Actually, in this case, the CRTC may actually do something. They've been
coming down hard on people lately and they may just continue.

Also, there's an election coming up in the next 12-18 months (current betting
line). So the political appointees on this regulatory group may just listen
to enough outrage particularly if it's directed at concern for privacy and
such.

I'd also suggest that people concerned complain to the federal privacy
commissioner too. And, if Sypmpatico is stupid enough to let M$loth run an
english only service then the languages commissioner is a good bet too. :-)

Oh, I'm so glad Sympatico doesn't exist in the west anymore. :-)

Actually et; The word you're looking for is probably dichotomy, not
oxymoron. For Example, here's a list of oxymorons from where else?
Oxymoron dot com in reverse order I was too lazy to Cut and Paste each
one separately.

I personally like example No.1.
20. Government Organization
19. Alone Together
18. Personal Computer
17. Silent Scream
16. Living Dead
15. Same Difference
14. Taped Live
13. Plastic Glasses
12. Tight Slacks
11. Peace Force
10. Pretty Ugly
9. Head Butt
8. Working Vacation
7. Tax Return
6. Virtual Reality
5. Dodge Ram
4. Work Party
3. Jumbo Shrimp
2. Healthy Tan
1. Microsoft Works
Of course, they forgot my two other favourites;
1) Central Intelligence Agency, and,
2) Trust us, we're from the government, we're here to help!
I'm fairly sure that Lyvim was simply expressing his annoyance at the
depth to which Microsoft has deluded the general public. I have to say
that I agree with him on that fact! It just proves that you don't have
to build a great product to be No. 1, You just good at building in such
a way that all the morons will buy it!

Looks like Microsoft got it right the first time, which is a total
shame, since their products really DO suck more often than not! It never
ceases to amaze me at what the public will buy into if the marketing is
done properly! The really funny thing is that their installation tools
work flawlessly, while the stuff you're installing blows chunks! Huh! Go
Figure!

Fortunately, I've found quite a few free applications which replace
Microsoft's products, whether they're made for Windows or for Linux, and
I regularly install those for my clients as well as for my own use.
There's just something about using someone else's brand of software to
access Microsoft services that gives me a warm-fuzzy feeling! Especially
when they're not loaded with adware and spyware!

Speaking of free, has anyone else been to http://theopencd.sunsite.dk ?
Or am I the only one who knows about it? Nice ISO file with an easy to
use install GUI for anyone trying to get Windows users to switch to Free

I've been d/l'g new releases an makin CD's for those that are

Tom; I hear ya Man! It's a bit different for me, and possibly for other
folks too, because most of them ask for Windows (where I immediately go
into my you should consider Linux and this is what it looks like, and
this is what it costs - routine), but almost all of them try to get me
to install M$ Office for free.

My reply sounds a lot like Sorry! That's not gonna happen!, and that's
when I show them OpenOffice, Trillian (replacement for MSN Messenger),
Firefox, Mozilla or Netscape with only the web-browser component
installed, and Thunderbird for email.

Then I start telling them the benefits of each, and they either get
tired of hearing me talk, or they see the sense of what I'm saying. Most
of the users out there ( or as I prefer to call them - Victims ) are
just afraid of change, not of the actual programs themselves.

Something else I'm noticing is that a lot of my new clients are hearing
about Microsoft's issues before they even come to me. Still others
try to get me to fix their Microsoft programs while I'm fixing something
else, and that's when I install the ones I mentioned above.

I'm constantly amazed (although I probably shouldn't be, by now) at how
often I get calls from people who have virus-related problems! For the
most part, they have no idea of the fact that the have to UPDATE their
anti-virus definitions, and in fact many of them actually shut the damn
things off because they get annoyed about the pop-up that's displayed
when the update is occurring.

Needless to say, a lot of PC builders are probably kept very busy just
from re-installs. I'm almost guaranteed a phone call from a Windows
client 4 months into the warranty period. They don't run scandisk,
defrag, or anti-virus updates, and can't understand why they see pop-ups
or find spyware on their systems!

Thinking I could do my clients a favour, I created a document which I
place in the All Users folder under C:\Documents and Settings, and
you'd be surprised at how many clients go out of their way to delete it!

Anyway, I agree that the majority of users will cling to M$ stuff, until
something drastic happens to change their minds. Until then, we shall
have to console ourselves with the fact that we are the chosen few who
were smart enough to go with Linux to begin with! Sigh! It's lonely at
the top!

Grin!

If you're a Sympatico client, check your email settings and take a close
look at your PoP3 and SMTP server names. If they contain host names like
pophm and smtphm , your account has already been moved! If they
don't contain those hostnames, then you'll be receiving an update from
Sympatico sometime in the next 6 months. The hm in the hostname stands
for HOTMAIL, because that's the server that will be handling your emails!

Sorry, been otherwise occupied lately...
Just to be clear: at some point, I'm going to get a notice from Sympatico
telling me to change my e-mail settings to the new server names in order to send
and receive mail?
IStop here I come! I've already got the Alcatel modem, so no installation fee,
no modem rental, and I pay the same price I'm paying now. Oh wait, with IStop I

Joe; Welcome back. According to new information, you were supposed to
get an email from Microsoft or Bell-Sympatico, telling you to
re-register with Passport so that Sympatico or Microsoft could verify
that your email address was legit - ie; you weren't using some old email
address from Sympatico which you may/may not have been using in the past
via Hotmail or MSN.

Read the article for yourself and let me know if it makes any sense;
http://service.sympatico.ca/index.cfm?method=content.viewcategory_id=60content_id=2109
In addition to this confusing piece of tripe, new users of Sympatico are
required to change their Sympatico email password AT Microsoft's
Passport site (not at Sympatico's site), so that they can activate their
Sympatico email account! Those new customers will also have to get a M$
Passport if they don't already have one, including Hotmail and MSN,
since you can't get a Passport without getting a Hotmail account.

They are also required to use the new POP3 and SMTP servers for their
accounts (named as pophm.sympatico.ca and smtphm.sympatico.ca on
Sympatico's new documentation), and I was told by a Sympatico supervisor
that all customers would be getting moved gradually to the new system.

I suspect that the hm in the server names represents Sympatico's name
policy for HotMail or Home-Microsoft, so that their techno-weenies can
tell what configuration is required when dealing with clients who are
having email problems.

In addition, those new servers will be parked at Microsoft's server-farm.
Don't that give you a warm, fuzzy feeling for Sympatico?
FYI, I've already filed a complaint with the CRTC and Sympatico has 30
days to respond, after which the CRTC will have a complaints panel
review the situation.

Now you have the latest info. Sleep well!

Joe; Since you're changing ISP, you're right, it won't matter. But if
anyone is staying with Sympatico, they'll be getting moved to the new
system. As part of that move, users must apply for a Passport, which
automatically set's them up for Hotmail, and subsequently MSN Messenger.

But the defacto policy from Microsoft (a.k.a. The Borg), is that users
must check in to Hotmail at least once a month or their Hotmail accounts
(and thereby your Passport AND POSSIBLY your Passport and Sympatico
accounts), will be suspended or shutdown completely.

This looks like another attempt by Microsoft to grab a big chunk of new
Hotmail users before any of the other webmail providers get their hands
on them! I suspect that once M$ finds a way to dominate the global
webmail market, they'll also find a way to start charging fees for it.
