 audio.driver devi mettere alsa09.
 Comunque poi dovresti modificare le altri opzioni che si riferiscono a oss;

Sigh!
con alsa09 non funziona!
se do auto viene convertito in null e và,

last ti dice chi ha fatto login

Ciao a tutti.
calcolo agli elementi finiti.
Io seguo le istruzioni e do un comando ./config con una serie di parametri;

 VERY IMPORTANT
Add to your default path the directory : /home/bepi/ofeli/bin
or copy the contents of this directory to a directory in your

Otherwise the installation of contributions and utilities will

Hi Leonardo - I had problems getting an Adaptec SCSI card to work with a

Shuttle motherboard here, and although I finally gave up and moved the
SCSI
setup to another motherboard, I was told that during installation, you
must
pick expert and try to get the install to pick another SCSI driver.
Apparently, mine was always picking the wrong one during installation
and the
install would always fail.

Do a search on the mailing list archives for SCSI and you should find
the
threads about it.

Hope this helps. :-)

[newbie] CD-R Information

2003-03-19 Per discussione Peter Watson
There was a recent thread which talked about identifying the manufacturer
of CD-R'S using ATIP information. I have since come across the following,
I've no idea how true it is but it makes interesting reading.

==
Charles Palmer, from cd-recordable.com, had this to say about the
manufacturer identification:

Two components that many users of these programs always take as gospel are
Media Manufacturer and Dye Data. These two readings are next to worthless.

The reason for this is that many CD-R manufacturers (like CD-
Recordable.com) purchase their stampers (the nickel die that all CD-R
substrates are molded from) from 3rd party sources. These 3rd party
sources (either other disc manufacturers, or mastering houses) encode the
data that these 'Identification' programs read, at the time that the
original glass master is encoded. The 'Manufacturer' information that is
encoded is usually the name of the company that made the master. Since
stampers made from that master will be sold to disc manufacturers the
world over, all of discs that those manufacturers produce from those
stampers will contain the same 'Manufacturer' information. Information
which is obviously quite erroneous and irrelevant. Very seldom will the
'manufacturer' information encoded on a CD-R actually tell you anything
other than who made the original master. [...]

The second piece of data (the dye type) is also dubious. Because most
master/stamper configurations are designed to be matched to specific dye
types (Phthalocyanine, Cyanine, Azo, Etc), the 'Dye' information that is
encoded when the master is produced indicates the type of dye that the
master was designed for. This of course, does not assure that the
manufacturer that buys and uses this stamper will be using it with the dye
that it has been designed for. It is quite possible that a stamper/dye
combination is used by a CD-R manufacturer that contradicts the 'dye'
information encoded on the master. Therefore that information becomes as
potentially misleading as the 'Manufacturer' data discussed earlier.
The only reliable piece of information in the ATIP region is the disc
length.

[newbie] duplicating hard disk

2003-03-19 Per discussione Christopher Joseph
First apologies. I have had some problems getting the search function on
the mail archives to function properly this morning so I have not been
able to trawl for past questions regarding the same topic properly.

The problem:

I have bought a new 80 Gb ATA133 Hard disk for my desktop running
mandrake linux. I would like to migrate some of the partions on the
existing disk to the new disk and then 'grow' the remaining partitions
to fill the original disk.

I tried moving /home, /usr and /var on to the new disk by simply using
SU on konqueror and simply copying the files accross. I them altered
/etc/fstab to mount the new partitions at reboot.

BUT - the copy process changed a lot of permissions and all kinds of
things have errored

Like:

opening emacs I couldn't save back to my emacs preferences because the
.emacs... file had been chmodded as part of the copy process.

or

any number of services failed to shutdown or start despite there being
no failures in the copy process. Again probably down to permissions.

The Question:

How should I migrate partions (/var, /usr, /home) onto the new disk and
grow the remaining ones (/, SWAP).

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] dns queries

2003-03-19 Per discussione Adolfo Bello
Hi there:

I am having some troubles trying to check my clients zone dns settings.
I can use host, dig or nslookup to check for any type of record. No
problem here, as long as I know the name of the record I want to check.

