Re: [newbie] DPMS in LM7.1 won't stop

2000-09-24 Thread GAPrichard

Jeff,
I'm sure it must be something simple too. Let me clear up one point of
confusion: the whole computer goes into power conservation, this is not just
a problem of the video card. When it goes to the next step of power saving
shutdown there is no getting Linux back up without cutting the power to the
computer [at least I haven't been able to revive it]. And since Linux wasn't
properly shut down this can be a problem.

I'm really not sure what it could be then. The steps I listed have always
worked fine for me. Maybe your video card has more options than mine when
it's
using power_saving.. Maybe searching through the list archives a little for
dpms vidcardname? Just glance at that file again and see if you see any more

[newbie] DPMS in LM7.1 won't stop

2000-09-21 Thread GAPrichard

Newbie group, please help me get rid of this annoyance!
The DPMS (computer operation suspension for power conservation) function
disabled correctly under Linux Mandrake 7.0, but since I upgraded to LM 7.1 I
can't disable the DPMS from functioning. I have been setting it from KDE by
going K configuration Hardware DPMS and then unclicking the DPMS
enabled button. Finally clicking OK or the Apply button and then OK makes no
difference. Root or a user makes no difference. Setting DPMS and rebooting
doesn't make any difference. In all cases DPMS works whether enabled or not!
This is not coming from the motherboard BIOS! If it makes any difference
I'm using XFree 3.3.6 not 4.0 (which gives an illegible screen).
Curiously, (even though the DPMS button doesn't make any difference) the
DPMS enabled button only remains released during the current session for
either a user or root. Logging in always finds DPMS enabled button pressed,
whether rebooting or not, whether changing from root to a user (or back) or
not.
How do I set DPMS off in another way and get past this annoyance?
-Gary-

First thing I do to stop this is remove kdpms. Log in or su to root. Start
up kpackage. Click on the little magnifying glass and type kdpms and hit find.
When it shows you the package hit done. Now while you are in kpackage with
kdpms selected and showing you all about it there's an uninstall nutton at the
bottom. Click it. Then Click Uninstall on the pop-up box that appears. If
you want to make sure it's really gone search for it again. Even though it'
gone your not done.

Once you have that finished go ahead and start up your favorite text editor
(you still need to be root). Your going to open the file
" /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config " about 3/4 of the way down you will see a
section called graphics device section. It is labeled clearly you shouldn't be
able to miss it. Look through everything in that section and you should see a
line that says :

Option"power_saver"

Now just put a # in front of this line so it looks like

#Option"power_saver"

It's really quick and easy it's just alot of steps Hope this helps you.

[newbie] DPMS Instructions

2000-07-21 Thread Gil Baron W0MN

Can anyone write instructions to get DPMS (power management) to work
reliably and to stick across IPL. If you go to KDE and set it up it only
lasts for that session. The next boot it is gone. There has to be a way for
something like this but I have tried setting I have seen in posts and
nothing seems to work.
A Pointer to a reliable factual document would also be fine. The exact url
please if possible.
TIA

Open DPMS and press help. There you will find instructions for making
your changes pernament. I do not remember off hand what they are because I
have DPMS disabled on my systems.

This is getting frustrating. If I do KDE/Configure/Hardware/DPMS and set
it
enabled and set it so all three are 20 Minutes (No other settings that
make
the first than the other two will stick) and then reboot It does not
stick. If I don't boot then DPMS works.
HOW do I make it stick? How do I make it other than the default times?
I put the settings in the Xconfig screen area as documented but NO??

Re: [newbie] DPMS How???????

2000-07-21 Thread User 26

Gil, I had the same problem when I first installed 7.1, and it drove me
insane! There's a little simple trick to make the settings stick - I'll
have to get back to you with the precise instructions as I'm not in Linux
at the moment, but if you go to the DPMS configuration screen, and click on
the help button, it'll bring up a local HTML page (if you installed the
help manuals) that explains it in detail. But in brief, you have to make a
desktop shortcut to DPMS and stick it in your Startup folder, and then
reboot. Ever since I did that it's worked perfectly!

I have the identical problem in reverse. I want DPMS off on my desktop. I
therefore deselect it but when I reboot it is back on! I too would like to
know how to make the selection stick and change the default.

Since I do not need it, is there a way to "uninstall" DPMS?

In the startup services ("setup" in a terminal as root), disable loading
of APM (Advanced Power Management).

Hi Ot,

You can always install the DPMSi...rpm as root, if it is missing.

[newbie] dpms not compatible

i think the dpms is not compatible with my ATI Rage Fury video card. it
used to shut off my monitor when i used the old ATI Rage Pro video card.
But after changing video cards this power management which i really
liked will not work anymore.

does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the dpms to work with
this card? thanks.
