2002-12-25 Thread Hans Borg
Hi Chris,

Sorry to all if I am slipping in,

Your spelling "xwmconfig" is Ok. May be you don't have it in your
installation. This program basically sets a pointer (mostly soft) to
point to your basic X Window Manager (xwm..). Have a check in
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit" or where ever xinit resides in your in-
stallation. Mostly you will find this pointing to xinintrc.kde, xinitrc.fvwm95
etc. You can easilly do this with "ln -s" if you don't have "xwmconfig".

A happy new year
Hans.

hi, i tried the command 'xwmconfig' and it doesn't work. it's not a

haven't ever set a default for x, so this is probably the problem. thanks.

I presume you're using Linux ?
Have you tried running 'xwmconfig' to set the default
window manager to KDE (or one of the others) before
you 'startx' ??? You'll need to do this for each
different user on your system that you want KDE to
be used as default for... Unless you place the
init file in the default dir under /etc so it is
copied to the filespace of each new user as they
are created...

Hope this helps... Merry Christmas!

hi, merry christmas to you to. i'll try to explain this the best that i
can.
KDE doesn't start when i 'startx'. a gui with a few console windows and a
window for a clock appears. i tried 'startkde' not knowing it was a command
and KDE started (only while within the gui, not from the shell). so i start
KDE from the gui, and every component of KDE (ie, the desktop, the taskbar,
and programs i open like mozilla or a text editor) opens up in a new window
of the main gui that opens when i 'startx'. it's like running KDE within
another gui environment. seems very strange to me, and i know that it
shouldn't happen because at school i use KDE and it loads up automatically
on startup, or from the shell when i 'startx'. i can probably start a GNOME
session at the same time (i haven't tried), but i want to get it so it's
just a KDE session by itself, like the windows gui. the desktop in windows
is the back most visible component. when i start KDE, the desktop can be
minimized or killed. i hope i explained the situation well enough. i'm
gonna
send this to the newbie group too, just in case you don't know what's going
on. but thanks again.

A few possibilites:

   * 32 MB RAM may not be sufficient for Mandrake 9.0, or may require
some special installation procedures. (In any event, something like
KDE 3 will be very slow unless you have a lot more RAM -- I wasn't
reasonablyhappy until I had 256 MB.) If Mandrake does successfully
install with 32 MB, you will want to use either a different window
manager than KDE (several are supplied, I think some are still
installed by default, especially if you install everything).

   * Have you checked the md5sum on the installation CD -- my
understanding is that sometimes problems like this come from a bad CD,
or

   * How fast is the CDR/W for reading -- I commonly have problems with
fast CD drives -- they seem to accelerate and decelerate, accelerate
and decelerate, and sometimes I think the software time out while
waiting for the drive to accelerate again. I have started to install
only slow CD drives (2, 4, 8 X) to avoid the problem (plus they are
cheap).

Finally, consider signing up for one or more of the Mandrake mail lists
([EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and ask your
question there.

I am trying to install Mandrake 9.0.

Here is my specs:

ep-3vwm otherboard
via cyrix iii processor
32 mb ram
40 gb hdd
dvd
cdr/w
floppy
onboard sound
on board vt8601 via tech graphics.

i get to install packages and select them. I press install and it begins,
then it says:
"problem installing package
xfree86
continue anyway?

Please can someone help me? I am a newbie to Linux and have not yet been
able to use a Linux system. I gave in on Debian too complicated! lol

nb, i have tried the patch for via c 3's from mandrake web site and it
gives me this:

I tried that this morning. For some reason I get to the install first
screen which tells me to press either f1 or enter.

after this it runs throu a search of my pc and freezes at the following
lines:
IDE 0 at 0x1F0-01F7, 0x3F6 on irq 14
IDE 0 at 0x1F0-01F7, 0x3F6 on irq 15

it will not let me any further. So i now cant eben get to install screens.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Off topic I know, but how about vnc. You'll need to get the server side
installed at school and then run the client at home.
Full twm style interface as I recall.