However, I've been unable to check an entire zone. Let's say that I want
to list all the records of the domain anydomain.com which is served by
the name server dns.anydomain.com (or x.y.z.t)

In Windows, if I start nslookup, set the server to dns.anydomain.com (or
x.y.z.t) and enter ls -a anydomain.com I would get the entire list of
dns records for that domain. However, Mandrake's nslookup says that the
ls command is not implemented, even when it appears nicely explained in
man nslookup.

Maybe host or dig can help, but I haven't found the way to do it after
reading their man pages near a zillion times. Of course, there is the
possibility that I haven't understood them a zillion times or have
skipped the important part a zillion times.

Is there any command that I can use to get entire list of records for a
zone?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Change to the old hd

  cd /OLD

use tar to archive the old partionion im memory and untar it on the new

with keeping all the flags:

  tar -cSp --numeric-owner -f - . | ( cd /NEW tar xSpvf - )

Write the boot manager to the new hd.
That's all.

3.3v is at? Hopefully it's 3.3+ (3.4 or 3.5). Who makes the PSU?

As to temperature - I took the case off, had gkrellm going,
showing 114.4 degrees (F. not Celsius). I opened a shell and ran
 burnK6, and watched it.

System locked up in less than 2 minutes, final temperature was
118.2 degrees at lockup. That should not really be the problem,
 should it?

The only reason I refer to Celsius for computer temps is 'cause
that's the prevailing convention. 114f = 46c, 118f = 48c, so heat is
not the problem. Next likely culprits are L2 cache (on the cpu) and
ram. Not neccesarily hardware failure, could be configuration.

Are you running the cpu at default speed, and what's the FSB mhz?
More likely the problem is that PNY ram. Make sure you're runnin it
at bios defaults, which should be cas 3, and bank interleaving
disabled. Disable the 'auto' or 'get specs from ram' (SMP) bios
setting. The ram might be overstating it's specs. Brands like PNY and
other low end vendors, including house brands and generics, often do.

If you can, try different (better ;) ram. Try moving the sticks to
different slots (even if you only have one stick), and swapping the
order around. Clean the ram's contacts with a pencil eraser. For
the L2 cache, and this could help the ram too, try running the system
with the FSB underclocked. EG, if your FSB is 133mhz, drop it to
130mhz. If that still doesn't fix or improve the problem, then add
some Vcore (cpu voltage). IIRC, your XP has a range of 1.55 to 1.75.
Try it at 1.7 and even 1.75, the upper limit.

Did you try mprime ? It'll stop on hardware errors, usually ram.
See what you can find out about that PNY ram. You system should have
a minimum of 7.5ns, cas2.5 ram. = 7ns, cas2 would be better. The
PNY probly doesn't meet those minimum specs, even if it says it does.
Ignore DDR333 and such, those are just general marketing labels.

[newbie] 56k modem

I've reinstalled mandrake 9, and now the modem works;
however, the symptom (being able to surf for awhile,

I also bought and tested another modem, and the

OK, I did some Google'in. Nothin very concrete, but most of what I
found said the atip info is accurate with possible exceptions. Either
purposely false info, or incapable burners (usual fix was to upgrade
the drives firmware). A few sites were aware of the of the article
Peter posted and here's the general answer to it:

There is this one article on the interenet where this expert
claims that ATIP information is unrealiable. However, this expert
happens to be a bulk CD-R retailer and it is not his interest if
people start snooping around for the manufacturer info.

OTOH, I found one that seemed to somewhat agree:

In the real world, the blank dies used to press CD recording media
may have bad information on the manufacturer and dye system .. so use
that info at your own risk.

That came from a CD-RW drive manufacturers site, Yamaha. It could
be construed as the 'purposely false atip' warning I found on many
sites. But, those warnings most often said the recording time and/or
speed was overstated. Something I've long suspected.

There was one general consensus tho. There's only a few CDr
manufacturers, but those are sold under 100's of brand names.

