Title: 9.2 update

Hello,

I am setting up a Mandrake 9.2 box as a
syslog server and was wondering how I could gain access to that box remotely?
I prefer to use SSH. Can anyone provide me with some direction?

Thanks,

Depends on the security level you've assigned on the server. If it's 'Standard'
then it's just:

ssh -u username ip of server

assuming you have a user account on the server, of course.

If you have the security level set higher, you may need to configure the server
to accept connections from specified hosts. Edit /etc/hosts.allow with the IP of
the box you want to connect from, and edit /etc/hosts.deny, which may have an
all setting in place.

One thing, please don't reply to existing posts and change the subject, start a
new thread instead. More info on that here:

You basically answered it yourself... make sure the ssh server is
running and port 22 is open then from a win box or lnx box open an ssh
session and access the box. putty is good for win.
in terminal just type ssh ipofserver

Ok - now I'm trying to understand something here - are you actually
using rdesktop for your remote connection, or are you using VNC for
your remote connection? For connecting to a Windows box, you aren't
going to be allowed much control in that area - but in connecting to a
linux box, you can configure the screen resolution...

I indeed ment the connection to a windows box.

then there is nothing else to be done that installing those graphical
rdesktop clients..

it would be a nice feature for the next major release though..

Yeah, I get a bit pissy when I have to connect to a machine that's
800x600 - I can't seem to work properly - but then again, I just
maximise a command prompt and do what I have to anyways...it really
sucks that on MS TS and the likes that there IS no control - you are
shackled by the size of the host screen - and they don't do anything
about it - they LIVE with it because MS said so.

VNC on unix/linux is by far so much better. I rather like to have a
1600x1200 screen IF I WANT TO..

Okay, gang ...

I've won most of the battles here ... Thanks in no
small part to the help I've received from this list, I
have a Postfix/IMAP mail server up and running and all
is well with the world ...

The rub comes in trying to set up my Windows computers
to access their mail ... Outlook and Outlook Express
are out (per an edict from The Head Boss), and no one
really likes using Eudora ... and I'm having trouble
finding much of anything else.

So I was thinking ...

Would it be possible (or even practical) for Windows
users to access my server via cygwin/XFree86, so that
they could use a linux mail client instead? (I'm
rather partial toward Evolution, due to its simple
interface that would hopefully keep the troops from
screaming every 3 minutes for help.)

And for security's sake, would it be possible to
mirror my EngardeLinux email onto my Mandrake box, so
that I wouldn't have to run X on my EngardeLinux but
rather on a box with no exposure to the Internet?

I've already set up cygwin/XFree86 on my test box and
tested its connectivity to the box I hope to use as a
mirror, so if you folks tell me i'm not entirely off
my rocker --- I need you to point me in the right
direction to learn about how to mirror (if that's
the correct word here) my EngardeLinux mail to the
intermediate box ...

Of course, I'm a true newbie here, so feel free to
tell me i'm nuts and suggest a better way to
accomplish my goals.

RE: [newbie] remote access to mail for m$ users???

2002-11-20 Thread Lanman
Something else to consider is a Windows client called Calypso It's
totally free, no adware/spyware, and runs like a charm. Hasn't screwed
up once with my customers. Allows for all the normal bells and whistles
of Outlook Express, without the hassles. Does a tidy job of avoiding the
usual virus traps that plague Outlook Express, and allows for
auto-backups. Set this up on 60 Windows clients, with their backups
automatically going to their My Documents folders on an LM 8.2 server
running Samba.

Backup of the server is done nightly. Also managed to get around the
McAfee Anti-Virus bug that was deleting emails from Outlook Express.

Might be simpler than your present course. Just a suggestion.

Have you looked at Mozilla Mail?

I admit earlier versions left something to be desired but in the latest versions it
seems to work pretty good. On top of that Mozilla seems to have fewer security issues
than IE (If your users seem reluctant to use Mozilla rather than IE just show them how
to block pop-up windows and how to use tabs...) and when and if they ever switch to a
non-Microsoft OS they will already be familliar with the browser and mail applications.

One other mail server not mentioned is Evolution. Looks a lot like outlook.
will that work?

Re: [newbie] Remote access to Webmin

2001-05-31 Thread Tim Holmes

There's something else you're going to want to look for, or your webadmin will NOT
allow you access to
the interface.

As ROOT, edit the file /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf

I believe it's line 11, that by default reads:

ssl=1

Unless you have ssl configured and the cert created, you will not be able to gain
access to the webmin.
If you change that line to read:

ssl=0

You will be able to get by using http://hostname:1.

Once you've gotten that far, keep in mind that webmin will ONLY recogize the root
user, and the root
passwd specified at install. If you have since changed the root passwd, the new
passwd will not work.
So I hope you either remember the original root passwd, or haven't changed it.

As far as ssh goes. Stick with it! It's more secure then telnet unless you're using
another kind of
telnet. I know FreeBSD comes with a secure telnet that uses SRA secure login.

[timh@yoda timh]$ telnet ic.net
Trying 152.160.8.96...
Connected to ic.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
Trying SRA secure login:

Personally I am fortunate enough that if I'm some where with an Internet connection, I
can get into my
box. But I have access to a server that does support telnet, against my better
judgement. From which I
then ssh to my machine at home. Or I'm at work where we use secure connections for
everything, or at a
partner's house who's machines are set up very similarly to mine.

Once you have the webmin set up, you can use the ssh function that comes with it. As
long as the browser
supports java, you're good to go.

If you insist upon going away from ssh, then verify if telnet is installed. Use this
command to find out
if telnet, and telnet server are installed.

[root@r2d2 /root]# rpm -qa | grep telnet
gnome-telnet-2.4-2mdk
ktelnet-0.7b1-7mdk
telnet-0.17-7mdk

As you can see there is not telnet-server on my machine. I forbid access to my
machine via telnet.

Re: [newbie] Remote access to Webmin

2001-05-28 Thread h3rb

First you need to make sure that webmin is running. At a shell do a :
/etc/init.d/webmin status
if it comes up with:
miniserv.pl is stopped
Then webmin is not running.
Do this at a shell to get it running (as root):
/etc/init.d/webmin start
Then it will print out:
Starting Webmin [OK]
And then to be sure it is running to this again:
/etc/init.d/webmin status
if webmin is running it will print out this:
miniserv.pl (pid 1421) is running...
(the pid will vary)

There are many many ways to remotely control your machine, command line is
all you need. Although webmin makes it alot quicker and easier because you
can use it from any machine, even if it don't have an ssh client installed.
If you want to use ssh you can run X through an X session, just make sure
that x forwarding is enabled in your /etc/ssh/sshd_config. And you can even
do this through windows. On my work windows machine I use a combination of
SecureCRT and Reflective X. SecureCRT is a windows ssh/telnet client and
Reflective X is a windows X server. Now if you are on dial up I do not
suggest doing this because it consumes alot of bandwidth.