Check out

How do you disable port 32768? The -nolisten tcp option
works with port 6000, but if X is started with xdm, it
doesn't shut odd port 32768. This problem doesn't seem
to occur with startx, just xdm. netstat -ap shows that
the process xsm is listening, but nothing in the xsm
documentation that I can find tells how to turn this off.

2002-10-14 Thread rhughes

Greetings

I have run into a problem where when in X, regardless of which window manager I use, hitting the right Ctrl key locks up the keyboard.  So far, as a test I have modified the xinitrc file to only start with xterm (no window manager).  From here I can type normally until the right Ctrl key is pressed.  From that point on things get VERY squerly.  Here is a typical test case:

startx
(X starts with an xterm in the upper left corner (no window manager) )
mouse over the xterm and type normaly
hit the right control key
press 'a' - if there is text on the line, the curser goes to the first character
press 'd' - if done after hitting 'a', acts as the delete key until last character is pressed, then it exits X

I am running a Red Hat 7.2 system

I have also noticed that after the right control is pressed, often the mouse buttons bring up xterm menus... as would be expected if a control key was being held.  This leads me to believe that pressing the right control key is somehow 'locking' the control key.   I have looked at the .Xdefaults but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the ncurses4-5.0-4.i386 rpm (trying to refresh the terminfo db) as well as the XFree86-4.1.0-3.i386.rpm (trying to fix any keymap issues) but neither has helped.  It may be worth noting that this problem is not limited to xterm (it was just easier to test there).  No matter where I am in X, evein if I use something like the default KDE start script, pressing the right control key appears to lock the keyboard.

Any suggestions would be much appriciated.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

hi

I had the same problems with 7.2 and ggeforce4 mx.
At firs you have to dovnlan from Nvidia GLX and kernel
paches then instal them and run edit you XF86Config-4
file. (how to do this is written in Nvidia to link to
help is
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/README).
then you must to run 4 version of XFree86 video
server. To do this run Xconfigurator --preferxf4 and
set the appropriate symlink of
/usr/X11R6/bin/X to the appropriate server(it is
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86).
or do other way is to do as I did in hard way (if 4
version dosn't start) instal linux again (only kernel
and tools) then instal video drivers and XFree86 in
console mode.

So prepare to work hard :)
I wish luck for you

No question is "too newbie" for a newbie list!

Edit your /etc/inittab file

from:

id:5:initdefault:

to

id:3:initdefault

You should see a few comments above the "initdefault" line which gives
you an idea what all this means.

I'm not sure what exactly is your question. It could be that either you
are currenlty looking at an XFree86 X session and want to kill it and get
back to a text console:
in that case pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace simultaneously would kill the X
session.

Or you could mean that when your computer boots it automatically starts an
X login session (managed by xdm, gdm or kdm):
in that case edit the file called "/etc/inittab". This file will have a
line

id:5:initdefault:

Change that line to

id:3:initdefault:

Then any time that you want to start an X session type "startx". These
instructions are generally correct, but details may differ depending upon
the GNU/Linux distribution that you are running. Your best bet is to read
the docs that came with your distro, then browse the HOWTOs at the Linux
Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org.

If RH also installed 3.3.6 then all you need to do is redirect X to the adequate X 3
server
(poassibly XF86_S3 would do) and chack that you have an XF86Config which has the right
format (RH
usually creates both a XF86Config-4 for X 4 and a XF86Config for X 3, I am not sure
whether it
does that in 7.3 - I have 7.2- )

The install program detected Sis SG86205 video controller.  According to this web site the above controller is not supported by v4.2.0 server but is supported by 3.3.6.  My system appears to be using 4.2.0. ( I used the command  ls -l  /etc/X11/X  to determine this.)
Anybody know how I can correct this condition. I'm too old to type those text mode commands all day.

Hello James,

The first message is telling you that your font server (xfs) is either not
running or not listening on port 7100
(information courtesy of Dr. Andrew C. Aitchison
http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2001-October/011795.html :-)

The second message is from Blackbox, not 'X'.
I think its something to do with locales/i18n etc.
Do a google on that exact message (in "quotes") and you might get some more
info.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi All:
I was looking thru the source code of the
XFree86 server. I was wondering if it was possible to change the background
color/image of
the Client Display.
Also, who creates the display buffer for the
display. i.e. if there are 3 windows open on a desktop lets say 4, where is the
Background added to the display buffer.
Thanks,
Preetham.

