[newbie] Updating Mandrake.
I am running Mandrake 7.2, but would like to upgrade to 8.2, which I presume should be better. However when I tried to do an upgrade, I lost all my Wine settings. I need to run Wine, so I can use a couple of Windows applications, which do not appear to yet have Linux equivalents. They are Quicken and Agent. It appears that Wine now stores its config files in a different location and uses a different syntax. Is this correct, or can I still use my old configure file. I also lost read/write access to my windows partition except when logged on as root. There did not appear to be an easy way of changing permissions, but perhaps I could not find it. I tried editing my fstab file but then go errors on boot up. Again can I preserve my present fstab file, or is there an easy way of giving users full access to my windows partition. I hope someone can find the time to answer these queries, or perhaps the only interest is in people using versions 8 onwards. Re: [newbie] Updating Mandrake.
For Quicken, check out Crossover Office. It (reportedly) allows you to use up to Quicken 98, with the added bonus of Office 2000 as well (if that can be construed as a bonus). I plan on picking it up as soon as I have 9.0 installed, it's gotten very good reviews. Incidentally, have you found that Quicken works well under Wine by itself? [newbie] Updating Mandrake 7.2 Java
Hi, There are some Java programs which I have that aren't compiling, using the current version of Java (1.1?) on Mandrake 7.2. I was thinking of trying 3 things to remedy the problem. But, to avoid more potential problems, I'm wondering if you can look over these 3 things and give some advice on them if any, 1). Do you think installing Java 2 over Mandrake's Java version, will present any problems on the system? 2). Do you think uninstalling Mandrake's Java is a viable solution? 3). Lastly, should I just install Java 2 as a /home/some_user instead of root and run java from that /home/some_user/java installation? Thanks in advance for your input! = Chantha K. __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [newbie] Updating Mandrake v6.0 - 6.1 = HOW?
Ernest The version number is a way of identifying the distribution. As soon as I wrote/posted my6 inquire, I realized this. ;-) Sometimes it helps to write out my query for me to "reason" it out. If your kernel version is 2.2.13-7mdk 2.2.9-19mdk and there is a name (Helios) on the log in screen for the text mode, Hmm... I'll look to see what it does have there the next time I boot to Linux. Interesting that you didn't have any problems doing the upgrade that way. I've seen several posts indicating that this may lead to problems. Upgrade? I beileve what I did merely qualifies as an "update". ;-) And when it comes to me accomplishing the "outside the norm," that is of no surprise to anyone who knows me. ;-)
Re: [newbie] Updating Mandrake v6.0 - 6.1 = HOW?
The version number is a way of identifying the distribution. For example, Mandrake 6.0 has an older kernel, and older releases of some if not all the software included in that distribution, as compared to the Mandrake 6.1 It is just simpler to use a CD to upgrade the entire distribution in one process. If your kernel version is 2.2.13-7mdk and there is a name (Helios) on the log in screen for the text mode, then I'd guess you have the 6.1 version. Interesting that you didn't have any problems doing the upgrade that way. I've seen several posts indicating that this may lead to problems. Take Care PCNo, you still have 6.0 but with all of the updates needed to make it as stable as possible. You can buy a GPL disc of Mandrake v6.1 from Linux Mall, Cheapbytes and several other places I don't remember right now for under $2 plus shipping. Or you can buy one of the more expensive commercial packages. Or you can download (install via ftp or download a iso image that can be burned onto a CD) the GPL of 6.1. Alan
