[newbie] virtual desktop and riva128 probs
Hello, I got a PIII-500, 96M RAM, and a RIVA128. First off, how do I get rid of the virtual desktop option? You know, when you can have windows that overlap the edge of your screen. I remember an option when I installed it in the Xwin configuration part, but I can't find it in any of the configuration options now. Will I have to reload just to get rid of it?.blarg... Secondly, I am having problems with switching resolutions. I'm set right now at 32 bit color, 640x480, with the monitor set to whatever the closest one is. This setup works fine for now, but eats up desktop space. I've tried switching the monitor settings but it doesn't matter, no dice. Also, how 'bout changing the refresh rate?I can tell mine needs to be bumped up, but can't figure out how Thanks in advance, Mario

RE: [newbie] virtual desktop and riva128 probs
What are you running, KDE? Enlightenment? Each one has different places to disable the virtual desktop settings. As far as the monitor goes, run Xconfigurator from a terminal and you should be able to set things up there. Make sure you manually pick your resolution and color settings though. I have it done it lately but I know it always defaulted to something that I didn't want. Hope this helps. So how do you disable the virtual desktop setting in Sawfish and Gnome? José A. Mirles
Re: [newbie] virtual desktop and riva128 probs
In Gnome Control Centre, Sawfish Window Manager, Appearance. You can set the "columns and rows" to 1 and 1, and set the workspace to 1. on the Edge Flipping tab de-select the "Select next desktop when the pointer hits screen edge." Hope this helps! --Greg - Original Message - From: "Austin L. Denyer" [EMAIL PROTECTED] So how do you disable the virtual desktop setting in Sawfish and Gnome? Draxconf - Change X Resolution. The rest is self-explanatory. Regards, Ozz. __ Vous avez un site perso ? 2 millions de francs à gagner sur i(france) ! Webmasters : ZE CONCOURS ! http://www.ifrance.com/_reloc/concours.emailif

My virtual Desktop is jump from a virtualt desktop '1' to virtual desktop '2' when I go to dawn with a mouse or from the '2' to the '1' when I go to up with the mouse, haw I stop this , can any one help me. Is possible add to the desktop a 'Desks Overview' ??? If you are using KDE, use the KDE configuration tool (on the taskbar) and change the settings for 'resistance' in 'desktops'. Or you can just turn it off, I think. GNOME has a funky little program which shows a mini picture of all four desktops. Should be there automatically. I don't know if it will work with KDE.
[newbie] Virtual Desktop
Greetings from another brand new Linux user (with another duffus question ;-) Is there a relatively painless way of turning off the expanded virtual desktop area? I really meant to say no to that option but I must have hit a wrong key. If I can I'd like to find a less painful way of doing this than going through the whole XF86config. Thank you all! Mark

I have a ATI Rage IIc card and had the very same problem. My fix was to choose a unlisted video card during the initial setup, then go to xf86config and set the card to the resolution you want. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Andre Baron Sent: Thursday, February 25, 1999 3:36 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Virtual Desktop On Wed, 24 Feb 1999, Nick wrote: I have been attempting to get KDE to function properly since the release of Mandrake 5.3. I have tried editing out the XF86Config file to remove the virtual settings, but I have had no luck. With Mandrake 5.2, the Millennium II was properly found and worked fine. This is happening on more than one machine, and also with Red Hat 5.1. I can't figure it out, can someone shed some light on this? I was having the same problem with my ATI Rage Pro card, it's actually not a function of the card, it's the display settings. When I turned my display to *only* 1024x768 (higher may work but my monitor doesn't do it) the virtual desktop dissapeared (thank goodness) Andre

Thanks, Nick -- Nick, If you have more than one resolution specified in XF86Config, the highest one will be used as a virtual desktop, regardless of the current. Confused? Example: "800x600" "1024x768" "1200x1024" will yield a virtual desktop of 1200x1024 in 800x600 or 1024x768. So the highest one will be used no matter what. Solution? Find a resolution you like, and make that the only entry in XF86Config. It'll be the "true" resolution without having to scroll. If you like to switch on-the-fly, however, I'm afraid you're stuck (unless anyone else knows a workaround?) Paul +---+ Paul A.