2002-07-11 Thread Kam Panesar

Hiya,

We currently are attempting to use pc's which use the Intel 845 integrated
chipset which uses the 845GL video chipset.

Intel's advice to get this to work under RedHat Linux is to use the VESA
driver but it appear that this does not work for myself.

I don't know if this is due to something I am doing or whether there is an
issue with Xfree 4.2.0 and the Intel 845 graphics.

I am using the 2.5.25 (previously tried to use 2.4.18) and I have compiled
support for 845/850 chipset in the kernel.

The issue seems to be that you attempt to go to init 5 and the screen just
remains completely blank even after a bit of disk chundering. I can switch
back to a text console fine and there doesn't appear to be anything untoward
being logged on the console.

Closer examination of the Xfree86.0.log file seems to reveal a whole set of
write combination errors relating to the VESA module which is trying to be
used Xfree86.

I would appreciate some pointers on being able to resolve this.

I apologise if the information is a bit vague but I would be more than happy
to elaborate if it helps diagnose and fix the problem.

Many thanks

Kam

I installed the latest version of XFree86(4.2.0), but it seems that
when I installed it, some of my configuration files were overwritten
or replaced, and now I think it made my default desktop manager twm
instead of Gnome. I tried running Xconfigurator, but the program seems
to crash on the first screen when I press 'OK', with the error message
"segmentation fault". With xf86config, I can change the monitor, video
card, mouse and keyboard, but not which desktop manager it should
load. How and where can I change this manually?

I would rather assume that the graphic card is not recognised in such case one gets
sometimes a
320x240 resolution. Depending on which version of X you are using (I don't know
FreeBSD well
enough)you could try using SVGA (X 3.3.x) or vesa (X 4.x.x)
The 810 has also given some troubles you should use google on the list to get the
various
solutions which were advocated...

John, there is a place in the config menu that will allow you to set a
higher reaouloution. It sounds like you
are using one that is larger than your monitor or card can handle. Try
setting it for a resouloution lower than it is by a factor of 2 or 3.

John how did you setup your video card?
Did you have the mfg specs to feed the setup.
If not you may need to do that. You may also need to
change the monitor
type to a different refresh rate.
When you say that Gnome is too large to run do you
mean it is too large
to load, or is the display so large that it runs off
the sereen?
Royce

I setup X using Xfree86. I had to use the SVGA
generic for my video card becuase from what I saw
Intel 810 is not in the list. I used the exact
specificaitons for my monitor and for some reason the
resolution does not make a difference when I change
it. Everything is to large on the screen like after I
setup XFree86 The test screen is to large and when I
startup Gnome it is to large for the display.
Thank you for any help

hi lee,

why not ask the processor, not the xserver.

ie, ps -ef | grep xterm or whatever, then after filtering that list
of processes, you can ask the xserver for any additional details you
want?

I meet problem during the installation the 'Radeon 7500' video card using
the Linux Redhat 7.2. I followed the instructions from the XFree86 and
downloaded the XFree86 4.2.0. I installed it by running the .sh file. The
installation is partially success because the system can't use the KDE or
GNOME.
what the exactly problem? I am a beginner of the Linux. hopefully someone
expert in related field can help me. i appreciate your advice. thank you.

Hi,
I'm a newby, I install in my company a server redhat 7.1 with KDE / XFree

Today I was starting my graphical interface "startx" from tty6. One second
later,I changed to the terminal tty1 with "ctrl+alt+f1". My screen was
freezed and the system was locked. I manually restarted the server and try
to restart my GUI and I had this message:

"(II) Keyboard "Keyboard0" handled by legacy driver

What can I do to patch the XKB keymap loading?

Hi,
I have a i810 card and use Debian GNU?linux Potato with kernel
2.4.x(agpgart
module compiled) and XFree86 4.2. When I try to start the X I receive a
message like this: Less than 6MB AGP memory. In var/log/message I see
that agpgart reserves 3MB for AGP memory, and cause this, I think that
problem is the agpgart...Is there a way to increase the memry reserved by
agpgart? Is there a parameter to compile the agpgart module with kernel to
set the memory for AGP?

