you inquired, is there a way to rectify this situation without reinstalling? Reconfiguring the fstab? Maybe? Here's to hoping! If not, I will go ahead with the reinstall, confident that Mandrake will take care of WinME as it should. Thanks, Riker Eunice Thompson wrote: Yes it will. [newbie] Reinstall of 7.1 stalls
I'm reinstalling Linux due to stupidity. Now however, the installation stalls at "formatting hda1" it has already formated the other partitions. Hda1 is the / partition and so far it has been sitting there for an hour doing a 5-10 second blink on the HD light. Any suggestions? What is the command to do a clean wipe of the hard drive? Oh, yes I have tried rescue disk and other configurations of partitions. Nothing seems to work. A little help here! I'm seriously frustrated. Dennis

Dennis DennisYou probably need to boot up with a rescue disc (I use tom's rootboot from http://www.toms.net/rb/) and type: fdisk /dev/hda Then type p to list the partitions. Then type d to delete the partitions (1 by 1 till there are none left). Alan
Re: [newbie] Reinstall of 7.1 stalls
bah you dont need to download anything, if your boot disk doesnt work well guess what your install disk is the main thing! reboot your comp with the install disk in the cdrom just like your going to install on mine i get a little menu hit enter or wait 5 seconds for the install, the next is hit F1 for help, yadda yadda HIT F1!! type rescue hoora you now have a prompt [$root@recue$] type fdisk /dev/hda and go through the process type p see whats up there is a variety of options, if you think deleteing the partitions would help, usually does delete them save your work reboot and try again on your reinstall
