It might depend on what they do. If they're clueless and insist on
messing with the computer, there will be problems for Win or linux. If
they just surf, email, etc and either don't want to or are not allowed
to mess with it, either might be fine. Win is probably not as
satisfactory because of the viruses, spyware, etc - these tend to ask
too many questions and need a slight amount of knowledge and
maintenance. Not good for this crowd.

in the days of y-modem downloads, and BBS,,, I tried to setup a 286 in a
hospice, that would allow the folks to connect to my BBS, but as soon as
the connection was established, the first message that flashed (in text)
on the screen was Connect 9600... Error Correction Protocol

As soon as almost anyone say the 'error' message, they went for the plug
in the wall, only the more savvy ones tried the power-button, and NONE
waited to see what would happen.

Ahem, i tutor these people at SeniorNet.

They get sold a box with a firewall, virus-checker and windows update.
They wouldn't know it has a firewall, run the virus checker regularly
but dont know about the update button, and wonder if the windows
update reminder is a virus. I myself have only just learned about the
joys/pains of system restore which may or may not have been turned on by
the retailer. Many of the virus calls i get are solved with Ad-Aware or
Sy-Bot Search Destroy. But it takes 2 hours to show them how to update
windows and there virus checker database before i leave the house

R could target them as well. They don't because they can't get in.
R Windows vulnerability is what makes it the target, not it huge
R user base (thats just icing on the cake).

It is harder, but there's more to it. First, the base is important
just for bragging rights [I got 35,000 zombies this week. How many
did you get?]. It makes the numbers game much easier - for both the
14-year-olds-over-the-summer and the real crooks.

Also easier in Win. There is much readily available code for the
taking - well commented and easily changed to get a 'new' virus.
Little talent required for the change, even though the original might
have required quite a bit of knowledge.

For many kids, it is just another kind of game, and it is made
possible by the readily available virus 'kits'. MANY fewer kits for
Mac/linux, plus the much smaller base = much less interest.

If you don't use OE, then it might be OK to use a contact list. For
example, TheBat email client uses its own list, in a different format,
and in a different place - TheBat does NOT use any Win components. A
virus looking for the Win address book will find it in the usual
place, but it has nothing in it. :-)

Make sure NO Win components get used, and you'll be much better off.

I also saw one at work (I do telephone tech support) 2 days ago:

Boot to windows and you get a message that reads something like this:
Kanga ANTI-Ko$oft says "Not Today"

And you get no further.

I have no idea how it's transmited, but thought the dual booters would like the
info.
