A quick solution may be to just install the printer as a new

I don't think it needs this Derek. If I understand his problem
correctly it is very simple to deal with. When printing from some
apps (Gimp seems to be the problem on mine), a filter gets left
behind. All you have to do when you see this error is to call up
print again, check the properties and you will see the filter.
Delete it and print away

A quick solution may be to just install the printer as a new printer. Use mcc
and add a printer with the same attributes but call it newprinter or such.
Then make it default and see if printing works again. Did you d/l a cups
update or some other printer util lately? HTH

Re: [newbie] Printing problem

2000-12-02 Thread Till Kamppeter

Do the following:

Do not reinstall Linux Mandrake 7.2.

Try to print directly to the laser printer by entering (you can use any
short text file):

   cat ~/.bashrc /dev/lp0

If this works (at least some of the text visible), there is a problem
with the printer spooler (CUPS or LPD), otherwise there is a problem
with the kernel and its modules or with the hardware.

To solve the printing spooler problem, try a clean reinstallation: clean
up your system by entering

   urpme cups lpr

saying yes to the deletion of all dependent packages and entering

   rpm -rf /etc/cups /var/log/cups /var/spool/cups /var/spool/lpd

Download and install the updated CUPS packages from

   http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/

To download and install the packages simply copy and paste this into a
terminal window:

   mkdir update
   cd update
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/cups-1.1.4-7mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/cups-drivers-0.3.6-39mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/ghostscript-5.50-44mdk.src.rpm

http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/ghostscript-module-SVGALIB-5.50-44mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/ghostscript-module-X-5.50-44mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/ghostscript-utils-5.50-44mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/samba-2.0.7-19mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/samba-client-2.0.7-19mdk.i586.rpm
   wget
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/samba-common-2.0.7-19mdk.i586.rpm
   wget http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/drakgw
   wget http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/cups-print.txt
   rpm -Uvh *.rpm
   cp drakgw /usr/sbin
   chmod a+rx /usr/sbin/drakgw

Reinstall the CUPS frontends:

   urpmi xpp qtcups kups

Now install your laser printer as described in cups-print.txt or as in

   http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/#4th

Try the installation of the printers with "printerdrake" at first.

Tell me exactly, step by step, what you have done, which program you
have used, which driver you have chosen, and so on. Does "kups" show the
printer ports? Do "printerdrake", "kups", and the web interface
(http://localhost:631/) autodetect the printers? Do you get error
messages? Can you print the test page, can you print from applications
as described.

If you still cannot print can you send me the files
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, /etc/cups/printers.conf, /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd,
/var/log/cups/error_log, and the output of the "lsmod" command.

Check also whether the CUPS daemon (the program which runs in the
background waiting for printing jobs and processing them) is running? Do

   ps auxwww|grep cups

If there is a line containing "cupsd" in the output, the daemon is
running. If not, enter

   service cups start

to start the CUPS daemon for the current session and

   chkconfig --add cups

to make the CUPS daemon automatically being started at every boot.

Now try the ink jet. Do the same as with the laser. If this printer is
not autodetected, enter

   modprobe printer
   service cups restart

and try again. Note that CUPS needs something like 30 seconds to come
up.

When you haveboth printers working, reboot and check whether they still
work. If the USB printer does not work any more but the laser printer
still works, edit the /etc/sysconfig/usb file adding the line

   PRINTER=yes

and do

   service USB restart
   service CUPS restart

and try to print on the USB printer again.

[newbie] printing problem after upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1

2000-11-27 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my machine from LM7.0 to LM7.1, and the printer stopped
working. Would appreciate if anyone can help.

The printer is a Epson Stylus 600. It is connected to a scanner, which in
turn, is connected to the parallel port. It was working fine when I had
LM7.0. It still works fine under Win98SE. When I try sending jobs with
lpr, it just doesn't do anything. I tried PrinterDrake, and neither the
ASCII nor PS test page will print. Oddly, if I cat an ASCII file to
/dev/lp0, it does print. Can anyone provide some hints?

Regards,
Andy

In KDE, try playing with printtool. Make sure that you setup the
printer to the correct thing, local, remote, samba, etc. You can
reselect the driver and port there to test.

[newbie] printing problem(s)

2000-01-31 Thread Alan Sabrosky

Have a minor g printing problem with 6.1, using my Panasonic KX-P2130
dot matrix printer ('cause my Lexmark 3200 is not supported). I have it
set up as an Epson 24-pin, and it works fine with all of the text
editors and Maxwell; using printtool, I generate both text and
postscript test pages without a problem. But when I try and print email
from Netscape, or anything from Corel WP8 or StarOffice 5.1, all Iget is
(are? whatever) reams of paper with what looks like a couple of
postscript symbols at the top of each page. Not exactly helpful, to say
the least -- I have set up the printers (I think) in each applicartion
in a number of permutations, with no success.

Netscape acknolwledges printing problems in Linux, but doesn;t say what
to do about 'em (guess that's one of the reasons AOL bought Netscape,
not vice versa... g). Corel and Sun offer generic information, and
after a week, haven't responded to emailed requests for help :( . I'd
be grateful if anyone could point me to a detailed HOWTO (I've checked
the ones with the distribution...nada), or better yet G, suggest
how to set up that printer in any one of those applications.

Thanks in advance -- got to say I have quickly bcome addicted to Linux.
I have kept a DOS 6.22 partition and a separate Win98 partition on my PC
for games only :) :) :), and everything else is now Linux. No more
"broken windoze" for this old puppy!

[newbie] Printing problem

1999-11-11 Thread Karen Heiby

I have an Epson Stylus color deskjet 660 and I'm using the regular Epson
drivers in ghostscript (configured in printtool) and my /etc/printcap
shows that it is set correctly with lp0 as my printer port.

I *can* print whether or not I'm in root, in a console by sending a bash
command to lp0 just fine (as in "ls /dev/lp0).

I can't print in any Xwindows applications, though, and I can't use the
lpr command.

For ex. in Netscape, the command used is lpr -Plp0.

1.) When root, I get "lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot star daemon"
2.) When non-root, I get "lpr: cannot create /var/spool/lpd/lp01/.seq"

Can anyone help with this?

I've read everything I can get my hands on in the books, docs, and
newsgroups and can't find an answer.

Thank you,
Karen

[newbie] Printing problem - UPDATE

1999-11-11 Thread Karen Heiby

I restarted my computer and I can print now when I'm in *root*, in the
console as well as in Xwindows applications such as Netscape.

I still cannot, however, print from any other user. I am still getting
this error:

"lpr: cannot create /var/spool/lpd/lp01/.seq"

Maybe I'm missing some permissions thingie, I don't know.
I set everything in /var so that everyone could read, write and execute
from it. Same thing goes for /dev/lp0 (yea maybe I didn't have to but I
wasn't sure).

Any help would be great.

Thank you,
Karen
