Re: [newbie] No NUMBER lock? Solved

2000-11-22 Thread Jeff Malka

I discovered the problem is not the version of numlock but the file to invoke:

In Mandrake 7.1, the command to enter was "numlock".
In Mandrake 7.2 it is "/usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock" (without the
quotes).

The 7.1 kde autostart folder is no longer functional. The new autostart
folder in 7.2 is ~/.kde/autostart.

The kde2 in Mandrake 7.2 overwrites the root window so that commands like
xsetroot no longer take effect.

etc., etc.

Is there somewhere where one can read the changes made so as not to waste
days trying to devine what Mandrake did here or there?

Thanks.

I did what you said with the Level #s but it didn't work, I restarted x
every which way with numlock on, off whatever I could but it doesn't
work. the numlock worked in my LM 7.1 so I even tried the old LM 7.1 pkg

tried the settings you said with the old numlock pkg installed didn't

guess. Your settings with the 7.2 numlock pkg and then if it doesn't work
give up and wait til the cooker has an update.

The way I got round it was to install or make sure the numlock RPM was
installed (can't remember which now)
Then I went into the Autostart folder :-
/home/.kde/Autostart and created a new Application - set permissions to RWX
for user and "execute" is simply /usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock
This switches numlock on when KDE starts

When you are running 7.1, a program called numlock should be installed.
Add a kdelnk to your autostart for that.

Are you running 7.2, then you need to link to
/usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock

Well, i've upgraded KDE2 to CVS 20001117 using Chris Molnar's rpms
and numlock still doesn't start on boot. I don't believe it's a KDE2
problem. It hasn't been important enough to me to get it going. I've
seen some posts (ML's and NG's) that either say it's a minor conf file
change, to it's completely broken, use the 7.1 rpm. I gave my 7.1 CD's
away, so I'm not sure, but I believe you'll find a 'numlockrpm' on
7.1 CD's or from a 7.1 mirror. The one I'm currently using is
'numlock-1.0-10mdk'

I can turn NumLock on/of in DrakConf Startup Services "click the little

on in the screen that was about supermount/disk optimization.

Ah yes, Tom, I did omit that. Been seeing so much of 7.2 here I took

an un-tarred package where it should go.

Thanks to all ! I didn't have the option at install nor within DrakConf
Startup Services , but I found it on disk 1 of 7.1 and that did the trick.
I also found that after installing an RPM to uncheck Restore settings
option for Root and User before rebooting. I had a messed up Taskbar when
failing to do so. It restored after another boot following the unchecking
stage. After things quieted down on the second boot I then choose the
option to Restore settings.

   What version ??

If it's 7.2, a lot of people are reporting the same. The only
work-around I've heard (in NG's) is to install the numlock package from
7.1
I believe cooker is workin on a fix.

Locate 'numlockx' via freshmeat.net - it will do what you want

For me, NUM LOCK on was an option when I installed...

Don't know about it other than that, except you might scroll through
/etc/X11/XF86Config to see whats in there. Thats where I found the line that
allowed me to switch my CAPS and CTRL keys... ;-)