2002-02-17 Thread David Reed

I installed 7.3 Professional default with Office on a HP Pavilion N5210
notebook with 64MB RAM and 10GB hard drive. When I inserted "Options
sw_cursor" in XF86Config, it gave me the proper arrow cursor.

However, only text mode and Failsafe work fine. I still have these problems
with the other graphical interfaces:

1) KDE displays a desktop with only the two or three icons or half-icons:
trash can, CD drive, sometimes half of the world globe. But the screen
freezes immediately, and nothing works. Sometimes KDE opens with a red
background and exploding bomb graphics. Ctrl-Alt-Del is usually the only
way out.

2) fvwm2 usually paints only the top half of the screen, leaving the bottom
half without even the background, and then it freezes. (Sometimes it paints
a distorted screen instead.) None of the keyboard commands work here. Only
a paperclip in the reset hole gets me out.

3) mwm and twm have similar problems, and the screen soon freezes.

I have re-installed four times in the week since I have had SuSe Linux
Professional 7.3, and still can not use anything except the text-based
screens.

I have not yet received any personal contact from SuSE Support -- only
automated replies to my e-mails. Please help.

Thank you,
David

Hi,

I posted recently about not being able to get X windows working due to it
hemorrhaging on startup, bleeding on my lcd screen, and generally making an
arse of itself. This problem prevented any user from using X, I 'fixed' that,
though, by postponing the symptoms until I close X out, whether it be by
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, or clicking the 'END SESSION' button, or right-clicking
and closing, or killall -9 X, et cetera.

It flips to a white screen, and bleeds... almost literally.

Below is XF86Config, and test.log.

Thanks for any help,
Khristofer MacGown

# **
# Refer to the XF86Config(4/5) man page for details about the format of
# this file.
# **

# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the Linux framebuffer console.
# This generic interface should work with nearly all video cards (although
# not every card will support every resolution). To use the Linux framebuffer
# console, you need to enable these kernel options:
# Using 'make menuconfig', in 'console drivers', enable:
# [*] VGA text console
# [*] Video mode selection support
# [*] Support for frame buffer devices (EXPERIMENTAL)
# [*] VESA VGA graphics console
# [*] Advanced low level driver options
# <*> 8 bpp packed pixels support
# <*> 16 bpp packed pixels support
# <*> 24 bpp packed pixels support
# <*> 32 bpp packed pixels support
# <*> VGA characters/attributes support
# [*] Select compiled-in fonts
# [*] VGA 8x8 font
# [*] VGA 8x16 font
# If you have a Matrox or ATI Mach64, you might try enabling the options having
# to do with those cards as well. However, if the card is VESA compliant, you
# don't really need to (and it might cause problems, possibly)
#
# Next, if this file is not already named /etc/X11/XF86Config, make a copy
# with that name. This file ships with the name XF86Config-fbdev to avoid
# overwriting an existing config file.
#
# To get the kernel to start in VESA framebuffer mode, you need to pass it
# a vga= init string at boot time. For example, if you use LILO you'll
# probably find a vga=normal string in your /etc/lilo.conf. If you edit that
# to one of the values in this table:
#
# Colours 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
# +-
# 256 | 769 771 773 775 796
# 32,768 | 784 787 790 793 797
# 65,536 | 785 788 791 794 798
# 16.8M | 786 789 792 795 799
#
# ...such as this for 1024x768x64k:
# vga = 791
# and then reinstall LILO by running 'lilo' as root, then at the next boot
# Linux should start in a VESA framebuffer console mode.
#
# For more information on how to activate the Linux frame buffer, see
# /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt.

2002-02-14 Thread Manoj P. Samanta

Hello,

I am trying to install linux on a IBM thinkpad laptop (A30p, 2653),
but unable to get the X-window running. Initially I was getting
a incomprehensible screen full of rasters, but then when I tried
this configuration file last night, it worked fine. It could even
detect my USB mouse. Today morning, when I try again without any
change, I am again back to the same old noisy screen. When I change
the driver to 'vesa' I get usable (but very inferior quality)
Xwindows. From what I am reading in different newsgroups and
other sources, these types of laptops have ATI L6 MY graphics
chip.

