trascendentale

io l'ho letto, e per ME era abbastanza.trascendente

questo è (secondo me!

[newbie-it] problemi scheda audio integrata

PCI Audio Accelerator utilizzante driver ALSA snd-intel8x0...ora, tutto bene,
me li lascia nemmeno aprire!

in..linuxese!!

Ti risulta
che qualla ML funzioni?!

They really suck - just like their USB cameras...but in the meanwhile,
you might want to check the modem to see what it REALLY is; the RITMO

Opening a terminal program and typing:

WHACK

In the case of slapping hard drives into your machine and then copying
data to them, it's best to get to know HDPARM quite well, and how to
tweak drive settings with it.

After slapping the drive in your boxen and getting linux up and running
and recognising the drive, you're going to want to force some params on
it in order to get some better throughput - much better than what you
experienced today.

I honestly suggest reading very carefully through the HDPARM man pages,
but then again, I know about RTFM and how often we choose not to do
that...

So, with that said, here are some settings that I've found work about
right for every drive I slap into a system here (for basically the same
thing):

hdparm -X69 -d1 -u1 -c3 -m16 -A1 -W1 /dev/hdX

(where X is the letter of the device)

Generally, we kill them dead, then skin them, then we stick a big steel bar
up its ass till it comes out the neck.. then we put it on a machine that
spins it round and around over a hot fire..

occasionally we eat them afterwards..

Also we make and export alot of socks. :-)

Why?? what do you do with sheep in your neck of the woods??

 Mandrake installation).

I am able to see both the ATAPI CD-ROM Hard Disk in the BIOS.
Has anyone faced this problem before? Any help will be appreciated.

Can you try setting the CD drive up as master on the second IDE channel. I
have set up at least 50 machines that way and never had the problems that you
describe. If all you are using is 1 CD drive and 1 HDD things should run
faster using 1 drive on each IDE channel. Make sure both drives are set as
master. Make sure that any drive set as master is at the end of the IDE
cable. If you still have problems try the eject button every couple of
seconds after starting the machine.

[newbie] Mail setup

2003-08-10 Per discussione Michael Lothian
Hi

I'm not sure this is the best place for this question but here goes...

I'm getting a 2MBit broadband conection and I'd like to set a linux box
to be my own mail server.

What's the best way to do this:

My ideal setup would be imap, pop and webmail and an ftp and web server
as well perhaps. Oh yes and spam assasin is an essential.

Is there any setup guides for this or does Mandrake have any wizards?

Oh yes my current domain is fireburn.co.uk and my new conection will
have a fixed ip.

Again I'm not sure about all this as I've only really used mandrake for
playing music and watching dvds.

Thanks again

Mike

Good thing this list is for newbies because here is a real newbie
question: how do I put a 2nd Linux installation on my hard drive? (such
as mandrake 9.2 beta.) I could go into more detail but as to what I've
tried, but best I should not waste any more of your time.
Thank you for your assistance.

There's got to be soemthing ... and btw, how do I reset to what it was

that's weird: it starts copying with 9Mb per sec .. but quickly drops to
3,2,1 Mb/sec (quickly as in in 30 seconds).

Well, something is definitely up with that - do you have both HD's on
the same cable? Does your motherboard support ATA133/ATA100?

Thanks to all that offered advice on this. I solved all my problems and
for a few bucks ebayd a MOBO for my homeless CPU and a CPU for my brainless
MOBO along with a few sticks of memory. I guess I will just end up with 1
extra machine built from my piles of used parts.
But I should be able to find homes for them. This is starting to get a bit
interisting. I live near a small town , population around 500 with other
small towns around it, the kind of place where everybody knows what all is
going on around town and in the surrounding area and I seem to be 1 of the
only people around that can build or repair a computer for 20 miles around.
It's kind of a part time job or hobby at this point. People around town are
are starting to talk about their ML boxes and people are starting to ask me
about ML. I build at least 1 computer a month sometimes a lot more that is a
linux machine for someone around here. Thats not a lot until you figure in
the small total population. Another year or 2 and Norfork Arkansas and the
surrounding area may have the highest percentage of Mandrake linux users in
the US. The effect seems to be snowballing and I am enjoying seeing Microsoft
getting their butts kicked on a local level. LOL

Thanks All
