If you have Gnome installed, gtoaster is a great program for burning
cds, including iso's. Instructions are here:

Paul, if you are seeing direct CD then you have the Adaptec software and it
only works in windows, I missed which system you are using, but if you are
using it in windows then the Adaptec CD should also have Easy CD Creator
4.x as well, This is the software you will want to use to create CD images
or Audio or Data cd's, The Direct CD is used by preformatting a cd with that
hardware and then you can use it like any removable disk to copy files or
whatever. The formatting can take an hour. But the Easy CD Creator is very
straight forward and works a lot like Gtoaster. HTH

If your using linux cdrecord will burn it fine. If you're using windows
cdrwin or easy cd creator work for .iso. You have to select something like
burn disc image, or image i'm not sure exactly how it's worded. It just
has to know its an image file and not just straight data.

I'm so newbie I don't know if linux is pronounced lin like sin or line like
sine.

It's like sin. But that exact word is attached to that ofter software ;)

I have been lurking for months and enjoy this list.

I installed 8.0 with no problems that haven't been addressed here until
today, discounting my own bumbling.

Just downloaded Raklet iso's and burnt cdroms, however result is a cdrom with
the file
mandrakelinux-8.1-raklet-beta3-cd1.i586.iso rather than a cdrom full of
files. Where have I erred?

An ISO file is a CD image. When you burn the ISO file to the cd, you just copy
the file.
You need to tell the program (Gtoaster, GCombust etc) to write a cd from the
ISO. So point to the image file and create a cd from that. There's a fine
difference, I hope you see it.

I used neroburning (gulp) windows 98

Everyone's allowed one big mistake. You just used yours. heheheh!!

Hi,

I haven't used Nero/Windows in a while, but if I recall correctly, go to
the file menu and choose burn image, then change the file type to all
file types and find the iso image, press OK and choose RAW/2362 format
and press OK, then if it says something about size being reported
incorrectly let it correct it automatically, then start burning. What you
did was burn the FILE that is the iso image, NOT the iso image to the
disk.

Sounds like you've burnt the ISO file directly onto a CD. It's an Image, so
burnt it as one...

It is normal for your burner to be detected as both. Only the SCSI will
be used for burning, because that is what cdrecord requires. We load a
module called ide-scsi.o to make the ide burner look like a scsi. You
can always address it as /dev/sr() where a number replaces the parens.

You can easily make a boot floopy from the cd in windows if ya need
it. run the program rawritewin.exe in dosutils/ on the cd and point it
to images/cdrom.img on the cd put a floppy in your drive and you've got a
boot disk for installing from cd. Take a look at the README in the dir
images/ it explains it nicely. :)