I have given up after no real change made the system from functioning
to non-functioning. I am attaching both my XF86Config-4
and /var/log/XFree86.0.log files.

I would appreciate any kind of help !!!

Thanks,
Manoj

P.S. The machine is dual-boot between linux and winXP. The Windows
side is working fine.

to OT: don't start messing around with ATI if u r not sure bout support, too much
trouble with ATI here. Wanna buy my Voodoo 3 2000 AGP? Works like a charm ;)
I'd even trade it for the ATI given i has TV out so can put it in my Win-VCR box :)
Besides, get rid of AOL, no offense.

to Ted: well my secondary machine is a K6-2/350@400 and consider this thing old... am
currently setting up a relict from the past as router/firewall (P166)... this is
*real* old

Not quite with P&P the PC and X recognize what they have. A reasonable thing to do

When you reposted this you lost the subject line, which was the only
place you gave your equipment configuration, "ATI Rage Mobility M1 on
Dell Inspiron 3800".

That's a laptop with a flat panel display, isn't it? I didn't respond
earlier because I have no experience with flat panel displays, and I
didn't find anything in a quick look at http://www.xfree86.org/.

You say you "tried several times", but you don't say what you tried.
Did you try "XFree86 -configure"? You did install it with Xinstall.sh,
didn't you? Why did you choose 4.1.0 rather than 4.2.0?

Anybody else out there: Is there some good general information resource
on configuring XFree86 for a flat panel as opposed to a vacuum tube
display?

I installed Solaris 8 Intel edition and XFree86 4.1.0, but I don't know how to
configure my system. What chipset should I choose, and what type of monitor?? I tried
several times, for example "ATI Mach64" and "High Frequency Super VGA at 1024*768 70
Hz", but after running "startx", all I got is a black screen.
Can anyone tell me the correct way of configuration and analyze my problem??
Thanks in advance.

For each user, edit $HOME/.xinitrc (if you use startx) or .xsession (if
you use xdm). I'm not aware of a way to do it system-wide for all
users, but man xinit (or xdm), maybe they look at a system-wide defaults
file.

2002-01-21 Thread joel . collet

Hi,

I'am currently using an SiS6326 card with 8Mb mem and TV out. I want to
obtain a reliable 50 HZ mode in 800x600 or in 640x480 to be able to use
my TV output. Unfortuneatly the X server doesn't accept a dot clock
below 16.25 Mhz in the modeline definition whereas the requirements for
TV is about 14.76 Mhz! Is there a way to force or to set this minimum
picxel clock value (the logs of Xfree said it's a default setting, so
it must be possible to set it!! And it's not an impossibility for the
card, since it's working under windows). Currently, with a modeline at
16.25 MHz i'm only able to see "garble" on to my TV (as well as on the
screen of the computer)!
It would be really nice since it's very cool to watch DVD's and all
other stuff played by my computer on to my TV!!

Sorry if it's not to you i must send my question!

for a newbie, I'd actually recommend just going out and buying the $40 boxed
set of RedHat 7.2. comes with a decent manual; has all the CDs you need, no
hassling with downloading/burning ISOs.

alternatively, see if there's a local Linux Users Group. they'll help you
get it installed... there may be an 'Installfest' sometime soon; where
anyone can bring their computer and get linux installed on it.

if anyone is in the Minnesota area, the Twin Cities Linux Users Group is
having an Installfest on Feb 6th. www.mn-linux.org has more info.

Download directly from RedHat. That's the best idea.

new guy here,

Several years ago I purchased Linux. It the 1998 version of RedHat.
I have never really sat down and bothered to learn it. So I uninstalled it
and
continued running windows.

Now I have the spare time and spare equipment to learn and play with.
I am having a terrible time getting Xfree86 to operate. The Xconfig doesn't
have
my video listed. the SuperProbe does nothing of value. My NIC was not
listed.
I am at a loss as to what to do. I am to the point I will just uninstall
and own a big paper weight.