Charles Palmer, from cd-recordable.com, had this to say about the
  manufacturer identification:

Two components that many users of these programs always take as
gospel are Media Manufacturer and Dye Data. These two readings are
  next to worthless.

The reason for this is that many CD-R manufacturers (like CD-
Recordable.com) purchase their stampers (the nickel die that all
CD-R substrates are molded from) from 3rd party sources. These 3rd
party sources (either other disc manufacturers, or mastering
houses) encode the data that these 'Identification' programs read,
at the time that the original glass master is encoded. The
'Manufacturer' information that is encoded is usually the name of
the company that made the master. Since stampers made from that
master will be sold to disc manufacturers the world over, all of
discs that those manufacturers produce from those stampers will
contain the same 'Manufacturer' information. Information which is
obviously quite erroneous and irrelevant. Very seldom will the
'manufacturer' information encoded on a CD-R actually tell you
anything other than who made the original master. [...]

The second piece of data (the dye type) is also dubious. Because
most master/stamper configurations are designed to be matched to
specific dye types (Phthalocyanine, Cyanine, Azo, Etc), the 'Dye'
information that is encoded when the master is produced indicates
the type of dye that the master was designed for. This of course,
does not assure that the manufacturer that buys and uses this
stamper will be using it with the dye that it has been designed
for. It is quite possible that a stamper/dye combination is used by
a CD-R manufacturer that contradicts the 'dye' information encoded
on the master. Therefore that information becomes as potentially
misleading as the 'Manufacturer' data discussed earlier. The only
reliable piece of information in the ATIP region is the disc
  length.

I also tried it without de isosize flag, but it didn't work either.

I must be honest, it worked one time. But that's it.

Re: [newbie] RE: Difference between 'ISO images' and ' Linux 9.0 for i586'

2003-03-19 Per discussione David E. Fox
I'm about to install Mandrake Linux on my laptop and like to know the difference
between those two. I guess I need to download ISO images 3 CDs where first one is
bootable but what is the 'Mandrake Linux 9.0 for i586 and higher' download for. Do I
 need anything from there?

Well, yes. i586 is simply an indication that Mandrake is designed for
Pentiums and better CPUs. 486s may have a problem.

You really want all three disks, since the RPMs are pretty much
scattered across all three. I was under the impression that CD#1 was
basically the base installation, with CD#2 and CD#3 optional, but I
found that the labels are a bit misleading. CD#3 for nistance is
labeled 'internationalization' which seems to suggest that it is not
needed unless you live outside the US where language support (other
than US English) is needed but there are other packages on that CD
that are important nevertheless.

Re: [newbie] Kenel panic : No init found

Kenel panic : No init found
Try passing init = option to kernel
after which nothing happens except that the caps lock and scroll lock keep
 flashing.

That's kindo of like booting up DOS without command.com, but not
exactly, and probably worse. init is always the first process to start
and all other processes descend from it. Not being able to find an
init is not a very good thing.

What probably happened is that the partition you boot from is somehow
damaged - or maybe you are trying to boot from the wrong partition.

Any suggestions as to how to get the machine to boot will be gratefully
received - or should I just wait to upgrade to 9.1 - which, I assume, will
 fix the problem.

upgrading might fix the problem but this should be fixable with a
rescue disk or something. You can try booting from the lilo command
line (the boot: prompt) and add something like:

boot: linux single init=/bin/sh

(I think I have that right) - it would bring up the box in single user
mode with just a shell prompt, letting you do some basic admin
commands to fix whatever is wrong.)

Re: [newbie] FTP Mandrake 9.0

2003-03-19 Per discussione David E. Fox
before they can log on to only there folders/files
and not be able to see other users folders/files

The approach I'd take on something like this would be to use what is
called a chroot jail coupled with ssh/scp for access since that's
far safer than simple ftp. That way they can operate in their
environment with a regular shell, but the chroot will keep them from
going into other directories besised their own.

chroot effectively puts the new root == their own home directory and
they shouldn't be able to go up in the tree to traverse to other
files or directories.

Just give them regular home directories using those restrictions.
